The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between spatial ability and sex-role orientation in children. For this purpose, 303 boys and 293 girls were selected randomly. Spatial ability was measured by Embedded Figures Test. Sex-Role orientation was measured by the Children's Personal Attributes Questionnaire (Spence, Helmreich & Stapp, 1975) which was translated into Korean. An item analysis was done. For the data analysis, a three-way analysis of variance and t-test were applied. The results of the present study showed that 1) spatial ability gradually improved between 10 and 14 years of age. 2) There were no significant differences between girls and boys in the performance on the spatial ability test. 3) Masculinity in girls was not significantly associated with high spatial ability. However, there was a tendency for the masculine girls in the direction of higher spatial scores than feminine girls and undifferentiated girls. 4) Femininity in boys was not significantly associated with high spatial ability. However, there was a tendency for the feminine boys in the direction of higher spatial scores than masculine boys and undifferentiated boys.
The purpose of the survey was to Identify the degree and the relationship of sexual knowledge, sexual attitude. This information will provide useful data for a more systematic, desirable, and practical sex education. The data was collected from 187 first grade schoolchildren(95 boys and 92 girls) of two Junior high school in Chun-nam area. The data was gathered by questionnaire from Oct. 1 to 15, 1996. The questionnaire was modified by authors using the questionnaire developed by You-Jeong, Han (1996). Data was analyzed by using the statistical computer package, SAS to manipulate the data along with percentages, means, standard deviation, t-test, χ²-test, GLM, and Pearson correlation coeffiency. The results in this study were summarized as follows: 1. Sex related knowledges.-The mean score of sex related knowledges showed significant differences between boys and girls (boys : 22.3, girls .21.0, p<0.025), and in the area of pregnancy & delivary(boys : 9.4, girls : 7.9, P<0.000) showed significant difference between boys and girls, but in the area of physical differeces of the other sex(boys : 12.9, girls ; 13.1, p<0.551) showed no significant difference between boys and girls. 2. Sex related attitudes.-The mean score of sex related altitudes showed significant difference between boys and girls (boys : 56.7, girls : 60.5, p<0.002) and in the area of psychological difference the other sex(boys 28.9, girls : 32.5, p
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among snacking behaviors and depression in middle school students. A survey was conducted on 777 middle school students (491 boys and 286 girls). Using a self-reporting method, the participants took 20 minutes to complete the questionnaires. Our data revealed that the height and weight of boys were 172.66 cm and 63.48 kg, respectively, whereas those of girls were 159.86 cm and 51.62 kg, respectively. Sleep durations of boys and girls were 6.44 and 6.41 hours, respectively. Boys ate more rice cake than girls, whereas girls ate more biscuits than boys. The average B.D.I (Beck Depression inventory) scores for boys and girls were 9.73 and 11.49, respectively. Degree of depression was significantly higher in girls compared to boys. We also observed significant correlations between depression and snacking (rice cake, biscuits, chocolate, and fried potato). This study may provide basic information on snacking behaviors and depression in middle school students, and the findings suggest that proper control of emotions is required to maintain desirable eating behaviors in middle school students.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the preference for female teacher's appearance of the high school boys and girls. A survey was conducted on 400 high school sophomores, juniors and seniors in Chungcheong province, who included both boys and girls. And the answer sheets from 396 students were selected for analysis. For data handling, SPSS 12.0 program was employed to make a frequency analysis of every item, and descriptive statistics was utilized for every item as well. In addition, t-test and crosstabs were implemented to look for any possible gaps between the boys and girls. The results were as follows: Boys had a much more interest in the appearance of female teacher's face than girls. High school Students preferred to nature style in hair and make-up. Boys relatively more liked the teachers who were young, elegant and had feminine attraction than girls. Boys preferred to feminine and traditional than girls. But there were significant differences in the preference of hair shape and make-up color between boys and girls.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between covert/overt narcissism, self-control, and peers' vulgar slang use and school aged boys' and girls' vulgar slang use. The subjects consisted of 263 boys and 256 girls in the 5th and 6th grades attending elementary schools located in Daegu and Gyeongbuk Province. The data collected were analyzed by means of t-test, paired t-test, Pearson's correlation, simple regression, multiple regression, using the SPSS Win 19.0. The results were as follows. 1) School aged boys' and girls' vulgar slang was found to positively associated with covert/overt narcissism. 2) School aged boys' and girls' vulgar slang use was found to be negatively associated with self-control. 3) School aged boys' and girls' vulgar slang use was found to be positively associated with peers' vulgar slang use 4) Among the variables of covert/overt narcissism, self-control, and peers' vulgar slang use, peers' vulgar slang use was the best predictor for school aged boys' and girls' vulgar slang use.
This study was performed to formulate the most recent traits of physical growth of youth, and to identify the need of youth for health promotion planning in modern Korea. Study participants were 171 boys and 400 girls in two senior high schools in Seoul, Korea. Health records were collected from the individual students in May 2005. Longitudinal data on stature and body weight from 6 to 16 years old were analysed. Significance tests on some measures were performed by t-test and ANOVA. Major conclusions were as follows: 1. Girls were taller than boys during the specific time of adolescence. However, this phenomenon was not found in the growth process investigated by peak age and in over-all mean growth process of body weight. 2. Peak age came later in boys than in girls in both stature and body weight. This meant that boys matured later in stature and body weight than girls. However, boys were larger in peak velocity than girls. 3. Peak ages distributed more widely in girls than in boys both for stature and body weight. 4. Even in such short growth process from 6 through 16 years old, growth spurt tended to appear in several times. 5. Growth spurt tended to appear more often in boys than in girls.
Purpose: This study was to examine the possibility of the contact with pornographs of elementary school boys and girls and to confirm responses after that, and to compare the feeling of sexual conflict between the boys and girls. Methods: The subjects were 952 5th and 6th graders of elementary school in four city areas(456 boys, 496 girls). Data collection was via questionnaires Results: Except several pupils(34.4% of boys, 27.4% of girls), most of subjects of the study had no contact with pornographs. The response after the contact with pornographs was feeling of shame the most, which was a negative reaction. The sexual conflict appeared more in pupils who had contact with pornographs than in those who had not boys(t=3.84, p<.000), girls(t=3.96, p<.000), which showed a significant difference. However, the conflict between boys and girls was not significant statistically. Conclusion: We would like to suggest that a sound control system must be prepared and a development of programs related to sexual education and promotion of ability fighting against them that can release their impulse of sex.
This study investigated the association between the weight status of middle school students and the various weight-related characteristics including desired weight, weight perception, weight-related practice, physical activity, and overeating behavior. Questionnaires were administered to 473 middle school students (178 boys and 295 girls) in Daejeon. Boys and girls were divided into three groups respectively; (1) underweight (BMI<$5^{th}$ percentile) (2) normal weight ($5^{th}$ percentile$\leq$BMI<$85^{th}$ percentile) (3) overweight (BMI$\leq85^{th}$ percentile). Using BMI calculated from measured height and weight, 14.0% of boys and 6.8% of girls were underweight, and 16.3% of boys and 14.2% of girls were overweight. However, among this sample of students, 38.4% of boys and 13.6% of girls perceived themselves as underweight and 29.4% of boys and 44.9% of girls perceived themselves as overweight. We found that overweight students reported their body weights lower and their heights higher compared to non-overweight students, resulting in an underestimation of BMI. Based on desired BMI, 79.9% of the girls desired to be underweight and 73.0% of the boys desired to be normal weight. Overweight or normal weight students were less satisfied with their body weights than underweight students. Girls had more weight control experience and concern compared to boys. Overweight girls spent longer times in watching TV compared to non-overweight girls (p < 0.001) and had more overeating behaviors (p < 0.05). Overweight students reported that they ate snacks less frequently than non-overweight students, which may be due to their tendency to report less eating. In conclusion, significant gender differences and weight status differences existed in weight perception, weight satisfaction, and weight control experience and concern. Because perception of overweight is likely to lead to unhealthy eating behaviors and weight control, efforts for adolescents to improve accuracy of weight perceptions and to understand the benefits of being healthier are needed.
The purposes of this study were: 1) to investigate four aspects of high school students' clothing attitudes as compared with their needs and family value orientations. 2) to ascertain whether differences existed between toys and girls on four aspects of clothing attitudes. Needs were measured through The Need Diagnosis Scale (Jaung-Ku Whang: 1965). Family value orientations were measured through The Home Environment Inventory(Won-Sik Jung : 1970). Four aspects of clothing attitudes were assessed by means of Lee; Kahng; Lee; Yang's questionnaires. The questionnaires were administered to a sample of 576 senior high school students(285 boys and 291 girls) in Won-Ju. The data was analyzed by correlations, multiple regression, t-test. The results were as follows : 1) Need for exhibition was positively related to clothing exhibition and fashion interest for both boys and girls, and clothing conformity for boys only. Need for exhibition was negatively related to clothing modesty for boys only. Need for affiliation was positively related to clothing exhibition for both boys and girls, fashion for girls only, and clothing conformity for boys only. 2) Social climber family value orientation was positively related to clothing conformity and clothing modesty for boys only. Materialistic family value orientation was positively related to clothing exhibition. Traditional family value orientation was positively related to clothing modesty for both boys and girls, and negatively related to clothing exhibition. 3) Girls scored significantly higher than boys on attitudes toward fashion and clothing modesty, whereas boys scored significantly higher than girls on attitudes toward clothing conformity.
This study aimed to investigate how child neglect abuse by parents, children's intimacy with teachers and peer attachment influenced boys' and girls' psycho-social maladjustment(aggression, social withdrawal and depression). The subjects were 2,264 elementary school students(boys: 1,180, girls: 1,084) in upper grades participating in the Korea Child Youth Panel Surveys. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, correlations and hierarchical regressions. The main results of this study were as follows. Firstly, regardless of children's sex, as child abuse levels by parents are higher, so children's aggression levels are higher. Also, children's intimacy with teachers and peer attachment moderated the effects of child neglect abuse by parents on both boys' and girls' aggression. But the patters of moderating effects were differed in children's sex. Secondly, child neglect abuse by parents didn't influence boys' and girls' social withdrawal and boys' peer attachment moderated the effects of child neglect by parents on boys' social withdrawal. Finally, child abuse by parents strongly influenced boys' depression, but child neglect by parents strongly influenced girls' depression. Also, there were no moderating effects of children's intimacy with teachers and peer attachment on the relation between child abuse neglect by parents, and boys' and girls' depression.
