  • This paper describes on an advanced technology of 3C-SiC/Si(100) wafer direct bonding using PECVD oxide to intermediate layer for SiCOI(SiC-on-Insulator) structure because it has an attractive characteristics such as a lower thermal stress, deposition temperature, more quick deposition rate and higher bonding strength than common used poly-Si and thermal oxide. The PECVD oxide was characterized by ATR-FTIR. The bonding strength with variation of HF pre treatment condition was measured by tensile strength measurement system. After etch-back using TMAH solution, roughness of 3CSiC surface crystallinity and bonded interface was measured and analyzed by AFM, XRD, and SEM respectively.

  • A custom micro-PIV optics assembly has been used to measure the flow fold inside a T-junction of a microchannel. The micro-PIV system consists of microscope objectives of various magnifications, a dichroic cube, and an 8-bit CCD camera. Fluorescent particles of diameters 620 nm have been used with a Nd:YAG laser and color filters. A programmable syringe pump with Teflon tubings were used to inject particle-seeded distilled water into the channel at flow rates of 2.0, 4.0, 6.0 mL/hr. The micro-channels are fabricated with PDMS with a silicon mold, then O$_{2}$ -ion bonded onto a slide glass. Results show differences in flow characteristics and resolution according to fluid injection rates, and magnifications, respectively. The results include PIV data with vector-to-vector distances of 2 $\mu$m with 32 pixel-square interrogation windows at 50$\%$ overlap.

  • The filtration of the magnetic fibrous polymeric filter with packing density profile made of a self-bonded, nonwoven structure comprising a thermoplastic polymer and a magnetic substance was investigated using an oil filter tester, a particle quantifier and an image analyzer system. The magnetic fibrous polymeric filter showed excellent filtration efficiency compared with conventional paper filter. From the experimental results, It is deduced that the filtration mechanism of conventional paper filter is only the function of physical porosity by surface filteration. On the other hand, the newly magnetic fibrous polymeric filter is designed with a new concept in filtration mechanism. That is, it has a dual function of depth and magnetic filters by physical porosity and magnetic attraction. The newly magnetic fibrous polymeric filter has been shown to be a highly effective oil filter for lubrication systems.

  • Square beam type piezoelectric vibrating gyro is developed for the measurement of angular velocity, which is compact, small in size and mass- producible. It features that three pieces of piezoelectric ceramics and bonded onto one face of equilateral square bar type gyro head. Two of them are used as sentuators which drive the gyro head and measure Coriolis force. The third piece is used for the feedback signal in order to resonate the gyro head and measure Coriolis force. The third piece is used for the feedback signal in order to resonate the gyro head with its fundamental natural frequency. Matching two fundamental natural frequencies in the gyro head with its driving frequency is found critical in the design of vibration gyro. Calibration results show that the vibrating gyro developed has the dynamic characteristics of first-order system within the frequency range of interest, which can be easily compensated by a lead compensator.

  • A resin bonded copper-graphite brush was investigated to evaluate the characteristics electrical signal transmission through a sliding contact as a function of the relative amount of graphite and copper in the brush. Particular attention was given to the correlation between electrical signal fluctuation and tribological properties in an electrical sliding contact system. A ring-on-block type tribotester was used for this experiment and the ring was made from pure copper. Results showed that a copper-graphite brush at a particular composition range exhibited the most stable frictional behavior with a minimum voltage drop. The amount of voltage drop at the friction interface was affected by the surface roughness, transfer film formation at the friction interface, and the real area of contact. Microscopic observations and the surface analysis showed a good agreement with the results from this experiment. The results also indicated that the electrical signal flunctuation was directly associated with the oscillation of the coefficient of friction during sliding by nanoscale variation of contacts at the friction interface.

  • In this paper an electromechanically coupled isogeometric finite element is utilized to analyse Lamb wave excitation with piezoceramic actuators. An effective actuator design reduces the energy needed for Lamb wave excitation, which is beneficial if a structural health monitoring system should be applied for a structure. For a better understanding of the actuator behavior the piezoeceramics are studied both free and bonded at a structure. The numerical part of the analysis is performed utilizing isogeometric finite elements. To obtain the optimal performance for the numerical analysis the effect of k-refinement of the isogeometric element with respect to the convergence is studied and discussed. The optimal numerical setup with the best convergence rate is proposed and is validated with free piezoeceramic actuators. The validated model is then utilized to study the impact of actuator shape and adhesive bondline effect to the wave amplitude. The study shows that simplified analytical equations do not predict the optimal excitation frequencies for all piezoceramic designs accurately.

  • The buckling of an orthotropic layer bonded to an isotropic half-space with an interface crack subjected to compressive load under plane strain is considered. Basic stability equations derived from the mathematical theory of elasticity are applied to describe the buckling behavior. A system of homogeneous Cauchy-type singular integral equations of the second kind is solved numerically by utilizing Gauss-Chebyshev integral formulae. Numerical results for the buckling load are presented for various delamination geometries and material properties of both the layer and half-space.

  • Dynamic characteristics of smart hull structure are investigated and active vibration control performance is evaluated. Dynamic model of smart hull structure with surface bonded Macro-fiber Composite (MFC) actuators is established by analytical method. Equations of motion of the host hull structure are derived based on Donnell-Mushtari equilibrium equations for a thin cylindrical shell. A general model for the interaction between hull structure and MFC actuator is included in the dynamic model. Modal analysis is then conducted and mode shapes and corresponding natural frequencies are investigated. After constructing of the optimal control algorithm, active vibration control performance of the proposed system is evaluated. It has been shown that structural vibration can be reduced effectively with proper control input.
