The Saemangeum project is one of the biggest reclamation efforts in Korea and may cause coastal ecosystem change due to altered environments and habitat loss. Since February 2002, benthic environment and community structure in the Saemangeum studied area were studied to assess the influence of the project on macrofaunal community. The result of seasonal study from February, 2002 to August 2005 is reported here. Overall, changes of species numbers and dominant species of benthic animals in the periods before (1988) and after $(2002{\sim}2005)$ the Saemangeum dike construction were not evident both inside and outside the dike. However, local environmental and community change were noted The partial completion of Saemangeum dike $(4^{th}\;dike)$ in June 2003 altered water circulation and sediment deposition patterns both inside and outside the dike. Fine sediment was accumulated inside and outside the $4^{th}$ dike while coarse sediment dominated near the main channel (Sinsi gate). Benthic community resl)ended to the altered sediment type in these areas. Species number and diversity in both site was low compared to other sites. The dominant species in these areas were composed of the benthos that had not commonly occurred in the Saemangeum subtidal area.

The changes of sea bottom configuration, which may cause the coastal disasters, have been considered as social problems. It is obvious that the beach deformation is attributable to the sediment transport associated with erosion and acceration. The prediction method and countermeasures for them, however, are not on the level of satisfaction, which indicates that efforts should be made on developing them. In this study, it is found at the groin constructed in Sangju beach on e purpose of beach protection did the aversive function. The reason for this was judged that they accelerated the speed of erosion by increasing the velocity wave-induced current rather than brought storage effect of sediment. Authors found that the storage sediment estimation model by Sonu and Beek(1971) is a useful model at the Sangju beach with the use of topographical survey data from July, 1987 to March, 2003.

Dam construction in a river can change its hydrological pattern and trap sediments, which results in ecological changes in the downstream. It is a common phenomenon in the downstream of dams to have decreased sediment flow and increased periphyton. Artificial floods and sediment application are suggested as mitigation practices in order to simulate natural process of flood; transporting sediment and sloughing periphyton off. In this study the effects of artificial floods on periphyton were examined by applying sand artificially and discharging water from a dam (Yangyang Dam, Korea). The study area has been suffering from turbidity problems caused by shore erosion of the dam. The accumulation of inorganic sediments and increase of periphyton on the river bottom are the major factors of habitat deterioration in the downstream reaches. Artificial flood and artificial addition of sand was performed in summer and the effects were measured. Piles of applied sands were washed off easily by discharge and it enhanced the periphyton sloughing effect. The removal efficiency of periphyton was 50 ~ 80% within the 2 km reach from the dam. In conclusion artificial floods and sand application can be a good mitigation measure for the habitat rehabilitation after a dam construction in streams.
Chemical forms and release potential of heavy metals were studied in the lime treated sediment of lake Chungcho. Chemical forms of heavy metals were analyzed using a sequential extraction method, and release potential of heavy metals was evaluated by the ratio of the content of labile forms to total metal one. Dominant form of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in the untreated sediments was organic/sulfidic form that is stable in the reducing environment such as the bottom of Lake Chungcho. With liming of the sediment, the chemical forms of studied metals were greatly changed from organic/sulfidic form to adsorbed and reducible form, especially Cd and Cu to adsorbed and reducible form, but Pb and Zn to reducible form. It is believed that increase of unstable form of heavy metals in the sediments by liming was caused by the increase of pH of the pore water at the expense of organic/sulfidic form. Thus, we concluded that the liming approach currently used in the treatment of dredged sediments might cause the increase of labile form which is easily dissolved, and may increase the release of metals from the sediment into overlying water.

We conducted a field survey of the generation and development of the delta area of the Nakdong River estuary, Korea. To examine deposition and erosion of the barrier islands, we observed the spatiotemporal variations of sediment transport and quantitatively estimated the settling velocity of coastal sediment. For the field survey, we established two survey sites off the coasts of Jinu Island and Doyodeung, which had shown rapid variations in deposition and erosion. At these sites, we measured the net surface elevation change of the bottom level at approximately 1-month intervals. Main findings were summarized as follows. (1) Calculated daily deposition and erosion velocity during the observation period ranged from -1.39 to 3.56cm/day at Jinu Island and from -4.0 to 3.07cm/day at Doyodeung, respectively. (2) Although two typhoons passed by the study area during the observation period, the maximum net surface elevation was larger in October than during the passage of those typhoons.

A numerical method based on genetic algorithms was introduced to characterize the grain-size distribution more effectively. This technique was proved significant particularly for multimodal size distributions, as was verified for samples from Korea Strait continental shelf. Sediment samples collected from the Korea Strait continental shelf revealed that $96\%$ of the grain-size distributions were multimodal. Therefore, the use of grain-size parameters was not the ideal method. As an alternative method, the decomposition of sue curves into elementary normal component curves was used. Means and standard deviations of 593 decomposed normal components were calculated by a numerical method from 268 size curves of Korea Strait sediments. The mean values of decomposed normal components showed peaks at $1\~3\phi\;and\;7\~9\phi$ size classes. The plot of mean and standard deviation values of the coarse fraction normal components on the map showed a characteristic areal distribution. The characteristic distribution was found to derive from underlying Pleistocene sediment on the basis of sea bottom geologic distribution of the area. The method of decomposition into normal components was found to be more effective than the analysis using traditional grain-size parameters in investigation of multimodal size distribution of Korea Strait shelf sediment.

In this research potential liquation of contaminants from surrounding soil to a reservoir in an island was studied to investigate the cause and route of contamination of Baengyeong-myeon reservoir. Soil of Baengyeong-myeon reservoir consists of $SiO_2$ and has a high iron content because of geological characteristics of its country rock. From the field investigation and simulation study it was found that highly accumulated carbon content in the reservoir sediment was incurred from ground water, which provides a good habitat for microbes. And the liquation, the cause of organics growth, occurs mainly on the bottom of the reservoir consisting marine clay layer once used as farmland. So dredging of the sediment of reservoir and replacing with valley soil is suggested to prevent continuous contamination of a reservoir in an island due to COD production.
Geoacoustic modeling is used to predict sound transmission through submarine bottom layers of sedimentary strata and acoustic basement. This study reconstructed four geoacoustic models for sediments of 50 m thick at the Jeongdongjin area in the western continental margin of the East Sea. Bottom models were based on the data of the highresolution air-gun seismic and subbottom profiles (SBP) with sediment cores. P-wave speed was measured by the pulse transmission technique, and the resonance frequency of piezoelectric transducers was maintained at 1MHz. Measurements of 42 P-wave speeds and 41 attenuations were fulfilled in three core sediments. For actual modeling, the P-wave speeds of the models were compensated to in situ depth below the sea floor using the Hamilton method. These geoacoustic models of coastal bottom strata will be used for geoacoustic and underwater acoustic experiments reflecting vertical and lateral variability of geoacoustic properties in the Jeongdongjin area of the East Sea.
This study was carried out to clarify the spatial and temporal patterns of benthic environments and macrobenthos on the subtidal soft-bottom in Chonsu Bay. Seasonal surface water temperature was similar to the bottom layer, but freshwater discharges into the outlets dereased the surface salinity around the dyke in summer. Bottom dissolved oxygen was decreased deeply around the dyke and created the de-oxygenated layer during summer. Sediment grain size was consisted of finer at the neighboring of the dyke than the mouth of the bay. Organic matters including the sediment were decreased at the mouth of the bay. A total of 311 species ($769\;ind./m^2$) were identified. Polychaetes were the most abundant faunal group in the number of species and densities. The number of species revealed the spatial patterns that it was higher in the mouth of the bay, and their densities showed seasonal changes by mass recruitment occurred at the most of the area in summer, At this time, opportunistic species, Lumbrineris iongifolia and Theora fragilis, were also recruited massively. Chonsu Bay were classified into five station groups by the cluster analysis. The dominant species around the dyke were composed to opportunistic species, those in middle area were Sternaspis scutata, Paraplionospio pinnata, and those in the mouth of the bay were Mediomastus californiensis, Nephtys polybranchia. Seasonal fluctuations and spatial difference of environments seem to have influenced to the species compositions and affected to the stability of benthic ecosystems spatial-temporally In Chonsu nay.
Fine sediment loadings from agricultural watersheds have led to habitat degradation in Lake Takkobu, northern Japan. Fifteen lake sediment core samples were obtained and analyzed to develop a chronology using physical sediment characters, $^{137}Cs$, and tephra. The reconstructed sedimentation rates over the past ca 300 years suggested that sedimentation rates increased drastically after land use development. With a natural sedimentation rate of 0.1-1.1 mm $year^{-1}$ until 1898, lake sedimentation accelerated to 0.6-12.8 mm $year^{-1}$ after 1898. The sedimentation rates after land use change, such as forestry, river engineering works, and agricultural development, were about 6-12 times higher than that under natural conditions, leading to accelerated lake shallowing over the last ca 100 years. Sedimentation rates between 1898 and 1963 differed with location in the lake because of spatial variation in the sediment flux from the contributing rivers and their watersheds. The sedimentation rate in the southern zone between 1898 and 1963 was significantly higher than that in the middle and northern zones, reflecting active sediment production associated with forestry for charcoal production and canal construction for transportation in the southern watersheds and wetlands. The sedimentation rate after 1963 did not vary among the three zones, because decreasing sedimentation was found in most of the southern sites whereas an increasing trend was observed in the middle and northern sites. This result can be explained by shallowing of lake-bottom morphology with sedimentation and the resultant reduction of sediment retention capacity in the southern zone. Moreover, the sedimentation rate at sampling sites close to river mouths increased by 5-32 times compared with natural rates before 1898. The Kushiro River, into which Lake Takkobu drains under regular flow conditions, further contributed to an increased sedimentation rate, because water from the Kushiro River flows back into Lake Takkobu during floods.
