  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of the boron supplementation on lipid profiles and antioxidant capacities in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Rats were divided into 3 groups and fed diet with intake levels of boron (0.5 ppm,50 ppm,100 ppm) for 4 weeks. The half of rats in each group was ovariectomized and the others were sham-operated. And rats were fed same diets for 8 weeks after operation. Feed intake and weight gain were significantly increased by increasing boron intake and higher in OVX group than those in sham-operated. FER was significantly higher in OVX group than that of sham-operated. There were no significant differences in serum lipid profiles among the groups. The contents of hepatic total lipid were significantly higher in OVX group than those of sham-operated and the lowest in high-boron group. Hepatic GST activity was significantly decreased by ovariectomy and the lowest in very high-boron group. Hepatic catalase activity was the lowest in high-boron group of OVX. Hepatic TBARS level of high-boron group was the lowest in sham-operated groups. Hepatic TBARS level induced by AAPH was significantly decreased by increasement of boron supplementation. Taken together, this results suggest that the boron supplementation have the potential role for improving lipid profiles and antioxidant capacities in OVX rats.

  • Boric acid is used as a coolant for pressurized-water reactors, and the degree of burnup is controlled by the concentration of boric acid. Therefore, accurate measurement of the concentration of boric acid is an important factor in reactor safety. An improved system was proposed for the accurate determination of boron concentration. A new boron-concentration measurement technique, called multisensitive detection, was developed to improve the measurement accuracy of boron meters. In previous studies, laboratory-scale experiments were performed based on different sensitivity detectors, confirming a 65% better accuracy than conventional single-detector boron meters. Based on these experimental results, an experimental system simulating the coolant-circulation environment in the reactor was constructed; accuracy analysis of the boron meter with a multisensitivity detector was performed at the actual coolant pressure and temperature. In this study, the boron concentration conversion equation was derived from the calibration test, and the accuracy of the boron concentration conversion equation was examined through a repeatability test. Through the experiment, it was confirmed that the accuracy was up to 87.5% higher than the conventional single-detector boron meter.

  • We have studied the structural characterization, surface morphology and electrical properties for boron dopped polyacene anode material from phenolic resin for lithium secondary battery. The boron dopped anode material were characterized as boron contents of 5, 10, 15 and 20%, respectively. From the X-ray results, the all kinds of compounds were observed for the diffraction patterns for typical amorphous carbons. The SEM morphology showed formation of semi spherical granule for the boron dopped compounds. As the result of the electrical charge/discharge and impedance data, the 10 and 15% boron dopped materials showed good properties on the ions and electron transfer effect of battery.

  • The hardenability of low-carbon boron steels with different molybdenum and chromium contents was investigated using dilatometry, microstructural observations and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS), and then discussed in terms of the segregation and precipitation behaviors of boron. The hardenability was quantitatively evaluated by a critical cooling rate obtained from the hardness distribution plotted as a function of cooling rate. It was found that the molybdenum addition was more effective than the chromium addition to increase the hardenability of boron steels, in contrast to boron-free steels. The addition of 0.2 wt.% molybdenum completely suppressed the formation of eutectoid ferrite, even at the slow cooling rate of $0.2^{\circ}C/s$, while the addition of 0.5 wt.% chromium did this at cooling rates above $3^{\circ}C/s$. The SIMS analysis results to observe the boron distribution at the austenite grain boundaries confirmed that the addition of 0.2 wt.% molybdenum effectively increased the hardenability of boron steels, as the boron atoms were significantly segregated to the austenite grain boundaries without the precipitation of borocarbide, thus retarding the austenite-to-ferrite transformation compared to the addition of 0.5 wt.% chromium. On the other hand, the synergistic effect of molybdenum and boron on the hardenability of boron steels could be explained from thermodynamic and kinetic perspectives.

  • The mutual relationships of boron, Ca and sucrose were studied in relation to in vitro pollen growth and pollen bursting, by using conventient pollen from Crinum asiaticum for experiment. Crinum pollen are paticularly sensitive to Ca. Addition of very small amount of boron to cultural media was apparently synergistic to the action of sucrose and Ca in pollen germination and tube elongation. This action was extended to a higher level of boron concentraton. Combined application of boron, Ca and sucrose always gave the better results in pollen growth and protection against pollen bursting much more than when used singly. This indicated that there is a direct relationship between better growth of pollen and increased rigidity of pollen cell wall. A higher level of Ca concentration tended to increase bursting rate of pollen grains and decrease that of pollen tubes, while boron always depressed the rate of bursting. This was considered due to increased failure in pollen germination at high level of Ca that favors pollen tube elongation. The fact that Ca show an antagonistic effect on the suppressive action of high level of boron in pollen growth and shows different effect in response to pollen bursting from boron, suggested mode of Ca and boron action in the presence of sucrose is quiate different, although to increase in rigidity of pollen cell wall by them is in common nature. It was postulated therefore that Ca acts on pectins of pollen cell wall largely as "non-metabolic" and boron as "metabolic" promoter is pollen growth and protecting pollen bursting, since boron and Ca have common nature in strengthening the pollen cell wall but act differently.but act differently.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of boron treatments on flower spike dieback of Statice (Limonium spp.) grown in soilless hydroponic and soil cultures under rain shelter system. The growth of Statice was gradually improved with increasing boron applications in the hydroponics, but not in soil culture with boron treatment as foliar spray or soil application. The degree of flower spike dieback in 6 levels (0, no dieback incidence to 5, very severe dieback incidence) ranged between 0.5 with boron application and 4.4 with no boron treatment. The content of boron in Statice flower spike increased with increasing rates of boron applications in the hydroponics, but the contents of P, Mg, and N were not affected by the boron application. However, K content was highest with no boron treatment. In soil culture, incidence of flower spike dieback decreased with foliar spray or soil application of boron. Therefore, boron application was effective in reducing flower spike dieback and improving cut-flower productivity and its quality, and the recommended rates of boron application were $50{\sim}80{\mu}gL^{-1}$ for hydroponics culture whereas 0.2% borex or ${\geq}0.4kg\;10a^{-1}$ boric acid by foliar spray application for soil culture.

  • The experiment was carried out to define the effect of the boron in nutrient solution on the development of mulberry root and cold damage. The length of shoots only attained about 50cm and then stopped in case of boron deficiency, while the mulberry trees developed vigorous and attained over 190cm long under boron supply condition. When boron is deficient, the measles appeared on surface of the stem and the necrosis appeared on the petiole, midribs and veins of leaves. At 70 days after planting, almost all new roots and old roots changed to brown, the lateral roots became necrosis by boron deficiency. After three days of stopping boron supply, many new roots changed to brown and after two days of boron resupply, new roots began to grow out and then new roots normally developed. Content of boron in leaves and barks increased by the increase of boron concentration in nutrient solution and maximum boron content in leaves and barks was obtained with boron-sufficient treatment of 0.5ppm. Treatment of 0.5ppm boron supply indicated that the leaves and barks contained more phospholipid, protein, sugar, RNA and proline than treatment of 0.01ppm boron supply in nutrient solution. The cuttings grown in boron supply nutrition have a sufficient tolerance at -10$^{\circ}C$ and -15$^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours while cuttings grown in boron-deficient nutrition have a weak tolerance at the same condition. As mentioned above, we can conclude that the effect of boron deficiency on root development is much severe and the relationship between the lack of boron and cold damage is very closely related.

  • The boron-doped polycrystalline silicon films which can be used in pressure sensors were fabricated in a high-vacuum resistance heating evaporator. Poly-Si films were deposited on quartz substrates at various temperatures and the boron was doped to the silicon film in a diffusion furnace using BN wafer. The silicon films deposited at $500^{\circ}C$ was amorphous, began to show crystalline at $600^{\circ}C$, and became polycrystalline at $700^{\circ}C$. After doping boron at $900^{\circ}C$for 10 minutes, the resistivity of the films was in the range of $0.1{\Omega}cm~1.5{\Omega}cm$, the boron density was $9.4\times10^{15}~2.1\times{10}^{17}cm^{-3}$, and the grain size was $107{\AA}~191{\AA}$.

  • Doping of boron atoms in graphite has been well known method to increase the discharge capacity as the negative electrode material for lithium secondary battery. Herein, the boron-doped graphites are prepared by mixing 1, 2.5, 5, and 7 wt. % of boron carbide in carbon during the graphitizing process. The structural states of boron in boron-doped graphites are investigated by solid-state 11B NMR spectroscopy. The resonance lines for substitutional boron atoms are identified as the second order quadrupolar powder pattern with the quardrupole coupling constant, QCC = 3.36(2) MHz. The quantitative analysis of 11B NMR spectra with boron-doped graphite has also been performed via simulation.
