  • The breathable film refers to a high-functional film that allows gas and water vapor to pass through very fine and sophisticated pores but not liquid. In this research, the breathable film was prepared based on linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and CaCO3 particles by extrude method. The LLDPE composite film containing CaCO3 particles had excellent mechanical properties and functionalties. The drawing is a technologically simple and excellent method for improving the mechanical properties of composite films. In this work, the effects of draw ratio on morphology, crystallinity, pore size distribution, mechanical properties, and water vapor permeability of the films were examined. The results revealed that both surface morphology and breathability were affected by the influence of chain orientation and crystal growth with increasing the draw ratio. The mechanical properties were improved with increasing the draw ratio.

  • We introduce a novel outdoor linear LED luminaire enhanced with Gore-Tex filters, designed to overcome the challenges of moisture and thermal management in harsh environments. This luminaire integrates expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE)-commercially known as Gore-Tex-achieving superior waterproofing and dustproof qualities while maintaining breathability to prevent internal condensation. The design process, from conceptualization through prototyping and testing, is detailed, highlighting the luminaire's improved durability and stability under varying conditions. Experimental results demonstrate that our design significantly extends the operational lifespan and reliability of outdoor LED lighting systems by mitigating thermal and moisture-related degradation. This study not only advances ePTFE's application in lighting technologies but also offers a scalable model for enhancing the performance of LED luminaires in outdoor settings.

  • A compact triple-band porous electromagnetic bandgap structure-loaded coplanar-waveguide-fed wearable antenna is introduced for applications of wireless body area networks. The porous structure is aimed to create a stopband or bandgap in the electromagnetic spectrum and increase breathability. The holes in the bottom electromagnetic bandgap surface increase the inductance, which in turn increases the bandwidth. The final design resonates at three bands with impedance bandwidths of 264 MHz, 100 MHz, and 153 MHz and maximum gains of 2.18 dBi, 6.75 dBi, and 9.50 dBi at 2.45 GHz, 3.5 GHz, and 5.5 GHz, respectively. In addition, measurements indicate that the proposed design can be deformed up to certain curvature and withstand human tissue loading. Moreover, the specific absorption rate remains within safe levels for humans. Therefore, the proposed antenna can suitably operate in the industrial, scientific, and medical, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and WiMAX bands for potential application to wireless body area networks.

  • Silica-polyurethane hybrid breathable films were prepared and their breathabilities were assessed. Appropriately aggregated silica was prepared through sol-gel reaction of water glass and its particle size ranged 360~500nm. The polyurethane dispersion was prepared by the reaction of isophorone diisocyanate(IPDI) as diisocyanate and polytetramethylene glycol(PTMG) and dimethylol propionic acid(DMPA) as polyol, particle size ranging 30~120nm. The reaction between isocyanate and hydroxyl group to form urethane bonding was checked by the intensity of the stretch peak of isocyanate at $2270cm^{-1}$ in the FT-IR. The silica was incorporated into polyurethane dispersion and casted into film. It was shown that the incorporated silica(1~5wt.%) increased water vapour permeability of the films by 30~100%, and decreased the hydrostatic pressure by 10~40%. From the results, it could be concluded that the appropriate hybridization of silica can increase the breathability of polyurethane dispersion film, while minimizing the loss of hydrostatic pressure.

  • The importance of protecting people from harsh weather conditions cannot be over-emphasized and the way to. do so should be sought vigorously. The most well known and widely used weather protection fabric in the current industry is $Gor-Tex.^1$ However, the Gore-Tex membrane cannot be attached to cotton or other natural fibers so it's use is not suitable for clothing such as underwear. If the exterior of cotton fabric can be made to be hydrophobic without sacrificing the comfort and breathability, the result will be a cotton fabric with the weather protection capability equivalent to Gore-Tex as well as the ability to provide the best wear comfort. However, this should be done without using toxic and expensive gases to be environmentally friendly and cost effective. Therefore, our approach for hydrophobic treatments of fabric and metal surfaces is to utilize a plasma-based technique. In general, plasma processes do not produce chemical wastes or waste disposal problems and they are fully automated.

  • This study investigated the flame retardant, anti-static property and wear comfort of knitted fabrics made of two kinds of composite yarns comprised of modacryl, antistatic PET, cotton and excel(R) fibers. A Low Oxygen Index (LOI) above 28 was observed in the modacryl knitted fabric specimens. The flame retardant was superior at the excel(R) fiber (including modacryl knitted fabric) than the one including cotton fiber. Anti-static properties of the modacryl knitted fabrics imbedded by 3wt% of antistatic PET fibers were observed by rubbing with wool fabric attached to the measuring apparatus, which showed a better anti-static property than the excel(R) fiber (including modacryl knitted fabric). Wear comfort indicated that quick perspiration absorption and the fast dry property of excel(R) (including modacryl knitted fabric) was better than one that included cotton fiber. Warmth keepability and breathability of the knitted fabrics indicated good results in the excel(R) (including cotton and the modacryl knitted fabrics). However, the tactile hand property of cotton fiber (including modacryl knitted fabric) was better than excel(R) fiber due to high extensibility and compressibility, and low bending and shear rigidity of the cotton fiber (including modacryl knitted fabrics).

  • Ambient air pollution, in particular, particulate matter (PM) pollution imposes serious health concerns such as hospitalization and premature deaths, worldwide. While commercial breathing masks are in use for protection against this hazardous issue, yet their efficiency in filtering PM was not up to the par, besides several other discomforts such as poor breathability due to reduced air flow, sweat production etc. In this study, commercial face mask coated with β-glucan, a high molecular weight polymer is tested for its efficacy in filtering PM. Quantification of PM before and after filtration and microscopic observation (using scanning electron microscopy (SEM)) of the fabric used in filtering the dust pollutants (generated from wood chips and cigarette) showed that β-glucan coated fabric were significantly efficient in capturing PM (size of 10 and 2.5 ㎛ in diameter) than that of the untreated control fabric, wherein the former had filtration efficacy with fold increase of 11.6 and 2.6 towards capturing PM2.5 and PM10 respectively than the latter. Thus, β-glucan coated fabric was found to be effective in filtering PM.

  • A helmet is essential for safety when operating personal mobility. However, user's actual helmet wear rate is low due to the inconvenience of wearing and poor ventilation. In this study, a new helmet structure with improved ventilation for personal mobility devices was designed. To design a new structure with improved breathability compared to the existing helmet while satisfying the safety regulations for the helmet, a generative design method was applied to the shock-absorbing liner of the helmet. In addition, other materials were applied to create a structure with improved ventilation while maintaining safety. The generated design result was verified for shock absorption through simulation. As a result of the study, EPS, the current material was replaced with CFRP and Kevlar, and the structure was changed. This design was judged to satisfy safety regulations against impact. The new helmet structure is expected to improve the helmet usability for personal mobility and increase the helmet wear rate of users.

  • Respiratory face masks are protective facepieces that are designed to filter inhaled air. They are easy-to-use devices that can protect the wearer against various hazardous particles in the air. Respiratory face masks also prevent the spread of viruses and bacteria-containing droplets that are released from the coughing or sneezing of the infected people. During the COVID-19 pandemic, various types of face masks have circulated on the market. Their ability to filter sub-micron particles, which are the sizes of harmful particulate matter and airborne viruses, needs to be investigated. Their breathability, the easiness of breath through the mask, also needs to be considered. In this study, wwe evaluated the performance of filters used for different types of face masks certified by different standards including Korean (KF94, KF80, KF-AD), USA (N95), and Chinese (KN95) standards. We also tested the filters of nanofiber masks and surgical masks for which there are no standards for filtration test. The N95 mask filters showed the highest quality factor for capturing virus-sized particles. The other types of mask filters have acceptable performance except for nanofiber mask filters whose performance is very low.
