  • This paper presents the results of the load test performed on a steel plate girder bridge and suggests the procedure of bridge rating through the load test. In general the girder bridge resist the loads as a complex three-dimensional structural system. Therefore the test results are analyzed for the longitudinal and the transverse response characteristics. The bending moments based on the beam analysis are compared with the measured values for longitudinal response characteristics. The lateral load distribution characteristics are assessed based on the load test results for transverse response characteristics. Also the rating of the test bridge is performed by using the suggested rating procedure which considers the actual response characteristics of the bridge. The suggested procedure can be used for understanding of actual response characteristics and evaluating load carrying capacity of the steel plate girder bridge.

  • A thorough administration of the arterial road network requires a continuous supply of updated and accurate information about the traffic that travels on the roads. One of the ways to effectively obtain the traffic volume and weight distribution of heavy vehicles is the BWIM technique, which is actively being studied. Unlike previous studies, this study was performed to develop a simplified Bridge Weigh-In-Motion (BWIM) algorithm that can easily estimate the axle spacing and weight of a traveling vehicle by utilizing the structural characteristics of the bridge. A short span RC T-beam bridge with no crossbeam installed was selected for the study, and then the strain response characteristics of bridge deck and girder was checked through preliminary field test. Based on the preliminary field test results, a simplified BWIM algorithm suitable for the bridge to be studied was derived. The validity and accuracy of the BWIM algorithm derived in this study were verified through field test. As a result of the verification test, the proposed BWIM algorithm can estimate the axle spacing and gross weight of the travelling vehicles with the average percent error of less than 3%.

  • Recently, U-section decks have been more and more used in metro and light rail bridges as an innovative concept in bridge deck design and a successful alternative to conventional box girders because of their potential advantages. U-section may be viewed as a single vent box girder eliminating the top slab connecting the webs, with the moving vehicles travelling on the lower deck. U-section bridges thus solve many problems like limited vertical clearance underneath the bridge lowest point, besides providing built-in noise barriers. Beam theory in mechanics assumes that plane section remains plane after bending, but it was found that shearing forces produce shear deformations and the plane section does not remain plane. This phenomenon leads to distortion of the cross section. For a box or a U section, this distortion makes the central part of the slab lagging behind those parts closer to the webs and this is known as shear lag effect. A sample real-world double-track U-section metro bridge is modelled in this paper using a commercial finite element analysis program and is analysed under various loading conditions and for different geometric variations. The three-dimensional finite element analysis is used to demonstrate variations in the transverse bending moments in the deck as well as variations in the longitudinal normal stresses induced in the cross section along the U-girder's span thus capturing warping and shear lag effects which are then compared to the stresses calculated using conventional beam theory. This comparison is performed not only to locate the distortion, warping and shear lag effects typically induced in U-section bridges but also to assess the main parameters influencing them the most.

  • A post-tensioned slab bridge is analyzed by the specially orthotropic laminates theory. Both the geometry and the material of the cross section of the slab are considered symmetrical with respect to the mid-surface so that the bending extension coupling stiffness, $B_{ij}=0$, and $D_{16}=D_{26}=0$. Each longitudinal and transverse steel layer is regarded as a lamina, and material constants of each lamina is calculated by the use of rule of mixture. This bridge with simple support is under uniformly distributed vertical and axial loads. In this paper, the finite difference method and the beam theory are used for analysis. The result of beam analysis is modified to obtain the solution of the plate analysis. The result of this paper can be used for post-tensioned slab bridge analysis by the engineers with undergraduate study in near future.

  • The paper describes an optimization method based on the mathematical model of interaction within multibody 'bridge-track-cars" dynamic system. The interaction is connected with considerable dynamic phenomena influenced by high traffic speed (up to 400 km/h) on high-speed railroads. The trend analysis of a structure is necessary to determine the direction and resource of optimizing the system. Thus, scientific methods of decision-making process are necessary. The process requires a great amount of information analysis dealing with behavior and changes of the "bridge-track-cars system" that consists of mechanisms and structures, including transitions. The paper shows the algorithm of multi-criteria optimization that can essentially reduce weight of a bridge superstructure using big data analysis. This reduction is carried out in accordance with the constraints that have to be satisfied in any case. Optimization of real steel-concrete beam is exemplified. It demonstrates possibility of measures that are offered by the algorithm.

  • Design live load and girder distribution factors play an important role in the current design procedures. The fraction of vehicle load effect transferred to a single member may be selected in accordance with current KBDC. However, the specified values, both design load and distribution factors involve considerable inaccuracies, These inaccuracies relate to the uncertainties of the structural analysis, especially any bias and scatter which drives from the use of simplified load distribution factors. In this study , based on several field measurement and finite element analysis, live load distribution effects of current KBDC are evaluated. The final values of the bias and coefficient of variation of "g"according to bridge type are determined. The bridge types are reinforced concrete slab, prestressed concrete girder and steel l-beam.el l-beam.

  • Superstructure of reinforced concrete bridges are shortened or elongated due to creep, drying shrinkage, temperature and so on. Most of bridge superstructures are free to shortening and elongation without constraint and stresses will not be induced by creep, drying shrinkage and temperature. But if bridge superstructure are constraint due to wrong setting and functional defects of bridge bearing, very large constraint forces can be induced. In this study, PSCI-Beam by tilt-constructed with constraint and deviation of bearings are presented and the effects of time-dependent constraint stress and temperature loads are investigated.

  • Many of the bridge and building floor systems, including the girders and cross-beams, also behave a similar special orthotropic plates. Such plates are subject to the concentrate masses in the form of traffic loads, or the test equipments such as the accelerator in addition to their own masses. Analysis of such problems is usually very difficult. Most of the bridge slabs on girders have large aspect ratios. Finite difference method is used for this purpose, in this paper. The result is compared with that of the beam theory.

  • This study focuses on seismic behaviour of tall piers characterized by high slender ratio. Two analysis models were developed based on elastic-plastic hinged beam element and elastic-plastic fiber beam element, respectively. The effect of the division density of elastic-plastic hinged beam element on seismic demand was discussed firstly to seek a rational analysis model for tall piers. Then structural seismic behaviour such as the formation of plastic hinges, the development of plastic zone, and the displacement at the top of the tall piers were investigated through incremental dynamic analysis. It showed that the seismic behaviour of a tall pier was quite different from that of a lower pier due to higher modes contributions. In a tall pier, an additional plastic zone may occur at the middle height of the pier with the increase of seismic excitation. Moreover, the maximum curvature reaction at the bottom section and maximum lateral displacement at the top turned out to be seriously out of phase for a tall pier due to the higher modes effect, and thus pushover analysis can not appropriately predict the local displacement capacity.

  • The field around additional cutout of the floor beam web in orthotropic bridge deck was subjected to high stress concentration, especially the weld toe between floor beam and U shaped rib and the free edge of the additional cutout. Based on different considerations, different geometrical parameters of additional cutout were proposed in European, American and Japanese specifications, and there remained remarkable differences among them. In this study, considering influence of out-of-plane deformation of floor beam web and U shaped rib, parameter analysis for additional cutout under typical load cases was performed by fine finite element method. The influence of additional cutout shape and height to the stress distribution around the additional cutout were investigated and analyzed. Meanwhile, the static and fatigue test on this structure details was carried out. The stress distribution was consistent with the finite element analysis results. The fatigue property for additional cutout height of 95mm was slightly better than that of 61.5 mm.
