수 감각의 인지신경학적 기반에 관한 연구 개관 (A Review of the Neurocognitive Mechanisms of Number Sense)

  • 사람과 동물은 수량(numerosity)의 대략적인 많고 적음에 대한 직관적 판단 능력을 가지고 태어난다. 이를 대략적 수 감각(이하, 수 감각, number sense)이라 한다. 수 감각은 오래 전부터 동물의 수렵, 채취, 사냥 및 생존에 필수적인 능력으로 진화된 것으로 추정된다. 선행 연구에 따르면, 수학 발달 장애를 가진 아동은 수 감각이 정상적인 아동에 비해 매우 둔감하다. 반대로, 수 감각이 민감한 사람들은 수학적 성취도가 더 높다. 이러한 결과는 생애 초기부터 발달하는 수 감각 표상의 정확도가 학령기 이후 숫자에 기반한 수학적 인지 발달의 근간이 된다는 가설을 뒷받침한다. 최근 연구들은 수 감각 훈련을 통해 수학 성취도의 향상과 수학 관련 뇌 기능의 변화를 가져올 수 있는지를 검증하고 있다. 한편, 수량은 불연속적인 양(discrete quantity)으로서 길이, 면적, 시간 등 연속적인 양(continuous quantity)과 밀접한 관계가 있을 것으로 기대할 수 있다. 이와 같은 관점에서 수, 시간, 공간 등 다양한 차원의 양적인 표상의 정보처리는 후측 두정엽(posterior parietal cortex), 특히 두정 내 고랑(intraparietal sulcus, IPS)에 위치한 공통의 뇌 기제(common brain mechanism)에 기반한다는 가설이 대두되었다. 이 가설을 검증하는 실험적 증거와 후속 연구의 방향을 소개한다.

Beyond Clot Dissolution; Role of Tissue Plasminogen Activator in Central Nervous System

  • Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is a serine protease catalyzing the proteolytic conversion of plasminogen into plasmin, which is involved in thrombolysis. During last two decades, the role of tPA in brain physiology and pathology has been extensively investigated. tPA is expressed in brain regions such as cortex, hippocampus, amygdala and cerebellum, and major neural cell types such as neuron, astrocyte, microglia and endothelial cells express tPA in basal status. After strong neural stimulation such as seizure, tPA behaves as an immediate early gene increasing the expression level within an hour. Neural activity and/or postsynaptic stimulation increased the release of tPA from axonal terminal and presumably from dendritic compartment. Neuronal tPA regulates plastic changes in neuronal function and structure mediating key neurologic processes such as visual cortex plasticity, seizure spreading, cerebellar motor learning, long term potentiation and addictive or withdrawal behavior after morphine discontinuance. In addition to these physiological roles, tPA mediates excitotoxicity leading to the neurodegeneration in several pathological conditions including ischemic stroke. Increasing amount of evidence also suggest the role of tPA in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis even though beneficial effects was also reported in case of Alzheimer's disease based on the observation of tPA-induced degradation of $A{\beta}$ aggregates. Target proteins of tPA action include extracellular matrix protein laminin, proteoglycans and NMDA receptor. In addition, several receptors (or binding partners) for tPA has been reported such as low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein (LRP) and annexin II, even though intracellular signaling mechanism underlying tPA action is not clear yet. Interestingly, the action of tPA comprises both proteolytic and non-proteolytic mechanism. In case of microglial activation, tPA showed non-proteolytic cytokine-like function. The search for exact target proteins and receptor molecules for tPA along with the identification of the mechanism regulating tPA expression and release in the nervous system will enable us to better understand several key neurological processes like teaming and memory as well as to obtain therapeutic tools against neurodegenerative diseases.

최근 17년간(1988년-2004년) 학교내 학생 돌연사 빈도 및 추이 분석 (A study of incidence and trend of unexpected sudden death of studentsin school during 17 years from 1988 to 2004 in seoul)

  • Purpose : This study was to identify the incidence, trend, and situation of the unexpected sudden death of elementary, middle, and high school students in school for 17 years from 1988 to 2004 in seoul. Methods : We used the data of The Seoul Safety Mutual aid Association in seoul. Subjects were 53 unexpected sudden death in school from elementary, middle, and high school students, and we explored the gender, month, a day of the week, year, contents of situation, and medical certificate of death. Statistic analysis were chi-square test, Cochran-Armitage trend test, and the tool was SAS 9.1.Results : There were 53 unexpected sudden death students(male 42 and female 11). The incidence of male students was higher than that of female during 16 years except in 1995. The incidence occurred in middle school students were 31 (58.5%) of 53 and were also most frequent in middle school students in both of male and female students. In 1990, the incidence was 8(15.1%) students, 6(11.3%) in 1992 , and 5(9,4%) in 2000 respectively. The frequency of unsuspected sudden death in March was 11(20.8%) of 53 students, 11 (20.8%) in September, 7(13.2%) in October. In Thursday, it was 12(22.6%) of 53 students. Only 14(26.4%) students of 53 died during general life, but 39(73.6%) were related to excercise. The diagnosis of 14 students died during general life were cardiac arrest 7(50.5%), brain disorder 3(21.4%) which were based on medical certificate. But the diagnosis of 39 students died during or after excercise were brain disorder including cerebral hemorrhage 9(23.1%), heart disease 9(23.1%), cardiac arrest 8(20.5%), and unknown 6(15.4%), respectively. Conclusion : The incidence of unexpected sudden death were more frequent in male students, in middle school, and in excercise-related situation and the trend was similar for 17 years. Therefore, to prevent the unexpected sudden death, it needs to further study substantially the risk factors of unexpected sudden death including past history, life-style, nutrition and development, family history, and learning environment.

Unsuspected Plasticity of Single Neurons after Connection of the Corticospinal Tract with Peripheral Nerves in Spinal Cord Lesions

  • Objective: To report an unsuspected adaptive plasticity of single upper motor neurons and of primary motor cortex found after microsurgical connection of the spinal cord with peripheral nerve via grafts in paraplegics and focussed discussion of the reviewed literature. Methods: The research aimed at making paraplegics walk again, after 20 years of experimental surgery in animals. Amongst other things, animal experiments demonstrated the alteration of the motor endplates receptors from cholinergic to glutamatergic induced by connection with upper motor neurons. The same paradigm was successfully performed in paraplegic humans. The nerve grafts were put into the ventral-lateral spinal tract randomly, with out possibility of choosing the axons coming from different areas of the motor cortex. Results: The patient became able to selectively activate the re-innervated muscles she wanted without concurrent activities of other muscles connected with the same cortical areas. Conclusion: Authors believe that unlike in nerve or tendon transfers, where the whole cortical area corresponding to the transfer changes its function a phenomenon that we call "brain plasticity by areas". in our paradigm due to the direct connection of upper motor neurons with different peripheral nerves and muscles via nerve grafts motor learning occurs based on adaptive neuronal plasticity so that simultaneous contractions of other muscles are prevented. We propose to call it adaptive functional "plasticity by single neurons". We speculate that this phenomenon is due to the simultaneous activation of neurons spread in different cortical areas for a given specific movement, whilst the other neurons of the same areas connected with peripheral nerves of different muscles are not activated at the same time. Why different neurons of the same area fire at different times according to different voluntary demands remains to be discovered. We are committed to solve this enigma hereafter.

치매 진단을 위한 MRI 바이오마커 패치 영상 기반 3차원 심층합성곱신경망 분류 기술 (Using 3D Deep Convolutional Neural Network with MRI Biomarker patch Images for Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis)

  • The Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease commonly found in the elderly individuals. It is one of the most common forms of dementia; patients with AD suffer from a degradation of cognitive abilities over time. To correctly diagnose AD, compuated-aided system equipped with automatic classification algorithm is of great importance. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning based classification algorithm that takes advantage of MRI biomarker images including brain areas of hippocampus and cerebrospinal fluid for the purpose of improving the AD classification performance. In particular, we develop a new approach that effectively applies MRI biomarker patch images as input to 3D Deep Convolution Neural Network. To integrate multiple classification results from multiple biomarker patch images, we proposed the effective confidence score fusion that combine classification scores generated from soft-max layer. Experimental results show that AD classification performance can be considerably enhanced by using our proposed approach. Compared to the conventional AD classification approach relying on entire MRI input, our proposed method can improve AD classification performance of up to 10.57% thanks to using biomarker patch images. Moreover, the proposed method can attain better or comparable AD classification performances, compared to state-of-the-art methods.

대학도서관의 포털서비스에 대한 원격대학생의 인식도 연구 (A Research on the Awareness of Cyber University Students on the Digital Library Portal Service)

  • 이 연구는 원격대학생 집단을 대상으로 디지털도서관의 포털서비스에 대한 인식도를 조사하였다. 원격대학생들의 특성을 파악하고자 인구통계학적 특성과 도서관 이용행태를 조사하였다. 또한 이용자 특성에 따른 도서관 포털서비스 인식도를 다음과 같이 분석하였다. 원격대학생이 가장 필요한 도서관 포털서비스는 간략/상세검색서비스이며, 동시에 가장 높은 사용률을 보였다. 연계서비스에 대한 원격 학생들의 만족도가 가장 높았다. 응답자의 연령, 직업에 따른 일부 도서관 포털서비스 인식도에서 통계적으로 유의한 결과를 발견하였다. 이상의 분석결과를 토대로 원격대학생들의 도서관 포털에 대한 이용률을 높이기 위한 방안으로 도서관 서비스에 대한 적극적인 홍보, 도서관이용자교육의 강화를 제안하였다.

Robert Lee Moore의 교수법과 한국에서의 의미 (R. L. Moore's Moore Method and its meaning in Korea)

  • 1890년에 설립된 시카고대의 초대 수학과장으로 미국수학사에서 결정적 역할을 담당했던 E. H. Moore는 걸출한 인재들을 길러내며 20세기 전반에 미국수학이 수학연구의 주류로 진입하는데 결정적 기여를 하였다. 그는 시카고대에서 실험적 교수법을 시도하였고, 그 결과, 연구력이 뛰어난 수많은 제자를 배출하였다. R. L. Moore는 E. H. Moore의 실험적 교수법과는 차별화된, 지금은 Texas 교수법 또는 Moore 교수법으로 알려져 있는 새로운 방식의 수학교수법을 대학수학교육에 적용하였다. 그는 20세기 전반, 미국수학이 빠르게 발전하는 과정에서 결정적인 역할을 담당했던 Veblen이나 Birkhoff와는 차별화된 중요한 역할을 수행하였다. 따라서 미국수학의 발전에 특별한 역할을 수행했던 R. L. Moore의 연구 경력과 Moore 교수법 및 R. L. Moore가 배출한 제자들의 역할에 대한 의미 있는 분석을 필요로 한다. 본 원고는 텍사스대에서 학문적 일생을 보낸 R. L. Moore와 그의 Moore 교수법, 또 그의 영향으로 탄생한 'American school of topology'가 미국수학사에서 갖는 의미를 분석하고, 20세기 전반 미국 수학의 학문적 도약과정이 현재의 한국수학계에 시사하는 바를 고찰한다.

Protective effects of Populus tomentiglandulosa against cognitive impairment by regulating oxidative stress in an amyloid beta25-35-induced Alzheimer's disease mouse model

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most representative neurodegenerative disease mainly caused by the excessive production of amyloid beta (Aβ). Several studies on the antioxidant activity and protective effects of Populus tomentiglandulosa (PT) against cerebral ischemia-induced neuronal damage have been reported. Based on this background, the present study investigated the protective effects of PT against cognitive impairment in AD. MATERIALS/METHODS: We orally administered PT (50 and 100 mg/kg/day) for 14 days in an Aβ25-35-induced mouse model and conducted behavioral experiments to test cognitive ability. In addition, we evaluated the levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in serum and measured the production of lipid peroxide, nitric oxide (NO), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in tissues. RESULTS: PT treatment improved the space perceptive ability in the T-maze test, object cognitive ability in the novel object recognition test, and spatial learning/long-term memory in the Morris water-maze test. Moreover, the levels of AST and ALT were not significantly different among the groups, indicating that PT did not show liver toxicity. Furthermore, administration of PT significantly inhibited the production of lipid peroxide, NO, and ROS in the brain, liver, and kidney, suggesting that PT protected against oxidative stress. CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated that administration of PT improved Aβ25-35-induced cognitive impairment by regulating oxidative stress. Therefore, we propose that PT could be used as a natural agent for AD improvement.

교모세포종 환자의 T1CE 영상 생성 및 암 영역분할을 위한 멀티 태스크 심층신경망 모델 (Multi-task Deep Neural Network Model for T1CE Image Synthesis and Tumor Region Segmentation in Glioblastoma Patients)

  • 신경 교세포에서 발생하는 가장 흔한 뇌 악성종양인 교모세포종은 조기 진단 및 치료계획 수립이 중요하다. 주로 조영제를 통해 촬영된 T1CE 영상을 통해 암의 진단이 이뤄지는데, 최근 가돌리늄 기반 조영제 주입의 위험이 보고되고 있다. 의료영상에서 새로운 영상을 합성하는 GAN 모델과 영역분할에 대한 심층신경망 모델에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 교모세포종 환자의 T1CE 영상의 생성과 암의 영역분할을 동시에 학습하는 하나의 모델을 제안한다. 제안된 모델의 성능은 평균 제곱오차, 최대신호대잡음비 등의 유사성 측정을 통해 평가되어 0.002, 55dB의 평균 결과 값을 보여준다.

Generative Adversarial Network-Based Image Conversion Among Different Computed Tomography Protocols and Vendors: Effects on Accuracy and Variability in Quantifying Regional Disease Patterns of Interstitial Lung Disease

  • Objective: To assess whether computed tomography (CT) conversion across different scan parameters and manufacturers using a routable generative adversarial network (RouteGAN) can improve the accuracy and variability in quantifying interstitial lung disease (ILD) using a deep learning-based automated software. Materials and Methods: This study included patients with ILD who underwent thin-section CT. Unmatched CT images obtained using scanners from four manufacturers (vendors A-D), standard- or low-radiation doses, and sharp or medium kernels were classified into groups 1-7 according to acquisition conditions. CT images in groups 2-7 were converted into the target CT style (Group 1: vendor A, standard dose, and sharp kernel) using a RouteGAN. ILD was quantified on original and converted CT images using a deep learning-based software (Aview, Coreline Soft). The accuracy of quantification was analyzed using the dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and pixel-wise overlap accuracy metrics against manual quantification by a radiologist. Five radiologists evaluated quantification accuracy using a 10-point visual scoring system. Results: Three hundred and fifty CT slices from 150 patients (mean age: 67.6 ± 10.7 years; 56 females) were included. The overlap accuracies for quantifying total abnormalities in groups 2-7 improved after CT conversion (original vs. converted: 0.63 vs. 0.68 for DSC, 0.66 vs. 0.70 for pixel-wise recall, and 0.68 vs. 0.73 for pixel-wise precision; P < 0.002 for all). The DSCs of fibrosis score, honeycombing, and reticulation significantly increased after CT conversion (0.32 vs. 0.64, 0.19 vs. 0.47, and 0.23 vs. 0.54, P < 0.002 for all), whereas those of ground-glass opacity, consolidation, and emphysema did not change significantly or decreased slightly. The radiologists' scores were significantly higher (P < 0.001) and less variable on converted CT. Conclusion: CT conversion using a RouteGAN can improve the accuracy and variability of CT images obtained using different scan parameters and manufacturers in deep learning-based quantification of ILD.
