  • Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate the effects of the nutritional intervention program including DASH diet education and calcium/vitamin D supplements in Korean elderly women. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study employing non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The experimental group (n=26) was given DASH diet education and supplements (calcium 1200mg and vitamin 800 IU) while the control group (n=16) was given only general health consults. After the interventions, differences were analyzed in nutrient intake, bone turnover markers and bone mineral density between the two groups. Results: After one year, bone mineral density was found reduced in both groups, but showed higher levels (p=.003) in the experimental group than the control group. After research, nutrient intakes of participants improved generally, yet there was no significant difference between the two groups. The experimental group was divided into subgroups after interventions according to the level of calcium intake, and bone density and bone markers were compared between the subgroups. In a subgroup whose calcium intake was in the normal range, bone mineral density was significantly high (p=.002) while CTx and osteocalcin were significantly low (p=.003, p=.006, respectively). Conclusion: This study is significant in that it provided a nutritional intervention program for one year to elderly women who are susceptible to osteoporosis and severely low in dietary calcium intake and it proved to be effective.

  • Fish bone-based calcium products are currently receiving much attention among high value-added industries involving calcium. Industrial processing of fish products yields unused fish parts including bones, which could be used as marine health foods to enhance the economic and environmental benefits of fish production. The ultimate goal of this study is to develop the high value-added fisheries products fortified with fish bones supplementing calcium. We here explored the physical and chemical softening methods of the fish bones to enhance texture of the fish products with a high degree of calcium absorption rates. The eluted calcium from the fish bone was quantified with the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The characteristics of the softened fish bones were determined by the laser diffraction particle size analysis, texture profile analysis, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) analysis. As the result, the optimized softening method of fish bone was established when Theragra chalcogramma bone was treated twice with the pressurized high temperature (110-120℃ and 1.0-1.5 kg/cm2). The produced softened fish bone turned out to be suitable for the food additives with low particle sizes, low hardness values, and negligible VOCs responsible for the unpleasant flavors.

  • The functional properties such as a firming maintenance capacity for fermented vegetables, protein coagulation capacity antibacterial activity, calcium and peroxide absorption capacity of calcium powder of cuttle bone treated with acetic acid (ATC) were examined. In the Korean pickled cucumbers (20 days), the calcium content of ethanol insoluble solids was 5,264.9 mg/100 g and this value was higher than that of control (2,036.4 mg/100 g). Protein coagulation capacity of ATC was $0.9\%$ and its calcium absorption capacity was $49.3\%.$ The peroxide absorption capacity of ATC was shown $0-1.1\%$ range. Antibacterial activity was detected above $0.2\%.$ The ATC was effective in a firming maintenance of fermented vegetables (cucumber), coagulation capacities for soybean milk and antibacterial activity. The ATC was not effective in clarifying wastewater. Peroxide absorption capacity toward linoleic acid could not be checked by ATC, but its calcium absorption ratio was high compared to that of commercial calcium powder.

  • Objectives : The effects of exercise on bone density have been found to be inconsistent in previous studies. We conducted a cross-sectional study in premenarcheal girls to test two hypotheses to explain these inconsistencies. Firstly,'the intensity of mechanical strain, in terms of the ground reaction force(GRF), has more important effects on the bone mass at a weight-bearing site', and secondly, 'calcium intake modifies the bone response to exercise'. Methods : The areal bone mineral density was measured at the Os calcis, using peripheral dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, in 91 premenarcheal girls aged between 9 and 12 years. The intensity of mechanical strain of exercise was assessed by a self-report questionnaire and scored by the GRF as multiples of body weight, irrespective of the frequency and duration of exercise. The energy and calcium intake were calculated from the 24-hour dietary recall. An analysis of covariance(ANCOVA) was used to determine the interaction and main effects of exercise and calcium on the bone density, after adjusting for age, weight, height and energy intake. Results : The difference in the bone density between moderate and low impact exercise was more pronounced in the high than low calcium intake group. The bone density for moderate impact exercise and high calcium intake was significantly higher than that for low impact exercise (p=0.046) and low calcium intake, after adjusting for age, weight, height and energy intake. Conclusions : Our study suggests that the bone density at a weight-bearing site is positively related to the intensity of mechanical loading exercise, and the calcium intake may modify the bone response to exercise at the loaded site in premenarcheal girls.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of manganese (Mn) supplementation on bone status and calcium balance in ovariectomized rats according to the calcium intake levels. Total of 50 Sprague Dawley female rats (6 weeks) were divided into 5 groups and bred for 12 weeks: sham operated control group (SACa), OVX Ca deficiency group (OLCa) with Ca deficiency diet (0.1% Ca modified AIN-93N diet), OVX Ca deficiency & Mn supplement group (OLCaMn), OVX adequate Ca group (OACa; 0.5% Ca AIN-93N diet) and OVX adequate Ca & Mn supplement group (OACaMn). BMD (bone mineral density) of the femur was increased by Mn supplementation in OVX adequate Ca group. However, BMDs of spine, femur and tibia were lowered in OLCa compared to the OLCaMn group. Bone strength of tibia in OLCaMn group was significantly lower than OLCa group. Serum ALP (alkaline phosphatase) and CTx (C-telopeptide of collagen cross-links) levels were significantly higher in ovariectomized rats than those in the sham group, but they were not changed by Mn supplementation. Ca retention rate and Ca absorption rate did not differ among the experimental groups. Urinary Ca excretion was increased by Mn supplementation in Ca deficiency rats. In summary, Mn supplementation resulted in positive effects on bone mineral density ovariectomized rats with which intake adequate Ca. However, Mn supplementation on Ca deficiency ovariectomized rats resulted in decrement of BMO and bone strength by increasing Ca excretion. Therefore, it is encouraged to consider calcium intake levels in supplementation of manganese in order to prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis and to keep bone healthy. • This experiment was performed to investigate the response of inorganic substances in alveolar bone in relation to the experimental tooth movement. Right canine in maxillary jaw was tipped in cats by coil springs generating 80 gm. force, in mandibular jaw, the force was 100 gm. force. Cats were divided into five groups and orthodontically treated for one hour, 1, 7, 14 and 28 days, respectively. Alveolar bone samples were obtained from tension and compression sites as well as from contralateral control sites. The level of calcium of alveolar bone was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and inorganic phosphorus was measured by spectrophotometry. The results obtained were as follows: 1. In tension and compression site of maxillary alveolar bone, calcium levels were decreased at 1, 7 and 14 days, but recovered at 28 days. 2. The levels of inorganic phosphorus in compression site of maxillary alveolar bone had little change but in tension site of maxillary alveolar bone , phosphorous levels were decreased, 3. Calcium levels in tension and compression site of mandibular alveolar bone were decreased, especially at 28 days. 4. In tension and compression site of mandibular alveolar bone, inorganic phosphorus were slightly decreased from 1 day.

  • Imbalance in calcium and phosphorous metabolism due to aging or menopause leads to osteoporosis. In contrast to patients with normal blood pressure, hypertensive patients have a higher loss of calcium in the urine with its attendant risk of osteoporosis. The high blood pressure is associated with the risk of bone loss and abnormalities in calcium metabolism leading to calcium loss. So we retrospectively investigated the changes of bone mineral density (BMD) which drugs can have clinical influences over osteoporosis treatments of patients with calcium-antagonists as common antihypertensive drugs and with bisphosphonates which causes a most effective inhibition of osteoclasts resorption. As a result over 70 years of age group and within bisphosphonates group, alendronate 70 mg once-weekly group showed significant increase of BMD in lumbar area. Combination group of cilnidipine and $maxmarvil^{(R)}$ showed very significant decrease of BMD. In conclusion, it is desirable that combination therapy with calcium-antagonists is used carefully in the treatment of osteoporosis with high blood pressure.

  • [Purpose] Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) administration reportedly recovers osteoporosis, a bone disorder associated with bone deficiency in postmenopausal women. However, the physiological mechanism of DHEA in osteoporosis remains elusive, especially in terms of intestinal calcium absorption. Therefore, we investigated the effect of DHEA administration on calcium absorption in ovariectomized (OVX) female rats using an estrogen receptor antagonist. [Methods] Female Sprague-Dawley rats (n=23, 6 weeks old) were randomized into three groups: OVX control group (OC, n=7), OVX with DHEA treatment group (OD, n=8), and OVX with DHEA inhibitor group (ODI, n=8) for 8 weeks. [Results] Intestinal calcium accumulation, as well as the rate of absorption, demonstrated no significant differences during the experimental period among investigated groups. The bone mineral density (BMD) of the tibia at the proximal metaphysis was higher in the OD group than that in the OC group (p<0.05); however, BMD of the ODI group showed no significant difference from investigated groups. Furthermore, the BMD of the tibia at the diaphysis did not significantly differ among these groups. [Conclusion] We revealed that DHEA administration does not involve intestinal Ca absorption, although this treatment improves BMD levels in OVX rats. These observations indicate that the effect of DHEA on the bone in postmenopausal women is solely due to its influence on bone metabolism and not intestinal calcium absorption.

  • Objectives : This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of Amydae Carapax (AC) on parameter related to bone metabolism in ovariectomized rats. Methods : We measured alkaline phosphatase activity and contents of estrogen, calcium, hydroxyproline, osteocalcin, calcitonin and parathyroid hormone after the ovariectomized rats were treated with AC for 30 days. Results : Serum estrogen, calcium and calcitonin contents in ovariectomized rats significantly decreased, but increased after AC treatment. [Significant increase of serum alkaline phosphatase activity, parathyroid hormone activity and osteocalcin content in ovariectomized rats was remarkably decreased by AC treatment. Increase of urinary calcium and hydroxyproline content in ovariectomized rats was decreased by AC treatment.] Conclusions : These results shows that AC has the ability to counteract abnormal calcium metabolic processes due to sex hormone inequality, promoting bone absorption and inhibiting bone formation.

  • Bone graft using growth factors and guided tissue regeneration have been used for the regeneration of infrabony defects which caused by periodontal disease. Calcium sulfate which is one of the resorbable barrier materials used for guided tissue regeneration. Platelet rich plasma which is a easy method to obtain the growth factors had many common points but, platelet rich plasma was still studying. This study was the comparative study between bone graft using platelet rich plasma and guided tissue regeneration using calcium sulfate barrier material in clinical view. For the study, 28 sites(2 or 3 wall infrabony defects) were treated. 14 infrabony defects were received surgical implantation of BBP-calcium sulfate composite with a calcium sulfate barrier and the others received BBP mixed with platelet rich plasma. Clinical outcome was accessed 3 and 6 months of postsurgery. 1. There was no statistical difference between CS group and PRP group in pocket depth, gingival recession, clinical attachment level, and probing bone level at baseline. 2. There was statistically significant reduction in probing depth, clinical attachment level, and probing bone level at 3 and 6 months postsurgery(p<0.05). 3. In the probing depth and clincial attachment level PPR group had less improvement than CS group, but there was no statistically difference at 3 and 6 months postsurgery. 4. In the recession PPR group had less recession than CS group, but there was no statistically difference at 3 and 6 months postsurgery. 5. In the probing bone level PPR group had less improvement than CS group, but there was no statistically difference at 6 months postsurgery. In conclusion bone graft using platelet rich plasma and guided tissue regeneration using calcium sulfate barrier showed similar clinical improvement for the treatment of 2 or 3 wall infrabony defects.
