One hundred isolates of Magnaporthe grisea from Korea and China were characterized for pathogenicity using eight Korean differential varieties(KDV), six Chinese differential varieties(CDV) and six near isogenic lines(NILs) developed in China. The restriction length polymorphism of M. grisea isolates from each country also was analyzed using MGR586 as a probe. One hundred Korean isolates classified into 17 races on KDV were grouped into 29 pathotypes on Chinese near isogenic lines(NILs). Virulence of 46% of Korean isolates against all the six Chinese NILs indicated that the current six Chinese NILs alone was not enough to be used as differential varieties in Korea. Especially, susceptibility of the BL1 carrying resistance gene Pi-b to 70% of tested Korean isolates suggested that BL1(Pi-b) may not be a useful resistance source to Korean blast. Based on the virulence assays of M. grisea populations from each country were divided into two groups. About 50% of Chinese isolates showed similarity to the 30% of the Korean isolates. Especially, the isolates from northern part of China, where Japonica rice cultivars were grown, showed high similarity to the Korean isolates, while isolates from southern part of China, where Indica rice were mainly grown, showed low similarity to Korean isolates. The genome RFLPs of Korean isolates were quite different from those of southern part of China using MGR586 as a probe. These data indicated that the physiological and genetical characteristics of M. grisea population might be determined by strong interaction with cultivated rice.
Oil contamination soil has been one of the most environmental social issues for decades in the inside and outside of country. The law of soil environmental preservation was carried out in the 1990s and the government controlled not only soil environment management and the remediation of contaminated soil but also promoted the development of remedial technology and cleanup business of contaminated soil by national policy. In addition to agriculture areas, the main oil contaminated sites are a gas station, oil reservoir, petro-chemical complex, site of railway carriage base and military camp. The contamination-frequency of agriculture area and effect sites are low but it has significantly important area on account of producing food for human beings. Therefore, we should be concerned about oil contamination damage of agriculture area. The oil contamination damage of agriculture area influenced drop of birth and breeding since the oil directly adheres to seeds and farm products even diffusion of contaminated soil to cultivation area. The studies of the crops and the food vegetation has not enough detailed data caused by the incident of oil contamination. This study investigated the effect of oil in germination and growth of selected plant seeds. In this study, we try to verify whether the oil contamination by accidents on farmland influenced the damage of farm produce and the mutual relation both oil contaminated soil or the vegetation of crops. The impact of oil on plant development was followed by phytotoxicity assessments. The plants exhibited visual symptoms of stress, growth reduction and perturbations in developmental parameters. The increase of the degree of pollution induced more marked effects in plants, likely because of the physical effects of oil. The relationships between the phytotoxicity contents of plants and growth reduction suggest a chemical toxicity of fuel oil. In addition, while cleaned up the contaminated soil under the standard of contaminated soil we examined it was suitable for region standard and it may have practical possibility for fill material of construction of afforestation and molding soil of landfill.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is the most economically important viral infectious disease in pig populations worldwide. This study was conducted to better understand the epidemic and dynamics of PRRS virus (PRRSV) on each farm and to evaluate the risk of PRRSV infection in Korea. Interviews with pig farmers were carried out to obtain PRRS vaccination programmes in 60 pig farms throughout Korea. Blood samples were also collected from the 59 pig farms to investigate outbreak patterns of each farm. Vaccination against PRRS was performed in 16.7% farms for breeding pigs and 8.3% of farms for nursery pigs. According to the seroepidemiological analysis, 56 (94.9%) out of 59 farms were considered to be affected by PRRSV infection. The results revealed that 68.9% of sows tested were seroconverted and interestingly, gilt herds had the highest seropositive rate (73%), suggesting that gilts may play a key role in PRRSV transmission in sow herds. Among the PRRS-affected piglet herds, 33 (55.9%), 14 (23.7%) and 6 (10.2%) farms were initially infected with PRRSV during the weaning, suckling and nursery period, respectively. It seems likely, therefore, that PRRSV infection predominantly occurs around the weaning period in piglet herds. Based on antibody seroprevalence levels in both sow and piglet groups, we were able to classify patterns of PRRSV infection per farm unit into 4 categories; category 1 (stable sow groups and non-infected piglet groups), category 2 (unstable sow groups and non-infected piglet groups), category 3 (stable sow groups and infected piglet groups), and category 4 (unstable sow groups and infected piglet groups). Our data suggested that 43 (72.9%) farms were analysed to belong to category 4, which is considered to be at high-risk for PRRS outbreak. Taken together, our information from this study will provide insight into the establishment of an effective control strategy for PRRS on the field.

The coastal area is the place where two conflicting values provide opportunities for recreation, tourism and conservation of the natural environment. Most of these coastal areas have been disregarded in terms of tourism because of the high value placed on natural resources. Management strategy has usually been first on the priority list of natural. resources. However, due to the significant number of visitors, the Important-Satisfaction Analysis(ISA) was applied as a mean of complement since the 1970s. This study analyzed the difference between visitor satisfaction and the importance of the main management strategy targeting visitors to Sun-cheon Bay Ecological Park on weekdays and weekends. Results show that Sun-cheon Bay Ecological Park and the city government have paid a lot of attention and invested a lot of money, but efficiency of publicity didn't come up to their afford. Therefore, we should prepare information facilities, public education facilities and human power. Also needed are visitors' temporal-spacial control to set specific programs and a guide for information education control. It means visitors' company forms change depends on weekday and weekend. In addition, a breeding space for birds should be built for observation, education and exhibition to help meet visitor expectations. Visitors' positive satisfaction might be provided in establishing strategy as a very important measure in limited area. In conclusion, this study might be provided as preliminary data when the management strategy and related guidelines are established through the management priority of coastal regions where importance and satisfaction conflict.
The present experiments were carried out to understand the genetic structure of the natural population by means of the frequencies of recessive lethal and sterility genes on the second chromosomes of Drosophila melanogaster. The natural populations used for experiment were Anyang, Kimpo and Ulsan populations in 1982 and 1983. The mean frequencies of deleterious gene (lethal plus semilethal) were estimated 29.01% in Anyang, 30.07% in Kimpo and 32.31% in Ulsan population. Allelism rates on the chromosome between lethals extracted from natural populations were examined within or between populations. The mean allelism rates were showed 2.28% in Anyang, 1.90% in Kimpo and 2.17% in Ulsan. The values of elimination $(IQ^2)$ were estimated by frequencies of deleterious genes and allelism rates. The mean values of elimination were 0.0020 in Anyang, 0.0019 in Kimpo and 0.0023 in Ulsan population. The effective population size was estimated by using a formula by Nei. Anyang, Kimpo and Ulsan populations were about 2, 900, 3, 600 and 3, 200, respecively. These data suggest that Korean populations of Drosophila melanogaster attained to stable breeding units of intermediate size, ranging from 2, 900 to 3, 600 pairs of fertile individuals.
Fifty-nine accessions of 23 species in genus Rosa were collected, and 15 accessions of Rosa rugosa were collected throughout 10 regions of Korea. Their genetic relationship was investigated by using morphological analysis and RAPD marker. The morphological analysis was measured for 7 quantitative and quantified for 4 qualitative traits. RAPD analysis obtained a total of 959 polymorphic bands by using twenty primers. Morphological analysis classified most according to the rose section system except for several species. The cluster analysis of genus Rosa based on RAPD data could identify the subgenus $Platyrhodon$ and $Eurosa$. The subgenus $Eurosa$ separated five sections; $Gallicanae$, $Cinnamomeae$, $Pimpinellifoliae$, $Synstylae$ and $Caninae$. Correlation analysis between morphological and RAPD analysis showed low significance ($r$ = 0.35). The accessions of R. rugosa belonged to the section $Cinnamomeae$ clustered into three groups at genetic distance ranging from 0.28 on the base of RAPD analysis. In conclusion, the genetic relationship of the genus Rosa was consistent to the previously reported rose section system, and domestic collections of $R.$$rugosa$ were separated from 3 groups on the base of RAPD marker.
Compatible and incompatible interactions of near-isogenic lines containing one of Xa1, Xa3, and Xa7 resistance genes with Japanese bacterial blight isolates (T7174, T7147, and T7133) were examined in order to determine the variation of bacterial blight resistance and the stability of resistance gene. IRBB 101 line having a Xal gene was compatible (host susceptible) with T7147 and T7133 isolates but incompatible (host resistant) with T7174 isolate at all the tested rice growth stages. IRBB 103 line having a Xa3 gene was susceptible or moderately resistant to the three isolates at seedling and maximum tillering stage but resistant at heading stage. IRBB 101 line having a Xa7 gene was semi-compatible with the three isolates at seedling stage but incompatible at the other growth stages. Overall there were clear differences between compatible and incompatible interactions of rice with Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae races. In the mixed inoculations of compatible and incompatible isolates, the lesion length from near-isogenic lines decreased as the ratios of incompatible races increased. When the distinction between compatible and incompatible isolates was unclear, there was almost no variation of lesion length regardless of mixed ratios. The pathogenicity of the mixed races in the incompatible Interactions increased rather than the individual inoculation whereas the lesion length of compatible interactions was similar to that of the individual inoculation. These data indicate the incompatible races inhibit the virulence of a compatible race but compatible races increase the disease occurrence due to incompatible races. Furthermore, IRBB 107 line that showed resistance to all the isolates at all the tested growth stages was considered as a good parent f3r breeding of resistant variety.
This study was performed to test the cellulose digestibility using the transgenic pigs harboring cellulose degradation gene D (CelD). After delivered offsprings between normal pig and transgenic swine, DNA was isolated from piglets tail for PCR analysis. In first generation, five out of 65 piglets showed CelD positive. Unfortunately, four CelD-positive pigs were died during growing, but one survived pig was used as a transgenic founder to produce F$_1$ descendents. Among 3 F$_1$ transgenic pigs produced, one died and the remaining two pigs were used to test the fiber digest efficiency. An assorted feed was composite of 5% fiber with other ingredients. The feed of 3 kg per day was provided to the pigs including transgenic founders and littermate controls. The manure quantity was measured daily for a month, and all manures were dried for three days to analysis nitrogen, phosphate and fiber concentrations. The fiber digestion efficiencies of the transgenic F$_1$ pigs showed approximately 10% higher than those of control pigs. Fiber digestion was not greatly improved in transgenic pigs as it had been expected approximately 30%. Nitrogen concentration of transgenic pig's manure was slowly decreased compare to the control pigs. Because there were only two transgenic pigs tested, a large number of transgenic pigs may be necessary to obtain more reliable data. Breeding of animals to obtain sufficient transgenic pigs subjected for a further study is on progress. Taken together, this study demonstrated successful production of transgenic pigs with increase of cellulose digestibility in the porcine feed.

Forest occupied a part of natural ecosystem carries out a role of purifying air, preserving water resource, prevention of the breeding and extermination, recreation areas and etc that preserve and for me one's living environment. In this study, the classification for management of this forest is performed with Landsat TM Image. The classes are decided needle-leaf trees, broad-leaf trees, farming land and grass land, and water. When the TM digital images are classified on computer, water is represented in 7∼13 D.N. of 4th band. But the others is appeared similar mostly specific values so that must be done image processing. When the images compounded 2ed band and 3ed band are processed with ratio of enhancement. Needle-leaf treas is represented in l18∼136 D.N. of 1st band, broad-leaf trees in 72∼91 D.N. of 3ed band, farm land and glass land in 96∼120 of 3ed band. Forest Information is classified with M.L.C, an image classification method. The errors of needle-leaf trees, broad-leaf trees, farm land and grass land, and water are appeared each -7.43, +1.89,+7.58 and -2.04 as compared the digital image with investigation on the scene. Finally, these results are useful for classification of forest vegetation with Landsat TM Image.
The data were consisted of 1,262 records for carcass traits observed at Hanwoo steers from 1998 to 2001 at Namwon and Deakwanryung branch of National Livestock Research Institute, Rural Development Administration. Pedigrees of young bulls were traced back to search for magnifying inbreeding. Genetic parameters for carcass traits with Gibbs sampling in a threshold animal model were compared to estimates with REML algorithm in linear model. As the results, most of bulls were not inbred and sire pedigree group was non-inbred population. However, most of the bulls fell in some relationship with each other. Heritability estimates as fully posterior means by Gibbs samplers in threshold model were higher than those by REML in linear model. Furthermore, these estimates in threshold model using GS showed higher estimates than estimates using tested young bulls in previous study and same model. Heritability estimate by GS for marbling score was 0.74 and genetic correlation estimate between marbling score and body weight at slaughter was –0.44. Further study for correlation of breeding values between REML algorithm in linear model and Gibbs sampling algorithm in threshold model was needed.
