  • This paper describes the design and hardware implementation of a Single Input Fuzzy Logic Controller (SIFLC) to regulate the output voltage of a boost power converter. The proposed controller is derived from the signed distance method, which reduces a multi-input conventional Fuzzy Logic Controller (CFLC) to a single input FLC. This allows the rule table to be approximated to a one-dimensional piecewise linear control surface. A MATLAB simulation demonstrated that the performance of a boost converter is identical when subjected to the SIFLC or a CFLC. However, the SIFLC requires nearly an order of magnitude less time to execute its algorithm. Therefore the former can replace the latter with no significant degradation in performance. To validate the feasibility of the SIFLC, a 50W boost converter prototype is built. The SIFLC algorithm is implemented using an Altera FPGA. It was found that the SIFLC with asymmetrical membership functions exhibits an excellent response to load and input reference changes.

  • This paper presents a Processing Engine (PE) which is used in Low Density Parity Codec (LDPC) application with a novel charge-recovery logic called pseudo-NMOS boost logic (pNBL), to achieve high-speed and low power dissipation. pNBL is a high-overdriven and low area consuming charge recovery logic, which belongs to boost logic family. Proposed Processing Engine is used in LDPC circuit to reduce operating power dissipation and increase the processing speed. To demonstrate the performance of proposed PE, a test chip is designed and fabricated with 0.18 2m CMOS technology. Simulation results indicate that proposed PE with pNBL dissipates only 1 pJ/cycle when working at the frequency of 403 MHz, which is only 36% of PE with the conventional static CMOS gates. The measurement results show that the test chip can work as high as 609 MHz with the energy dissipation of 2.1 pJ/cycle.

  • The use of boost chopper in Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) aims to capture maximum power at any wind speed condition. It is reached by adjusting the duty cycle of boost chopper. In this paper, fuzzy logic algorithm is used to find the duty cycle value which yields the maximum power output. This control scheme is verified by PSIM simulation. Another MPPT method is also simulated as a comparison.

  • This paper proposes a fuzzy logic controlled new topology of high voltage gain zero voltage switching (ZVS) asymmetrical PWM full-bridge DC-DC boost converter for constant load and high power applications. The APWM full-bridge stage provides high voltage gain and soft-switching characteristics increase the efficiency and reduce the switching losses. Fuzzy logic controller (FLC) improves the performance and dynamic characteristics of the proposed converter. A comparison with a classical proportional-integral (PI) controller demonstrates the high performances of the proposed technique in terms of effective output voltage regulation under different operating conditions. Simulation is done by integrating two different simulation platforms $PSIM^{(R)}$ and $Matlab^{(R)}/Simulink^{(R)}$ by using SimCoupler tool of $PSIM^{(R)}$. Experimental results using 120W load have been provided to validate the results.

  • This paper proposes a new method to improve performance of AdaBoost by using a distance weight function to increase the accuracy of its machine learning processes. The proposed distance weight algorithm improves classification in areas where the original binary classifier is weak. This paper derives the new algorithm's optimal solution, and it demonstrates how classifier accuracy can be improved using the proposed Distance Sensitive AdaBoost in a simulation experiment of pedestrian detection.

  • A dual-input boost-buck converter with coupled inductors (DIBBC-CI) is proposed as a thermoelectric generator (TEG) power conditioner with a wide input voltage range. The DIBBC-CI is built by cascading two boost cells and a buck cell with shared inverse coupled filter inductors. Low current ripple on both sides of the TEG and the battery are achieved. Reduced size and power losses of the filter inductors are benefited from the DC magnetic flux cancellation in the inductor core, leading to high efficiency and high power density. The operational principle, impact of coupled inductors, and design considerations for the proposed converter are analyzed in detail. Distributed maximum power point tracking, battery charging, and output control are implemented using a competitive logic to ensure seamless switching among operational modes. Both the simulation and experimental results verify the feasibility of the proposed topology and control.

  • This paper proposes the fuzzy logic based variable step-size MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) method for the stability at the steady state and the improvement of the transient response in the wind power system. If the change value of duty ratio is set on stability of the steady state, MPPT control traces to maximum power point slowly. And if the change value is set on improvement of the transient response, the system output oscillates at the maximum power point. By adjusting the step size with fuzzy logic, it can be improved the MPPT response speed and stability at steady state when MPPT control is performed to track the maximum power point. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been verified by simulations and experimental results.

  • A DC-DC Converter operates in CCM(Continuous Coundcution Mode), DCM(Discontinuous Conduction Mode), CRM(Critical Conduction Mode). The CRM is boundary between CCM and DCM. If a DC-DC converter is designed to operate in CRM, its inductor volume can decrease and power loss which caused by switch and diode can decrease. In this paper, the DC-DC converter which operates in CRM is applied to a solar array regulator(SAR) for the satellite. The switching frequency of the CRM boost SAR changes according to input and output condition. The switching frequency limit logic is applied to limit the maximum switching frequency. Meanwhile, the small signal transfer function of the CRM boost SAR is simple, so the controller design is also simple. In this paper, the small signal transfer function from control reference to solar array voltage is induced. And the voltage controller is designed based on the small signal transfer function. Finally, the CRM boost SAR is verified by simulation.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develope the drowsiness-drive perception system which judges drowsiness driving based on drivers' eye region using single vision system. To do this, first, we use the Haar-like feature and AdaBoost learning algorithm for detecting the features of the face region. And we measure the eye blinking frequency and eye closure duration from these feature data. And then, we propose the drowsiness-drive detection algorithm using the eye blinking frequency and eye closure duration. Finally, we have shown the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method through some experiments.

  • In this study, we designed a digital fuzzy logic controller based on FPGA and microprocessor for MPPT of the sofar power generation system. A fuzzy algorithm to control the power tracking function of a boost converter has been built into the FPGA, and applied to the small scaled solar power generation system. The embodied controller showed a stable operation characteristic with the small output voltage ripple for the intensity change of solar radiation. This result proves that the implementation of the power tracking controller using FPGA is an effective way compared to the existing one using microprocessor.
