This paper deals with numerical treatment of singularly perturbed differential equations involving small delays. The highest order derivative in the equation is multiplied by a perturbation parameter 𝜀 taking arbitrary values in the interval (0, 1]. For small 𝜀, the problem involves a boundary layer of width O(𝜀), where the solution changes by a finite value, while its derivative grows unboundedly as 𝜀 tends to zero. The considered problem contains delay on the convection and reaction terms. The terms with the delays are approximated using Taylor series approximations resulting to asymptotically equivalent singularly perturbed BVPs. Inducing exponential fitting factor for the term containing the singular perturbation parameter and using central finite difference for the derivative terms, numerical scheme is developed. The stability and uniform convergence of difference schemes are studied. Using a priori estimates we show the convergence of the scheme in maximum norm. The scheme converges with second order of convergence for the case 𝜀 = O(N-1) and for the case 𝜀 ≪ N-1, the scheme converge uniformly with first order of convergence, where N is number of mesh intervals in the domain discretization. We compare the accuracy of the developed scheme with the results in the literature. It is found that the proposed scheme gives accurate result than the one in the literatures.
Based on the ideas of variational differential quadrature (VDQ) and finite element method (FEM), a numerical approach named as VDQFEM is applied herein to study the large deformations of plate-type structures under static loading with arbitrary shape hole made of functionally graded graphene platelet-reinforced composite (FG-GPLRC) in the context of higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). The material properties of composite are approximated based upon the modified Halpin-Tsai model and rule of mixture. Furthermore, various FG distribution patterns are considered along the thickness direction of plate for GPLs. Using novel vector/matrix relations, the governing equations are derived through a variational approach. The matricized formulation can be efficiently employed in the coding process of numerical methods. In VDQFEM, the space domain of structure is first transformed into a number of finite elements. Then, the VDQ discretization technique is implemented within each element. As the last step, the assemblage procedure is performed to derive the set of governing equations which is solved via the pseudo arc-length continuation algorithm. Also, since HSDT is used herein, the mixed formulation approach is proposed to accommodate the continuity of first-order derivatives on the common boundaries of elements. Rectangular and circular plates under various boundary conditions with circular/rectangular/elliptical cutout are selected to generate the numerical results. In the numerical examples, the effects of geometrical properties and reinforcement with GPL on the nonlinear maximum deflection-transverse load amplitude curve are studied.

The sound radiation responses of multi-layer composite plates subjected to harmonic mechanical excitation in hygrothermal environment is numerically investigated. A homogenized micromechanical finite element (FE) based on the higher-order mid-plane kinematics replicating quadratic function as well as the through the thickness stretching effect together with the indirect boundary element (IBE) scheme has been first time employed. The isoparametric Lagrangian element (ten degrees of freedom per node) is used for discretization to attain the hygro-thermo-elastic natural frequencies and the modes of the plate via Hamilton's principle. The effective material properties under combined hygrothermal loading are considered via a micromechanical model. An IBE method is then implemented to attain structure-surrounding coupling and the Helmholtz wave equation is solved to compute the sound radiation responses. The effectiveness of the model is tested by converging it with the similar analytical/numerical results as well as the experimentally acquired data. The present scheme is further hold out for solving diverse numerical illustrations. The results revealed the relevance of the current higher-order FE-IBE micromechanical model in realistic estimation of hygro-thermo-acoustic responses. The geometrical parameters, volume fraction of fiber, layup, and support conditions alongside the hygrothermal load is found to have significant influence on the vibroacoustic characteristics.

A level set based topological shape optimization method for nonlinear structure considering hyper-elastic problems is developed. To relieve significant convergence difficulty in topology optimization of nonlinear structure due to inaccurate tangent stiffness which comes from material penalization of whole domain, explicit boundary for exact tangent stiffness is used by taking advantage of level set function for arbitrary boundary shape. For given arbitrary boundary which is represented by level set function, a Delaunay triangulation scheme is used for current structure discretization instead of using implicit fixed grid. The required velocity field in the actual domain to update the level set equation is determined from the descent direction of Lagrangian derived from optimality conditions. The velocity field outside the actual domain is determined through a velocity extension scheme based on the method suggested by Adalsteinsson and Sethian(1999). The topological derivatives are incorporated into the level set based framework to enable to create holes whenever and wherever necessary during the optimization.

This paper describes a potential-based panel method formulated for the analysis of a super-cavitating two-dimensional hydrofoil. The method employs normal dipoles and sources distributed on the foil and cavity surfaces to represent the potential flow around the cavitating hydrofoil. The kinematic boundary condition on the wetted portion of the foil surface is satisfied by requiring that the total potential vanish in the fictitious inner flow region of the foil, and the dynamic boundary condition on the cavity surface is satisfied by requiring thats the potential vary linearly, i.e., the tangential velocity be constant. Green's theorem then results in a potential-based integral equation rather than the usual velocity-based formulation of Hess & Smith type. With the singularities distributed on the exact hydrofoil surface, the pressure distributions are predicted with improved accuracy compared to those of the linearized lilting surface theory, especially near the leading edge. The theory then predicts the cavity shape and cavitation number for an assumed cavity length. To improve the accuracy, the sources and dipoles on the cavity surface are moved to the newly computed cavity surface, where the boundary conditions are satisfied again. This iteration process is repeated until the results are converged. Characteristics of iteration and discretization of the present numerical method are much faster and more stable than the existing nonlinear theories. The theory shows good correlations with the existing theories and experimental results for the super-cavitating flow. In the region of small angles of attack, the present prediction shows and excellent comparison with the Geurst's linear theory. For the long cavity, the method recovers the trends of the Wu's nonlinear theory. In the intermediate regions of the short super-cavitation, the method compares very well with the experimental results of Parkin and also those of Silberman.

A Meshfree is a method used to establish algebraic equations of system for the whole problem domain without the use of a predefined mesh for the domain discretization. A point interpolation method is based on combining radial and polynomial basis functions. Involvement of radial basis functions overcomes possible singularity Furthermore, the interpolation function passes through all scattered points in an influence domain and thus shape functions are of delta function property. This makes the implementation of essential boundary conditions much easier than the meshfree methods based on the moving least-squares approximation. This study aims to investigate a stress analysis of structural element between a meshfree method and the finite element method. Examples on cantilever type plate, hollow cylinder and stress concentration problems show that the accuracy and convergence rate of the meshfree methods are high.

Detailed flow of a shrouded tail rotor in hover is studied by using a compressible inviscid flow solver on unstructured meshes. The numerical method is based on a cell-centered finite-volume discretization and an implicit Gauss-Seidel time integration. Numerical simulation is made for a single blade attached to the center body and guide by the duct by imposing a periodic boundary condition between adjacent rotor blades. The results show that the performance of an isolated rotor without shroud compares well with experiment. In case of a shrouded rotor, correction of the collective pitch angle is made such that the overall performance matches with experiment to account for the uncertainties of the experimental model configuration. Details of the flow field compare well with the experiment confirming the validity of the present method.

Modeling water flow in variably saturated, porous media is important in many branches of science and engineering. Highly nonlinear relationships between water content and hydraulic conductivity and soil-water pressure result in very steep wetting fronts causing numerical problems. These include poor efficiency when modeling water infiltration into very dry porous media, and numerical oscillation near a steep wetting front. A one-dimensional finite element formulation is developed for the numerical simulation of variably saturated flow systems. First order backward Euler implicit and second order Crank-Nicolson time discretization schemes are adopted as a solution strategy in this formulation based on Picard and Newton iterative techniques. Five examples are used to investigate the numerical performance of two approaches and the different factors are highlighted that can affect their convergence and efficiency. The first test case deals with sharp moisture front that infiltrates into the soil column. It shows the capability of providing a mass-conservative behavior. Saturated conditions are not developed in the second test case. Involving of dry initial condition and steep wetting front are the main numerical complexity of the third test example. Fourth test case is a rapid infiltration of water from the surface, followed by a period of redistribution of the water due to the dynamic boundary condition. The last one-dimensional test case involves flow into a layered soil with variable initial conditions. The numerical results indicate that the Crank-Nicolson scheme is inefficient compared to fully implicit backward Euler scheme for the layered soil problem but offers same accuracy for the other homogeneous soil cases.
Experimental study of sedimentation and self-weight consolidation has been primary research area in dredged soil. However, good quality of the dredged soil and minimum water pollution caused by the pumping of reclaimed soil require intensive study of the flow characteristics of dredged material due to dumping. In this study, continuity and the equilibrium equations for mass flow assuming single phase was derived to simulate mass flow in dredged containment area. To optimize computation and modeling time for three dimensional geometry and boundary conditions, depth integration is applied to governing equations to consider three dimensional topography of the site. Petrov-Galerkin formulation is applied in spatial discretization of governing equations. Generalized trapezoidal rule is used for time integration, and Newton iteration process approximated the solution. DG and CDG technique were used for weighting matrix in discontinuous test function in dredged flow analysis, and numerical stability was evaluated by performed a square slump simulation. A comparative analysis for numerical methods showed that DG method applied to SU / PG formulation gives minimal pseudo oscillation and reliable numerical results.

In this study, a Cartesian-grid method based on finite volume approach is applied to simulate the ship motions in large amplitude waves. Fractional step method is applied for pressure-velocity coupling and TVD limiter is used to interpolate the cell face value for the discretization of convective term. Water, air, and solid phases are identified by using the concept of volume-fraction function for each phase. In order to capture the interface between air and water, the tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing (THINC) scheme is used with weighed line interface calculation (WLIC) method which considers multidimensional information. The volume fraction of solid body embedded in the Cartesian grid system is calculated using a level-set based algorithm, and the body boundary condition is imposed by a volume weighted formula. Numerical simulations for the two-dimensional barge type model and Wigley hull in linear waves have been carried out to validate the newly developed code. To demonstrate the applicability for highly nonlinear wave-body interactions such as green water on the deck, numerical analysis on the large-amplitude motion of S175 containership is conducted and all computational results are compared with experimental data.
