Adhesive-bonded joints are widely used in the industry. Recently, applications of adhesive bonding joints have been increased extensively in automobile and aircraft industry. The strength of adhesive joints is influenced by the surface roughness, adhesive shape, stress distribution, and etc. However, the magnitude of the influence has not yet been clarified because of the complexity of the phenomena. In this study, as the fundamental research of adhesive bonding joints, the effects of adhesive shape and loading speed on bonding strength properties and durability of aluminum to polycarbonate single-lap joints were studied. To evaluate the effect of adhesive shape, several modified shapes were used, and loading speeds were varied from 0.05 to 5mm/min. As a result, the load distribution showed a brittle fracture tendency. The trigonal edged single lap and bevelled lap joints showed the higher strength than the plain single lap, trigonal single lap, joggle lap and double lap joints in same adhesive area. The fractures of trigonal single lap and trigonal edged single lap joints that had the higher strength level were shown as the mixture type of the cohesive and interfacial-failure, mostly joggle lap joints that had the lower strength level were shown as the adhesive-failure.
A composite bridge deck system assembled from a modular profile with double-rectangular cell has been developed for highway bridges. This study is focused on the experimental characterization of flexure performance of pultruded GFRP deck under static loading. Several tests were conducted on single modules and adhesively bonded 2 and 5-modules. The specimen details such as dimensions, material properties and fiber architecture, and experimental set-up and testing procedure have been addressed. It is found that the presented GFRP composite modular deck is very efficient for use in bridges.

Nuclear containment building is the last barrier for being secure from any nuclear power plant accident. Therefore, it is very important to understand the ultimate capacity of nuclear containment building to loads associated with severe accidents. LOCA (loss of coolant accident) is considered as the basic accidental load and CANDU-type containment building is considered as a target structure in order to conduct the numerical analysis for the structural safety of a containment building. The CANDU-type containment building is a prestressed concrete shell structure which has the dome and the cylindrical wall and is reinforced with bonded tendons. In this paper, the evaluation of ultimate internal pressure capacity was carried out by nonlinear analysis of a prestressed concrete containment building using 3-dimensional structural analysis system.

A novel interconnection technology based on a 52InSn solder was developed for flexible display applications. The display industry is currently trying to develop a flexible display, and one of the crucial technologies for the implementation of a flexible display is to reduce the bonding process temperature to less than $150^{\circ}C$. InSn solder interconnection technology is proposed herein to reduce the electrical contact resistance and concurrently achieve a process temperature of less than $150^{\circ}C$. A solder bump maker (SBM) and fluxing underfill were developed for these purposes. SBM is a novel bumping material, and it is a mixture of a resin system and InSn solder powder. A maskless screen printing process was also developed using an SBM to reduce the cost of the bumping process. Fluxing underfill plays the role of a flux and an underfill concurrently to simplify the bonding process compared to a conventional flip-chip bonding using a capillary underfill material. Using an SBM and fluxing underfill, a $20{\mu}m$ pitch InSn solder SoP array on a glass substrate was successfully formed using a maskless screen printing process, and two glass substrates were bonded at $130^{\circ}C$.

In this paper, the thermal shock responses of collinear cracks in a layered medium are investigated based on the uncoupled, quasi-static plane thermoelasticity. The medium is modeled as a bonded structure composed of a surface layer and a semi-infinite substrate. Between these two dissimilar homogeneous constituents, a functionally graded interfacial zone exists with the nonhomogeneous features of continuously varying thermoelastic properties. Three cracks are assumed to be present in the layered medium, one in each one of the constituent materials, aligned collinearly normal to the nominal interfaces. A system of singular integral equations is solved, subjected to the forcing terms of equivalent transient thermal tractions acting on the locations of cracks via superposition. Main results presented are the transient thermal stress intensity factors to illustrate the parametric effects of various geometric and amterial combinations of the medium with the thermoelastically graded interfacial zone and the collinear cracks.
One of the primary advantages of acrylic resin teeth is their ability to bond chemically to the denture base resins. Fracture od acrylic resin teeth from a maxillary denture, however, is not uncommon. Bonding failures have been attributed to faulty boil-out procedures that fail to eliminate all traces of wax from the ridge lap surfaces of the teeth and to contamination of the ridge lap surface by careless application of tinfoil substitute. Attempts to increase the strength of the bond between acrylic resin teeth and heat-cured denture base resin include grinding the glossy ridge lap surface (in fluid system), painting the ridgelap surface of the teeth with monomer-polymer solution, and cutting retention grooves in the ridge lap surface of the teeth. This latter method has been tested by applying a tensile force in a labial direction to the incisal part of the lingual surface of the acrylic resin teeth. A progressive shear compressive load was applied at an angle to the lingual surface of acrylic resin teeth bonded to denture base acrylic resin. No statistically singificant advantage was derived by preparing retention grooves of different shapes in the ridgelap surface of the denture teeth.

An active compensation method for the deformation of composite structures using additional controllable metal parts is proposed, and its feasibility is experimentally investigated in a simulated space environment. Composite specimens are tested in a vacuum chamber, which is able to maintain pressure on the order of 10-3 torr and interior temperature in the range of ${\pm}30^{\circ}C$. The displacement-measuring interferometer system, which consists of a heterodyne HeNe laser and an interferometer, is used to measure the displacement of the whole structure. Meanwhile, the strain of the composite part and temperature of both parts are measured by fiber Bragg grating sensors and thermistors, respectively. The displacement of the composite structure is maintained within a tolerance of ${\pm}1{\mu}m$ by controlling the elongation of the metal part, which is bonded to the end of the composite part. Also, the possibility of fiber Bragg grating sensors as control input sensors is successfully demonstrated using a proper corrective factor based on the specimen temperature gradient data.
During feeding on algal cytoplasm, some sacoglossans are known to keep the chloroplasts photosynthetically active for days to months in their digestive cells. Korean sacoglossan mollusks containing functional chloroplasts were screened using an in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence measuring system (pulse amplitude modulation, PAM). We collected six sacoglossans feeding on siphonous and siphonocladous green algae (Elysia atroviridis, E. nigrocapitata, E. ornata, Ercolania boodleae, Placida dendritica, Stiliger sp.) and one feeding on ceramiaceaen algae (Stiliger berghi) and performed feeding experiments using 37 algal species. Three species of Elysia showed strong photosynthetic activity for months. However, P. dendritica maintained functional chloroplasts only for several hours after feeding. E. boodleae, S. berghi, and Stiliger sp. showed no photosynthetic activity in any circumstances. Among all species, E. nigrocapitata was capable to tolerate the longest period of starvation for over 4 months. Four 'solar powered' sacoglossans bonded avidly to their specific algal food. Each species attached to and consumed only one algal species when several algae were given together. While they occasionally consumed other algae after prolonged starvation, they always reverted to their specific algae when available.

We recently developed a friability test procedure, which will be used as one of substance tests for Extremely Insensitive Detonating Substances(EIDSs) in Test Series 7 of the United Nations. This test was intended to assess the susceptibility of insensitive explosives to the break-up as high strain rate and subsequent ignition characteristics of the deformed material. We designed an air gun system using the hydro code simulation. The projectile velocities of the gun were in good agreement with those predicted by the hydro code with an inert material. Three different types of explosives, melt castable Comp B, castable plastic bonded explosives(PBXs), and pressable PBXs were tested during the development of the test procedure. Two tastable PBXs, i.e. DXD-09 and DXD-10, which are currently under development as candidate formulations of EIDS were classified as EIDS, since test results with these formulations were far better than the criterion of the UN Test Series 7.
An active inspection system using Lamb waves for structural health monitoring was considered in this paper. In order to understand the characteristics of the Lamb waves propagating in a composite plate, the experiment was performed for a quasi-isotropic composite plate with thickness variation. Lamb waves were generated and received by the thin PZT transducers bonded on the surface. In this test, a simple new technique was tried for characterizing the Lamb waves propagating across the discontinuity due to the thickness variation. The results showed that Lamb waves were more sensitive to the thinner plate with faster group velocity and that the thickness change in composite plate was detectable. Consequently, the potential of applying this technique to structural health monitoring was verified.
