Eight calanoid species of 4 genera in 4 families are reported from the various brackish waters such as estuaries, brackish-water lakes, and coastal marshes in South Korea. Among them, Eurytemora affinis (Poppe) and Acartia (Acanthacartia) tsuensis Ito are newly added to Korean copepod fauna. Collection data, brief descriptions, illustrations and distribution maps for the eight species are prepared. A key to the genera and species of the brackish-water calanoids from Korea is also presented.

Marine copepods are ideal live prey for fish larvae, and many studies on the mass culture of the organism have been reported. This study performed a mass culture of the brackish copepod Paracyclopina nana containing nauplius and C4-adult production methods. In nauplius production, the harvested nauplii over 95% were comprised of N1 and N2. Daily mean nauplius production of two trials for 15 days were $6.9{\times}10^6$ and $7.2{\times}10^6$ individuals, respectively. The densities of the adult females were maintained at a similar level of the initiation during production. In C4-adult production, the proportion of harvested copepods containing C4-adult males, females and ovigerus females were 49%, 28%, and 18%, respectively. The daily mean nauplius production of the two trials for 16 days were $8.2{\times}10^5$ and $9.0{\times}10^5$ individuals, respectively. As a result, the continuous production of P. nana using the mass production system was successful. Therefore, the continuous and stable feeding for fish larvae in aquaculture would be possible by the selection of the copepod culture method depending on the mouth size of the fish.
To determine the optimum light intensity for mass culture of the brackish-water cyclopoid copepod Paracyclopina nana, survival, growth, and productivity of the copepod were examined at several light intensities (0, 10, 100, 500, 1,000 lx). The survival rate of P. nana from nauplius to adult decreased with increasing light intensity. The highest survival rate was found under the dark condition, with 61.7% surviving; no significant difference was observed between 0 and 10 lx (51.7%) and the lowest survival rate was with 100 lx (26.7%). Survival rates at 500 and 1,000 lx were significantly lower in comparison with other conditions. The developmental period from nauplius to copepodid (5.8 days) and to adult (11.8 days) at 10 lx was significantly shorter than in the other treatments. Daily mean nauplius production of adult females over 7 days at 0, 10 and 100 lx was significantly higher than at 500 and 1,000 lx. In the 1,000 lx treatment, 99% of the adult females died on the $14^{th}$ day. The optimum light intensity for the mass culture of P. nana could be 10 lx, which had no adverse effects on survival, development, or reproduction.
This study selected the optimal microalgal species for mass culture of a brackish water copepod Paracyclopina nana. Fifteen microalgal species were tested to examine nauplius production and the survival and maturation of brood females. Total and daily nauplius production were highest in P. nana fed Tetraselmis suecica followed Isochrysis galbana, Dunaliella tertiolecta, and Phaeodactylum tricornutum. With a monospecific microalgal diet, the total density was highest with P. nana fed I. galbana, at 63.3 inds./mL. With a mixed microalgal diet, the total density of P. nana fed T. suecica+I. galbana was higher than that fed other mixed diets, although there was no difference between a monospecific diet of I. galbana and a mixed diet of T. suecica+I. galbana. Examining the fatty acid composition of P. nana, the eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) was highest in P. nana fed T. suecica at 5.4% while the docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) content was highest I. galbana diet at 31.9%. Although no DHA was detected in T. suecica, P. nana fed this microalgal species had a high DHA composition of 24.3%. We suggest that the optimal microalgal species for the mass culture of P. nana is T. suecica which is easy to culture on masse and has a high linolenic acid content.

Zooplankton community structure and copepod production in Seomjin River estuary were investigated at 10 stations along the salinity gradients from May 2009 to February 2010. Total zooplankton taxa were identified to be 31 in the study area and seasonal average abundance of zooplankton was $4,151\;ind.{\cdot}m^{-3}$ during the study period. Zooplankton community was mainly composed of coastal species in dry season. However, brackish species dominated in upper or middle part of this estuary in flood season. This study showed that the growth rates of Acartia spp. and Paracalanus parvus s.l. measured from field experiments were regulated by the variations of Hater temperature and salinity; The annual copepod production estimated by dominant copepod species was $3.49\;g\;C{\cdot}m^{-2}yr^{-1}$, and the relatively high production value could be explained by the high phytoplankton standing stocks and the mass occurrence of coastal and brackish species with relation to various salinity gradients in Seomjin River estuary.
The calanoid copepod Tortanus (Eutortanus) dextrilobatus Chen and Zhang, 1965, which had been recorded only from South China, is redescribed from brackish waters in South Korea. The diagnosis of the little known subgenus Eutortanus is presented hear. The zoogeography of five species of Eutortanus is also discussed.
A new laophontid copepod species, Apolethon articulatus n. sp., is described from the estuaries and salt marshes in South Korea. Apolethon articulatus is similar to the three congeneric species currently known in sharing the character combination of the elongate first endopodal segment of leg 1 with inner seta and the expansion of second endopodal segments of legs 2-4 with decrease in the number of setae on them. However, A. articulatus differs from them by the separate exopod of female leg 5 and the armature of mandibular palp with 6 setae. Description and taxonomic accounts of the new species are presented herein with detailed illustrations and SEM micrographs. As the true identity of the rarely known genus has not been clarified yet, a revised generic diagnosis is provided with a key to the species hitherto known in the genus.

This study investigated the food value of Paracyclopina nana for flounder Paralichthys olivaceus larvae in two feeding stages, rotifer (for 12 days) and Artemia (for 16 days). In the rotifer feeding stage, survival and growth of flounder larvae in the only P. nana (nauplii) feeding experiment were higher than in the only rotifer feeding experiment on 12 DAH (days after hatching). In the Artemia feeding stage, the growth of flounder larvae in the only P. nana (C4-adult) feeding experiment and mixture feeding experiment (P. nana+Artemia) were higher than in other experiments on 30 DAH, but the survival of flounder larvae did not differ significantly among experiments. The n-3 HUFA contents of nauplius and C4-adult were 4.0% and 5.4%, respectively. Overall the results of this study indicate that the brackish water cyclopoid copepod, P. nana, is an effective live food organism for larval seedling production of marine fish.
Pre-monsoon dynamics of zooplankton community were investigated in the downstream of the Gagok stream flowing into the East Sea of Korea. Monthly sampling was carried out to collect zooplankters at five sites in the stream during the period between April and July 2014. Dissolved oxygen contents exceeded $7.0mg\;L^{-1}$ all the time. Water temperature was in a range of 15.7 to $24.9^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.4 to 8.8, respectively. A total of 75 taxa consisted of 36 species of rotifers, 16 species of cladocerans, 16 species of copepods, four kinds of aquatic insects, two kinds of decapods and one nematod was occurred. One species of marine copepod and one cladoceran, and one species of brackish rotifer and one copepod distributed at the station located in the stream mouth. Zooplankton abundance showed to vary from 42 to 4202 individuals $m^{-3}$ due to the explosion of aquatic insects and Alona sp. at site 2 located in the downstream in April. Heavy rainfall during the monsoon period seems to decrease the zooplankton abundance caused by diffusion and drifting to the sea. Species diversity indices were generally high between 1.2~2.3 and were recorded to be high at the downstream throughout the study period. With the zooplankton dynamics, the influence of the input of sea waters into the stream seemed to be confined to some hundred meters of the stream mouth facing the East Sea.
Pre-monsoon dynamics of zooplankton community were investigated in the estuary of the Tamjin River flowing into the Doam Bay of the southern coast of Korea. Monthly sampling was carried out to collect zooplankters at five sites in the estuary and the river during the period between March and June 2014. Dissolved oxygen contents were low between $5.0{\sim}7.0mgL^{-1}$ in the estuary and high, 7.0~11.0, in the river. Water temperature increased gradually from 12.0 to $28.0^{\circ}C$ and pH fluctuated between the range 7.4~8.8, respectively. A total of 85 taxa consisted of 25 species of rotifer, 30 kinds of copepod, 8 species of cladoceran, six kinds of aquatic insect larvae, four kinds of decapod and two kinds of Cirripedia larvae and Polychaeta larvae and one kind of Amphipoda, Ispopoda, Appenidicularia, Nematoda and Cnidaria, and Nocticluca scintillans was occurred. Brackish copepods distributed at almost all studied sites with freshwater zooplankters being restricted to upper waters of the river. Monthly succession of Acartia spp. was observed in the estuary with the occurrence of A. hudsonica in March and April then A. omori in May and June. Zooplankton abundance showed to vary from 450 to $87,818ind\;m^{-3}$ due to the explosion of copepodite and copepod nauplius in the estuary. Species diversity indices varied between 0.6~2.3 and generally low in the estuary and high in the river. Sea water input into the river seems to affect the river biota for more than some kilometers of the upper waters of the Tamjin River.
