Hybrid-Trefftz plate bending elements are known to be robust and free of shear locking in the thin limit because of Internal displacements fields and linked boundary displacements. Also, their finite element approximation is very simple regardless to boundary shape since all element matrices can be calculated using only boundary integrals. In this study, new hybrid-Trefftz variational formulation based on the total potential energy principle of internal displacements and displacement consistency conditions at the boundary is derived. And flat shell elements are derived by combining hybrid-Trefftz bending stiffness and plane stress stiffness with drilling dofs.

Nonlinear numerical analysis was performed to investigate the behavioral characteristics and failure mechanism of flexure -dominated structural walls with partially confined boundary elements. Based on the results, deformability of walls with partially confined boundary elements was evaluated, and a design method which can determine depth of confined boundary element according to given ductility demand, was developed. Also, effective details of laterally confining re-bars were proposed for boundary elements with rectangular cross-section. The design method can be used to choose the spacing of confining re-bars assuring the confining effect and constructability.
In this paper, the approximately coupled method of finite element method and boundary element method to obtain efficient and accurate analysis results is proposed for a two-dimensional elasto-static problem with a geometrically abruptly changing part. As the finite element of a two-dimensional problem, three-node and four-node plane stress element is applied, and as the boundary element of a two-dimensional problem, three-node boundary element is applied. In the modeling stage, firstly, an entire analysis target object is modeled as finite elements, and then a geometrically abruptly changing part is modeled as boundary elements. The boundary element is defined using the nodes defined for modeling finite elements. In the analysis stage, finite element analysis is firstly performed on a entire analysis target object, and boundary element analysis is automatically performed afterwards. As for the boundary conditions at boundary element analysis, displacement conditions and stress conditions, which are the results of finite element analysis, are applied. As a numerical example, the analysis results for a two-dimensional elasto-static problem, a plate with a crack, are presented and investigated.

In this paper, beam finite elements with higher-order derivatives' continuity are formulated and evaluated for various boundary conditions. All the beam elements are based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. These higher-order beam elements are often required to analyze structures by using newly developed higher-order beam theories and/or non-classical beam theories based on nonlocal elasticity. It is however rare to assess the performance of such elements in terms of boundary and loading conditions. To this end, two higher-order beam elements are formulated, in which $C^2$ and $C^3$ continuities of the deflection are enforced, respectively. Three different boundary conditions are then applied to solve beam structures, such as cantilever, simply-support and clamped-hinge conditions. In addition to conventional Euler-Bernoulli beam boundary conditions, the effect of higher-order boundary conditions is investigated. Depending on the boundary conditions, the oscillatory behavior of deflections is observed. Especially the geometric boundary conditions are problematic, which trigger unstable solutions when higher-order deflections are prescribed. It is expected that the results obtained herein serve as a guideline for higher-order derivatives' continuous finite elements.

This paper presents a detailed procedure for a nonlinear soil-structure interaction of a seismically isolated NPP(Nuclear Power Plant) structure using the boundary reaction method (BRM). The BRM offers a two-step method as follows: (1) the calculation of boundary reaction forces in the frequency domain on an interface of linear and nonlinear regions, (2) solving the wave radiation problem subjected to the boundary reaction forces in the time domain. For the purpose of calculating the boundary reaction forces at the base of the isolator, the KIESSI-3D program is employed in this study to solve soil-foundation interaction problem subjected to vertically incident seismic waves. Wave radiation analysis is also employed, in which the nonlinear structure and the linear soil region are modeled by finite elements and energy absorbing elements on the outer model boundary using a general purpose nonlinear FE program. In this study, the MIDAS/Civil program is employed for modeling the wave radiation problem. In order to absorb the outgoing elastic waves to the unbounded soil region, spring and viscous-damper elements are used at the outer FE boundary. The BRM technique utilizing KIESSI-3D and MIDAS/Civil programs is verified using a linear soil-structure analysis problem. Finally the method is applied to nonlinear seismic analysis of a base-isolated NPP structure. The results show that BRM can effectively be applied to nonlinear soil-structure interaction problems.

In two dimensional mechanical design analysis, quadrilateral element mesh is preferred because it provides more accurate result than triangular element mesh. However, automation of quadrilateral element mesh generation is much more complex because of its geometrical complexities. In this study, an automatic quadrilateral element mesh generation algorithm based on the boundary normal offsetting method and the boundary decomposition method is developed. In so doing, nodes are automatically placed using the boundary normal offsetting method and the decomposition method is applied to decompose the designed domain into a set of convex subdomains. The generated elements are improved by relocation of the existing nodes based on the four criteria - uniformity, aspect ratio, skewness and taper degree. The developed algorithm requires minimal user inputs such as boundary data and the distance between nodes.

This paper is concerned with developing a finite element model incorporating boundary damper techniques which is applicable to the prediction of wave agitations in harbors. Based on the linear wave theory, a mild-slope equation is used. In order to consider the wave energy dissipations on solid boundary. the partial reflecting boundary condition is introduced. Radiating boundary condition is modeled by using tile second-order boundary damper developed by Bando et al. (1984). The near field region in harbor is discretized using 8-noded isoparametric elements, the boundary conditions are presented using 3-noded line elements. The numerical model is applied to a fully open rectangular harbor to prove its validity. Numerical experiments are also performed to investigate the effects of the wave reflection coefficients of solid boundary and the types of the dampers.

The long-term behavior, such as in excavation problems of weak medium, can be dealt with by the elasto-viscoplasticity models. In this paper, a combined formulation of elasto-viscoplasticity using boundary elements and finite elements without using internal cells is presented. The domain integral introduced due to the viscoplastic stresses is transformed into a boundary integral applying direct integration in cylindrical coordinates. The results of the developed boundary element analysis are compared with those from the explicit solution and from the finite element analysis. It is observed that the boundary element analysis without internal cells results in some error because of its deficiency in handling the nonlinearity in local stress concentration. Therefore, a coupled analysis of boundary elements and finite elements, in which finite elements are used in the area of stress concentration, is developed. The coupled method is applied to a time dependent inelastic problem with semi-infinite boundaries. It results in reasonable solution compared with other methods where relatively higher degree of freedoms are employed. Thus, it is concluded that the combined analysis may be used for such problems in the effective manner.
We will estimate the lower bound of the first nonzero Neumann and Dirichlet eigenvalue of Laplacian equation on compact Riemannian manifold M with boundary. In case that the boundary of M has positive second fundamental form elements, Ly-Yau[3] gave the lower bound of the first nonzero neumann eigenvalue $\eta_1$. In case that the second fundamental form elements of $\partial$M is bounded below by negative constant, Roger Chen[4] investigated the lower bound of $\eta_1$. In [1], [2], we obtained the lower bound of the first nonzero Neumann eigenvalue is estimated under the condtion that the second fundamental form elements of boundary is bounded below by zero. Moreover, I realize that "the interior rolling $\varepsilon$ - ball condition" is not necessary when the first Dirichlet eigenvalue was estimated in [1].ed in [1].

The boundary/finite element analysis for the seismic wave amplifications due to nonhomogeneous alluvial deposits was performed in this study. For numerical analysis, the homogeneous linear elastic soil half-space was modeled by using the 3-node isoparametric boundary elements and the inhomogeneous alluvial deposit was modeled by using the 8-node isoparametric finite elements. The two elements at interface were coupled together by the equilibrium condition of the tractions and the compatibility condition of the displacements. As a prarmetric variable, the incident angle and the dimensionsless frequency of the SH, P and SV-waves and the shear wave velocity ratio and the mass density ratio between the half-space and the alluvial deposit were selected.
