  • This study is a descriptive analysis of Korean business names listed on KOSDAQ (Korea Securities Dealers Automated Quotation) from a morphological perspective. A total of 1,358 business names on KOSDAQ are collected and analyzed in terms of origins and morphological structure. The analysis exhibits the monopoly of English: only 20% of the names are composed of only Korean elements, including Sino-Chinese, while 76% of them contain some form of English elements. It is pointed out that those English elements are not borrowed from English but are created in Korea and participate further word formation processes. In terms of word formation methods, compounding and shortening are most common, taking up 90% of all names. Multiple derived forms are used from an identical origin word, and even bound forms in English are taken and used as independent words, regardless of their original status in English. It is argued that Korean English is not entirely negative and should be considered as part of World Englishes.

  • The purpose of this article is to argue that Korean music, Yukjabaegi (six-bit songs), helps us overcome grief. It is not untrue to say that Yukjabaegi is among the greatest types of music in Korea. This is a testament to the prominence of this statue among Han Ak (Korean music, 韓樂). Empathy is an inherent human quality involving all parts of the brain which is also linked to feelings of love. Empathy is created the moment we imagine ourselves in someone else's situation. Moreover, if empathy is good for us, the generation of empathy may actually mobilize our strength. Koreans have superior strength in overcoming grief and difficult situations by singing together. Often Koreans feel that their lives and labors are difficult, they start singing Yukjabaegi because they consider grief and anxiety wear on a person more than hard work. Listening to and singing Yukjabaegi can cheer up people who feel as limp as a rag after hard labor. Tackling reality and venting the experience via creative expression is bound to be healthy. Under a change of the rhythm pattern, Yukjabaegi thus becomes a major form of amusement for those suffering from difficult situations and comes as a true friend to share in our grief with us. Singing together via Yukjabaegi is a time to share grief. Thus, this, author believes that it is related to empathy. It helps us overcome grief by means of music therapy.

  • Chitin synthases are identified as key enzymes of chitin biosynthesis in most of the fungi. Among them, chitin synthase II has been reported to be and essential enzyme in chitin biosynthesis, and exists as a membrane-bound form. To search and screen new antifungal agents from natural resources to inhibit chitin synthase II, the assay conditions were established using the enzyme isolated from Saccharomyces cerevisiae ECY38-38A(pAS6) that overproduces only chitin synthase II. This enzyme was activated only by partial proteolysis with trypsin. Its actibity reached the maximum at $80{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/ml$ of trypsin and was strongly stimulated by 2.0 mM $Co^{2+}$, 1.0 nM UDP-[$^{14}C$]-GicNAc, and 32 mM free-GlcNAc. Under these assay conditions, the highest chitin synthase II activity was observed by incubation at $30^{\circ}C$ for 90 min. However, and extremely narrow range of organic solvents up to as much as 25% of DMSO and 25% of MeOH was useful for determining optimal assay conditions. After a search or potent inhibitors of chitin synthase II from natural resources, prodigiosin was isolated from Serratia marcescens and purified by solvent extration and silica gel column chromatographies. The structure of prodigiosin was determined by UV, IR, Mass spectral, and NMR spectral analyses. Its molecular weight and formula were found to be 323 and $C_{20}H_{25}N_{3}O$, respectively. Prodigiosin ingibited chitin synthase II by 50% at the concentration of $115{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/ml$.

  • A DNA fragment from an alkali-tolerent Bacillus sp., conferring strong promoter activity, was subcloned into the promoter probe plasmid pPL703 and the nucleotide sequence of this promoter region was determined. The sequence analysis suggested that this highly efficient promoter region containing the complex clustered promoters comprised three kinds of promoters (P1, P2 and P3), which are transcribed by $\sigma^B (formerly \sigma^{37}), \sigma^E(formerly \sigma^{29}) and \sigma^A (formerly \sigma^{43})$ RNA polymerase holoenzymes which play major rules at the onset of endospore formation, during sporulation and at the vegetative phase of growth, respectively. S1 nuclease mapping experiments showed that all three promoters had staggered transcription initiation points. The results of chloramphenicol acetyltransferase assay after the subcloning experiments also indicated that the expression of these clustered promoters was correlated with the programs of growth and endospore development. Promoter P1, P2 and P3 were preceded by 75% AT, 79% AT and 81% AT regions, respectively, and a partial deletion of AT-rich region prevented transcription from promoter P1 in vivo. Two sets of 5 -AGTGTT-3 sequences and inverted repeat sequences located around the promoter P1 were speculated as the possible cis acting sites for the catabolite repression in B. subtilis. In vivo transcripts from these sequence regions may be able to form a secondary structure, however, the possibility that a regulatory protein induced by the excess amount of glucose could be bound to such a domain for crucial action remains to be determined.

  • Axin is a scaffold protein of the APC/axin/GSK complex, binding to all of the other signalling components. Axin interacts with Glycogen synthase kinase 3$\beta$ (GSK 3$\beta$) and functions as a negative regulator of Wnt signalling pathways. To determine the solution structure of the GSK3$\beta$ binding regions of the axin, we initiated NMR study of axin fragment comprising residues 3$Val^{388} - Arg^{401}$using circular dichroism (CD) and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy. The CD spectra of 3$axin^{pep}$ in the presence of 30% TFE displayed a standard 3$\alpha$-helical conformation, exhibiting the bound structure of 3$axin^{pep}$ to GSK3$\bata$. On the basis of experimental restraints including $NOE_s$, and $^3J_{HN\alpha} $ coupling constants, the solution conformation of $axin^{pep}$ was determined with program CNS. The 20 lowest energy structures were selected out of 50 final simulated-annealing structures in both water and TFE environment, respectively. The $RMSD_s$ for the 20 structures in TFE solution were 0.086 nm for backbone atoms and 0.195 nm for all heavy atoms, respectively. The Ramachandran plot indicates that the $\varphi$, $\psi$ angles of the 20 final structures is properly distributed in energetically acceptable regions. $Axin^pep$ in aqueous solutions consists of a stable $\alpha$-helix spanning residues form $Glu^{391}$ to $Val^{391} $, which is an interacting motif with GSK3$\beta$.

  • As concentration of ADP was increased, the rate of phosphocreatine formation by respiring heart mitochondria was increased. The value of apparent Km of the phosphocreatine-forming mitochondria for ADP was estimated to be 0.0185 mM. This value was much lower than that of Km for ATP (0.31 mM) which was determined from the reaction of the soluble form of mitochondrial creatine kinase. The concentration of ATP remained constant during the respiring in the presence of ADP. The rate of accumulation of oxidative-phosphorylated ATP in the mitochondrial respiration medium was continuously monitored as a function of ADP concentration with the firefly luciferase-coupled assay. In that case, exogenous creatine did not affect the rate of accumulation of ATP, indicating that phosphocreatine-forming (i.e.,respiring) mitochondria in the presence of ADP did not use the ATP in the medium as a substrate. These results suggest that the heart mitochondrial creatine kinase bound to the inner membrane functionally tight-coupled to the oxidative phosphorylating system with respect to the respired ATP.

  • Commassie blue G250 produced metachromatic effect with some solvents. The absorptivity and molar absorptivity of the dye in ethanol were 82.4 and $70.4{\times}10^3$ at maximum absorption wavelength 610nm, respectively. The dye had a red from$({\lambda}_m=465nm)$ in ethanol-phosphoric acid-water solution and converted to a blue form$({\lambda}_m=590nm)$ after binding to protein. Absorbance at 590nm gave linear responses with respect to protein contents. The dye-binding capacities of proteins varied considerably with the content and source of proteins. Under the experimental condition the dye-binding capacities of bovine serum albumin, cytochrome C and ${\gamma}-globulin$ were 110, 103, and $88{\mu}g$ commassie blue G250 bound per $100{\mu}g$ protein, respectively.

  • In the presence of metal ions(Co(Ⅱ), Ni(Ⅱ), Sr(Ⅱ), Cu(Ⅱ), Fe(Ⅲ), U(Ⅵ)), the sedimentation of humic acid was increased at constant pH with increasing metal concentration and the strength was increased in the following order: Sr < Ni < Co < Cu < Fe < U. At constant metal concentration, Cu(Ⅱ), Ni(Ⅱ), and Co(Ⅱ) ions caused an increase in sedimentation of humic acid as the solution pH increased, whereas Fe(Ⅲ) and U(Ⅵ) ions caused a decrease. Sr(Ⅱ) ions did not affect the sedimentation even with the variation of pH. The analysis of FT-IR spectra for the sediments prepared from the reaction between humic acid and metal ions showed that metal ions were bound to humic acid to form complexes, suggesting that the metal complexation plays an important role in the sedimentation of humic acid.

  • The accuracy of instantaneous passive emitter localization varies with sensing platforms and measurable parameters. Appropriate combination of instantaneous measurable parameters have more accurate localization performance than a single parameter based localization in general. Emitter localization is preferred to use a small number of receivers as possible for the efficiency of strategic management in the field of modern electronic warfare support. For this reason, we compare CRLB (Cramer-Rao lower bound) of two moving platform with various measurable parameters to search a appropriate choice of parameters for the better localization performance through the x-y axis CEP (circular error probable) derived form CLRB. In addition, we present the relation of the localization performance and accuracy of measurable parameters.

  • Three possible binding modes of cationic meso-tetrakis(N-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrin (TMPyP) to d[(GCATATATGC)2] duplex were investigated by the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Among the three binding modes namely, “along the groove”, “across the groove” and “face on the groove”, the “across the groove” model exhibited the largest negative binding free energy and the DNA backbone remained as the B form. In this model, the molecular plain of the TMPyP tilts 45o with respect to the DNA helix axis and is largely exposed to the solvent. TMPyP was stabilized mainly by the interaction between the positively charged neighboring pyridinium moieties of TMPyP and negatively charged phosphate groups of DNA. The result obtained in this work by MD and the report (Jin, B. et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2005, 127, 2417.) that the spectral properties of poly[d(A-T)2] bound TMPyP in the presence and absence of the minor groove binding drug 4',6- diamidino-2-phenylindole are similar, we propose that TMPyP bind across the minor groove of the AT rich- DNA.
