Seismic analysis of bridges based on stress-dependent damping

  • Damping value has considerable influence on the dynamic and seismic behaviors of bridges. However, currently the constant damping ratios that are prescribed by most bridge seismic design codes can't truly represent the complicated damping character of actual structures. In this paper, a cyclic loading experiment was conducted to study the effect of stress amplitude on material damping of concrete to present an analyzing model of the material damping of concrete. Furthermore, based on the fundamental damping of structure measured under ambient vibration, combined with the presented stress-dependent material damping concrete, the seismic response of a bridge pier was calculated. Comparison between the calculated and experiment results verified the validity of the presented damping model. Finally, a modified design and analysis method for bridge was proposed based on stress-dependent damping theory, and a continuous rigid frame bridge was selected as the example to calculate the actual damping values and the dynamic response of the bridge under different earthquake intensities. The calculation results indicated that using the constant damping given by the Chinese seismic design code of bridges would overestimate the energy dissipation capacity of the bridge.

  • In the cases of high speed railway bridge, dynamic behavior analysis is important because of high passing velocity and moving load at the regular intervals, and the damping ratio is a major element in dynamic behavior analysis. In this paper, damping ratios were estimated by two methods and vibration type sections, and relationship between estimated damping ratio and representative value of bridge vibration. At the results, estimated damping ratio using all time of vibration were more stable then using only free vibration section. And in the case of using extended Kalman filter, estimated damping ratio were trend of growth by growth of representative value of bridge vibration. At last, it was shown that study about reliabilities of estimated damping ratios were need.

확장형 칼만필터를 이용한 현수교의 감쇠성능 평가 (Evaluation of Damping Properties on Suspension Bridge Using Extended Kalman Filter)

  • 감쇠비는 현수교에 있어서 교량진동을 평가하기 위한 중요한 동적 요소 중 하나이다. 하지만, 실재 현수교에서 계측된 상시 진동신호로부터 감쇠비를 직접적으로 추정하는 것은 현실적으로 매우 어려운 일이다. 뿐만 아니라, 한정된 계측자료를 이용하여 추정된 감쇠비로부터 공기역학적 감쇠와 마찰 감쇠를 구분하는 것은 더욱 어렵다. Macdonald는 2005년 발표한 자료에서 공기역학적 감쇠성능은 풍속에 따라 선형적으로 증가한다고 하였으며, Park등은 감쇠성능은 진동의 크기에 따라 변화할 수 있다고 하였다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 이러한 감쇠비, 풍속, 진동의 크기 사이의 관계를 연구하여, 추정 감쇠비로부터 공기역학적 감쇠와 마찰 감쇠를 구분하고자 하였다. 본 논문에서 감쇠비 추정대상으로는 전라남도 고흥에 위치한 소록대교를 선택하였으며, 감쇠비 추정에는 Hilbert 변환법을 이용한 방법과 확장형 칼만필터를 이용하였다. 또한 두 방법으로 추정된 감쇠비들을 상호 비교를 실시하였다. 그 결과, 상시진동 자료와 차량재하실험으로부터 얻어진 자료를 이용하여 추정된 감쇠비와 풍속, 그리고 가속도의 크기를 이용하여 추정 감쇠비로부터 공기역학적 감쇠 성능과 마찰 감쇠 성능의 구분이 가능하다는 것을 알 수 있었다.

  • 철도교량 동적 설계 및 동적 안전성을 해석적으로 평가하기 위해서는 교량의 감쇠비를 산정하는 것이 매우 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 국내 고속 및 일반철도에서 일반적으로 사용되고 있는 소수주형강합성교, PSC Box, Steel Box, PSC, IPC, Precom, Preflex에 대하여 실내 모형실험 및 운행 중 현장계측을 하였다. 이러한 고속 및 일반철도의 대표적 교량형식에 대한 실내외 시험을 통해 대수감소율을 적용하여 감쇠비를 분석하였다. 따라서 철도교량의 감쇠비는 하중크기, 가진주파수, 진폭에 영향을 받지 않는 것으로 분석되었다. 또한, 기존 철도설계기준에 제시된 감쇠비 하한치와 비교하여 PSC구조 및 강합성구조 철도교량의 경우 감쇠비 하한값을 1.0%로 적용하는 것이 합리적이라 판단되었다.

  • Recently, due to the advanced measurement techniques, long-term health monitoring systems have been frequently applied to existing bridges. It is known that damping ratios as one of dynamic properties would be an important parameter for evaluating the bridge condition. However, damping ratios may be normally varied depending on the external loading effects on bridges. In general, both the logarithmic decrement and the half-power band width method as a conventional method can be simply used for evaluating the damping ratios accurately when bridge response signals are measured under free vibration conditions. In this study, the Hilbert-Huang transform and the extended Kalman filter were applied to evaluate the damping ratio by using the bridge acceleration signals measured under ambient vibration condition. From the results under ambient vibration condition of bridges, it was examined that the damping ratios evaluated from both the Hilbert-Huang transform and the extended Kalman filter could be more reliable than those from conventional methods.

Particle filter approach for extracting the non-linear aerodynamic damping of a cable-stayed bridge subjected to crosswind action

  • The aerodynamic damping is an essential factor that can considerably affect the dynamic response of the cable-stayed bridge induced by crosswind load. However, developing an accurate and efficient aerodynamic damping model is crucial for evaluating the crosswind load-induced response on cable-stayed bridges. Therefore, this study proposes a new method for identifying aerodynamic damping of the bridge structures under crosswind load using an extended Kalman filter (EKF) and the particle filter (PF) algorithm. The EKF algorithm is introduced to capture the aerodynamic damping ratio. PF technique is used to select the optimal spectral representation of the noise. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed solution were investigated through full-scale vibration measurement data of the crosswind-induced on the bridge's girder. The results show that the proposed solution can generate an efficient and robust estimation. The errors between the target and extracted values are around 0.01mm and 0.003^o, respectively, for the vertical and torsional motion. The relationship between the amplitude and the aerodynamic damping ratio is linear for small reduced wind velocity and nonlinear with the increasing value of the reduced wind velocity. Finally, the results show the influence of the level of noise.

  • In high speed railway bridges, dynamic analysis is important because of high passing velocity and moving load at the regular intervals, and damping ratio is a major parameter to predict dynamic responses. In this paper, damping ratios were estimated by using half power band width method and extended Kalman filter according to acceleration signal conditions, and a relationship between estimated damping ratios and representative values of bridge vibration was derived. From the results, damping ratios estimated from total ambient vibration were more reliable than only free vibration part. In case of using extended Kalman filter, the estimated damping ratios varying with RMQ(root mean quad), as one of representative values of bridge vibration, have more feasible trend. Thus, it is shown that further studies on reliabilities of estimated damping ratios are needed.

Effects of local structural damage in a steel truss bridge on internal dynamic coupling and modal damping

  • Structural health monitoring of steel truss bridge based on changes in modal properties was investigated in this study. Vibration measurements with five sensors were conducted at an existing Warren truss bridge with partial fractures in diagonal members before and after an emergency repair work. Modal properties identified by the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm showed evidences of increases in modal damping due to the damage in diagonal member. In order to understand the dynamic behavior of the bridge and possible mechanism of those increases in modal damping, theoretical modal analysis was conducted with three dimensional frame models. It was found that vibrations of the main truss could be coupled internally with local vibrations of diagonal members and the degree of coupling could change with structural changes in diagonal members. Additional vibration measurements with fifteen sensors were then conducted so as to understand the consistency of those theoretical findings with the actual dynamic behavior. Modal properties experimentally identified showed that the damping change caused by the damage in diagonal member described above could have occurred in a diagonal-coupled mode. The results in this study imply that damages in diagonal members could be detected from changes in modal damping of diagonal-coupled modes.

  • The Fe-Mn damping Alloys which combine a high damping capacity with good mechanical properties can provide attractive technical and economic solutions to problems involving fatigue, noise and vibration. This study is aimed at finding its applicability to divided spherical bearing in bridge. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1) The specific damping capacity of the Fe-Mn damping alloy is superior to that of SM490B. 2) The divided spherical bearing manufactured Fe-Mn damping alloy passes the load test to confirm applicability of that in bridge.

MR damping system for mitigating wind-rain induced vibration on Dongting Lake Cable-Stayed Bridge

  • The Dongting Lake Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge crossing the Dongting Lake where it meets the Yangtze River in southern central China. Several intensive wind-rain induced vibrations had been observed since its open to traffic in 1999. To investigate the possibility of using MR damping systems to reduce cable vibration, a series of field tests were conducted. Based on the promising research results, MR damping system was installed on the longest 156 stay cables of Dongting Lake Bridge in June 2002, making it the worlds first application of MR dampers on cable-stayed bridge to suppress the wind-rain induced cable vibration. As a visible and permanent aspect of the bridge, the MR damping system must be aesthetically pleasing, reliable, durable, easy to maintain, as well as effective in vibration mitigation. Substantial work was done to meet these requirements. This paper describes field tests and the implementation of MR damping systems for cable vibration reduction. Three-years reliable service of this system proves its durability.
