  • The study uses agricultural knowledge system theory to explore how traditional knowledge applies to the linkage system of agricultural research and extension in rural Korea. By agricultural knowledge system we emphasize the dynamic networks of actors, processes of negotiation, and the diverse ways in which knowledge is constructed and performed. The knowledge systems reflect the idea that the boundaries between knowledge groups are not closed and that there could be considerable overlap between knowledge system. The results of this study are the following : First, we should know that some extension agents clearly value farmer knowledge and try to facilitate farmer-to-farmer communication. Extension plays a significant role in the knowledge-creation process and shaping communities because knowledge processes are embedded in social processes that involve aspects of power, authority, and legitimization. Third, the constructions of agricultural knowledge systems thus include social interactions, communication, and the diverse processes individuals employ create, use, and evaluate multiple types and sources of information through the linkage between agricultural colleges and Rural Development Administration (RDA), establishing the research institution of research and extension linkage, exchange research agent with extension agent, and bottom-up approach. Second, we should know that the focus of traditional knowledge development is rural community development as a community process. Nowadays the sessions of the Intergovernmental Committee of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) cover two lines of inquiry, which are the use of existing standards of intellectual property for the protection of traditional knowledge and that of new legal standards, eventually in the from of sui generis mechanisms of protection.

  • The development of hybrid systems comprising nanoparticles and polymers is an opening pathway for engineering nanocomposites exhibiting outstanding mechanical, optical, electrical, and magnetic properties. Among inorganic counterpart, iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP) exhibit high magnetization, controllable surface chemistry, spintronic properties, and biological compatibility. These characteristics enable them as a platform for biomedical applications and building blocks for bottom-up approaches, such as the layer-by-layer (LbL). In this regard, the present study is addressed to investigate IONP synthesised through co-precipitation route (average diameter around 7 nm), with either positive or negative surface charges, LbL assembled with sodium sulfonated polystyrene (PSS) or polyaniline (PANI). The surface and internal morphologies, and electrochemical properties of these nanocomposites were probed with atomic force microscopy, UV-vis and Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, and electrochemical measurements. The nanocomposites display a globular morphology with IONP densely packed while surface dressed by polyelectrolytes. The investigation of the effect of thermal annealing (300 up to $600^{\circ}C$) on the oxidation process of IONP assembled with PSS was performed using Raman spectroscopy. Our findings showed that PSS protects IONP from oxidation/phase transformation to hematite up to $400^{\circ}C$. The electrochemical performance of nanocomposite comprising IONP and PANI were investigated in $0.5mol{\times}L^{-1}$ $Na_2SO_4$ electrolyte solution by cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry. Our findings indicate this structure as promising candidate for potential application as electrodes for supercapacitors.

  • The purpose of this study is to produce slacks pattern for pregnant women in the mid or second half period of their pregnancy according to the development figure of the body shell from a follow-up measurement. We here would like to produce slacks pattern for pregnant women constructed to fit better with their individual property in their figure and to help maintain the shape and beauty of the lower half of body and would compare it with two manufactured slacks pattern. The results of the study were as follows; 1. As the pregnancy proceeds, the height of natural-waist line went up spontaneously due to the projection of abdominal region, therefore, it was given darts at the front zipper part so that they could maintain a nice figure and to avoid possibility of feeling oppressed. To acquire a slimmer outfit, we made of the slacks-bottom narrower than the width at the knee line, and it worked out. 2. Sensory evaluation for appearance: According to the statistical of the result of 19items on the questionaire, all items showed significant difference(a$\leq$0.01) between the new and A(bunka) B(Kim's pattern) method slacks pattern, with the new pattern having higher scores. The new drafting method proved to be better fitted, to fit the shape of bodies properly and to get a visual effect to look slim.

  • Recently, attention has been drawn to the issue of local community revitalization. In the U.S., CDC(Community Development Corporation) has become a main vehicle for revitalizing dilapidated inner-city communities. Using the case of Philadelphia in the U.S., this paper investigates the way in which local community revitalization or downtown revitalization can be successfully achieved through the formation of social capital and public-private partnership. Futhermore, exploring the cases of West Philadelphia CDC and University City, this paper seeks to provide insight into the dynamics of successful community development. In order to examine the dynamics, this paper focuses on local governance in terms of both the reciprocal partnerships and the close networking among participating agents. The implications of the case studies of this research for the Korean context would be that the bottom-up approach starting from the local-scale community revitalization and local governance is very crucial and indispensable for the sustainable regional or national development.

  • Due to its high salt content and poor physical properties in reclaimed tidal lands, it is important to ameliorate soil physical properties to improve the efficiency of desalination. The objective of this study was to evaluate the changes of soil properties at Saemangeum reclaimed tidal saline soil with various soil amendments. Field experiment was conducted at Saemangeum reclaimed tidal land in Korea and the dominant soil series was Munpo series (coarse loamy, mixed, nonacid, Mesic, Typic, Fluvaquents). Woodchips, crushed-stone, oyster shell, coal bottom ash, and rice hull were added as soil amendments and mixed into surface soil to improve soil physical properties. There was large variability in soil hardness, but oyster shell treatment was significantly lower soil hardness at surface layer. Soil hardness was not significantly different below 15 cm depth. Infiltration rate was also significantly greater at oyster shell treatment. This may be due to the leaching of Ca ions from oyster shell and improved soil properties. However, there was no statistical significant difference of the soil bulk density, moisture content, and porosity. Improved physical properties increased desalinization rate in soil and retarded the resalinization rate when evapotranspiration rate was high. Although soil salinity was significantly decreased with oyster shell amendment, soil pH was increased that should be made up as a soil amendment. Our results indicated that oyster shell application increased infiltration rate and improved soil hardness, and thus oyster shell could be used to improve soil salinity level at Saemangeum reclaimed tidal saline soil.

  • This study aims to explore the present and future of agricultural extension system in Uganda. Though Uganda has used many approaches in its agricultural extension, very little has been registered in farm productivity and profitability. Too many reforms some of them some are top-down while others are bottom - up. In most cases these reforms may not be given a chance to develop to show their impact. Future success of agricultural extension and rural development efforts in Uganda will depend not only on the presence of technical expertise and availability of resources but also on each government's willingness to redefine the role of its institutions and to allow the active participation of rural people in formulating and implementing and agricultural extension and rural development programs. As result the public extension systems in Uganda needs to be demand-driven so to make it relevant and important to the beneficiary.

  • The difference of mooring tension by type of buoy was investigated in the circulating water channel and the wave tank for deducting the most stable buoy from the current and the wave condition. 5 types of buoy made up of short cylinder laid vertically (CL-V), short cylinder laid horizontally (CL-H), capsule (CS), sphere (SP) and long cylinder (CL-L) were used for experiments. A mooring line and a weight were connected with each buoy. A tensile gauge was installed between a mooring line and a weight. All buoy's mooring tension was measured at the same time for the wave test with periods of 1.5~3.0 sec and wave heights of 0.1~0.3 m, and the current test with flow speeds of 0.2~1.0 m/sec. As a result, the order of tension value in the wave test was CL-H > CL-V > SP > CS > CL-L. In the current test CL-V and CL-H were recorded in the largest tension value, whereas SP has the smallest tension value. So it seems that SP buoy is the most effective in the location affected by fast current. CS is predicted to be suitable for a location that influence of wave is important more than that of current if practical use in the field is considered. And it was found that the difference of mooring tension among buoys in wave is related to the product of the cross sectional area and the drag coefficient for the buoy's bottom side in high wave height. The factor for the current condition was not found. But it was supposed to be related to complex factors like a dimension and a shape by buoy's posture to flow.

  • In December of 1989 and 1990, matured adults of chum salmon were collected from Namdae-chun River in Yangyang-gun, Kangwon-do, Korea. Artificial insemination was made at captured locations. The fertilized eggs were hatched in trough incubators and the larvae were reared in laboratories of the Yangyang Fisheries Institute and the Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute. The fertilized eggs of this species were demersal and separated, and red in color with mean diameter of 7.2mm. The hatching took place from 480 to 531 degree($^{\circ}C$) days after fertilization. The newly hatched alevins were 1.80 to 2.56cm in total length with big yolk and lied on the bottom. In 35 days after hatching, the alevin attained $3.56{\pm}0.12cm$ in total length, and absorbed the yolk completely to become fry with 7 to 11 parr marks on the body. In 3 months after hatching, and the fries became smolt with silvery scales haring 5.67-6.53cm in total length. The early larval developments of chum salmon could be divided into three stages according to the changes in body shapes and length : larval stage before swim up, swim up stage and smolt stage. The growth of snout, trunk and body height to total length were faster than other body parts in swim up stage.
