  • An improved numerical model for non-linear analysis of reinforced concrete (RC) slabs subjected to blast loading is proposed. This approach considers a strain rate dependent orthotropic constitutive model that directly determines the stress state using the stress-strain relation acquired from the data obtained using the biaxial strength envelope. Moreover, the bond-slip between concrete and reinforcing steel is gradually enlarged after the occurrence of cracks and is concentrated in the plastic hinge region. The bond-slip model is introduced to consider the crack direction of the concrete under a biaxial stress state. Correlation studies between the numerical analysis and the experimental results were performed to evaluate the analytical model. The results show that the proposed model can effectively be used in dynamic analyses of reinforced concrete slab members subjected to explosive loading. Moreover, it was determined that it is important to consider biaxial behavior in the material model and the bond-slip effect.

  • A tendon model that can effectively be used in finite element analyses of prestressed concrete (PSC) structures with bonded tendons is proposed on the basis of the bond characteristics between a tendon and its surrounding concrete. Since tensile forces between adjacent cracks are transmitted from a tendon to concrete by bond forces, the constitutive law of a bonded tendon stiffened by grouting is different from that of a bare tendon. Accordingly, the apparent yield stress of an embedded tendon is determined from the bond-slip relationship. The definition of the multi-linear average stress-strain relationship is then obtained through a linear interpolation of the stress difference at the post-yielding stage. Unlike in the case of a bonded tendon, on the other hand, a stress increase beyond the effective prestress in an unbonded tendon is not section-dependent but member-dependent. The tendon stress unequivocally represents a uniform distribution along the length when the friction loss is excluded. Thus, using a strain reduction factor, the modified stress-strain curve of an unbonded tendon is derived by successive iterations. The validity of the proposed two tendon models is verified through correlation studies between analytical and experimental results for PSC beams and slabs.

  • Recently it has been actively studied that the use of hybrid GFRP-concrete structure with dual purpose of both a permanent forwork and main tensile reinforcement of GFRP plank. In applying general analysis and design technique to evaluate the performance of hybrid structures with cast-in-place high strength concrete and GFRP plank, it is essential that the characteristics of the bond slip model is identified. In this study a simplified bilinear bond slip model for hybrid structure with GFRP plank and cast-in-place high strength concrete is proposed. Maximum average bond stress of simple bond slip relationship that has been proposed in this study is 3.29MPa, initial slope is 35.66MPa/mm, the total slip is 0.23mm and interfacial fracture energy is 0.37kN/m.

  • In pretensioned concrete structures, bond between prestressing steel and concrete is an essential component to ensure the integrity of a pretensioned member. The anchorage and development of the prestressing force depend exclusively on bond. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of bond and development length between pretensioned steel and concrete. To resolve the controversy over the adequacy of the current code provision on development length of prestressing strands, a comprehensive test program has been scheduled and twenty four rectangular prestressed concrete beams have been tested to determine development length. Major test variables include diameter of strands (12.7mm, 15.2mm) and concrete covers (3cm, 4cm, 5cm). The test results indicate that the development length based on the bond stress-slip relation. The proposed model can evaluate realistically the development length of pretensioned prestressed concrete members and can be the good basis for the future basis of code equations on development length of PSC members.

  • Bond test was carried out to assess the effect of several variables on bond characteristics between reinforcing bar and concrete. Key variables are concrete compressive strength(low, medium high, and ultra-high), bar diameter(13mm and 22mm), and concrete cover(25mm; 1-inch, 38mm; 1.5-inch, and 51mm; 2-inch). Confining effect and bar spacing are not taken into account. Thirty-two specimens subjected to uniaxial tension were tested under hypothesis uniform bond stress distribution along the reinforcing bar embeded in concrete. Test results(ultimate bond stress) were compared with bond and development provisions of the ACI building Code(ACl 318-89) and local bond stress versus slip relationship diagram represented to show effect of the above variables.

  • Externally bonded ultrahigh performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) is commonly used as a strengthening material for reinforced concrete (RC) structures. This study reports the results of an experimental program investigating the bonding behavior between concrete and prefabricated UHPFRC plates. The overall experimental program is consisting of five RC specimens, which are strengthened using the different lengths and widths of prefabricated UHPFRC plates. These specimens were analyzed using the pull-pull double-shear test. The performance of each strengthened specimen is presented, discussed and compared in terms of failure mode, maximum load, load-slip relationship, fracture energy and strain distribution. Specimen C-25-160-300 which bonded along the whole width of 160 mm recorded the highest maximum load (109.2 kN) among all the analysed specimens. Moreover, a 3D numerical finite element model (FEM) is proposed to simulate the bond behavior between concrete and UHPFRC plates. Moreover, this study reviews the analytical models that can predict the relationship between the maximum bond stress and slip for strengthened concrete elements. The proposed FEM is verified against the experimental program and then used to test 36 RC specimens strengthened with prefabricated UHPFRC plates with different concrete grades and UHPFRC plate widths. The obtained results together with the review of analytical models helped in the formation of a design equation for estimating the bond stress between concrete and prefabricated UHPFRC plates.

  • The purpose of this research is the evaluation of the estimation equation of "CEP-FIP Model Code 1990(1991)", recently included in the domestic "Concrete Structure Design Code(2007)" in consideration of the concrete strength. As evaluation tools, crack element model applied a detailed bond-slip model as well as crack width obtained from experimental results by earlier researches. The crack element model is verified through the comparison with experimental results. The important variables in the estimation equation for the crack width in CEP-FIP Model Code 1990 are the tension stiffening effect and mean bond stress proposed in the paper to be improved in consideration of the concrete strength.

  • This study deals with the estimation of the crack width by stabilized cracking considering bond-slip relationships in reinforced concrete members. The proposed method utilizes the sameness of tension stiffening and a change of bond-slip relationships because of concrete's splitting. The validity, accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method are established by comparing the analytical results with the experimental date and the major code spcifications. The analytical results of analysis presented in this study indicate that the proposed method can be effectively estimated the crack width of the reinforced concrete members.

  • A numerical model to simulate bond-slip behavior of composite beam bridges is introduced in this paper. Assuming a linear bond stress-slip relation along the interface between the slab and girder, the slip behavior is implemented into a finite element formulation. Adopting the introduced model, the slip behavior can be taken account even in a beam element which is composed of both end nodes only. Governing equation of the slip behavior, based on the linear partial interaction theory, can be determined from the force equilibrium and a constant curvature distribution across the section of a composite beam. Since the governing equation for the slip behavior requires the moment values at both end nodes, the piecewise linear distribution of the constant bending moment in an element is assumed. Analysis results by the model are compared with numerical results and experimental values, and load-displacement relations of composite beams were then evaluated to verify the validity of the proposed model.
