Influence of Grain Processing and Dietary Protein Degradability on Nitrogen Metabolism, Energy Balance and Methane Production in Young Calves

  • Crossbred (Bos taurus${\times}$Bos indicus) calves were used from birth till 14 weeks of age to evaluate three sources of protein that differed in ruminal degradability viz. groundnut cake alone (HD) or in combination with cottonseed meal (MD) and meat and bone meal (LD), when fed along with two sources of non-structural carbohydrates viz. raw (R) and thermally processed (P) maize. Twenty four new born calves were arranged in six groups in a $3{\times}2$ factorial design and fed on whole milk up to 56 d of age. All the different calves received calf startes along with green oats (Avena sativa) from 14 d of age onwards free-choice. A metabolism trial of 6d starters duration, conducted after 90 d of experimental feeding, revealed greater (p<0.05) digestibility of DM, OM, total carbohydrates, NDF and ADF in calves fed on the P diets than on the R diets promoting greater (p<0.05) metabolizable energy intake. The digestibility of NDF was higher (p<0.01) on LD diets where as calves on MD diets exhibited significantly lower digestibility of ADF (p<0.01). The retention of nitrogen per unit metabolic body size was significantly (p<0.05) higher on the LD-P diet than on the diet HD-P which, in turn, was higher (p<0.05) than that of HD-R. Nitrogen retention as percentage of intake was significantly greater (p<0.05) on LD-P than on LD-R diets (52.2 vs. 36.4%). Also, P fed calves utilized nitrogen more efficiently than the R fed as shown by retention of significantly greater proportions of intake (47.4 vs. 40.9%) and absorbed (65.8 vs. 59.5%) nitrogen. Calorimetric evaluation of the diets through open-circuit respiration chamber revealed that the dietary treatments had no impact on methane production by calves. The intake of DE and ME was improved (p<0.01) because of maize processing resulting in greater (p<0.01) retention of energy. The protein degradability exerted no influence on the partitioning or retention of energy. A significant interaction between cereal and protein types was evident with respect to retention of both nitrogen (p<0.01) and energy (p<0.05). In conclusion, no discernible trend in the influence of cereal processing was apparent on the dietary protein degradability, but the positive effect of cereal processing on energy retention diminished with the increase in dietary undegradability.

Effect of Grape Pomace Powder, Mangosteen Peel Powder and Monensin on Nutrient Digestibility, Rumen Fermentation, Nitrogen Balance and Microbial Protein Synthesis in Dairy Steers

  • This study was designed to investigate the effect of grape pomace powder (GPP), mangosteen peel powder (MPP) and monensin on feed intake, nutrients digestibility, microorganisms, rumen fermentation characteristic, microbial protein synthesis and nitrogen balance in dairy steers. Four, rumen fistulated dairy steers with initial body weight (BW) of $220{\pm}15kg$ were randomly assigned according to a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design to receive four treatments. The treatments were as follows: T1 = control, T2 = supplementation with monensin at 33 mg/kg diet, T3 = supplementation with GPP at 2% of dry matter intake, and T4 = supplementation with MPP at 30 g/kg diet. The steers were offered the concentrate diet at 0.2% BW and 3% urea treated rice straw (UTRS) was fed ad libitum. It was found that GPP supplemented group had higher UTRS intake and nutrient digestibility in terms of neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber than those in control group (p<0.05). Ammonia nitrogen ($NH_3-N$) and blood urea-nitrogen concentration were higher in monensin, GPP and MPP supplemented groups (p<0.05). Total volatile fatty acids and propionate in the GPP group were higher than those in the control group (p<0.05) while acetate concentration, and acetate to propionate ratio were decreased (p<0.01) when steers were supplemented with GPP, monensin, and MPP, respectively. Moreover, protozoal populations in GPP, MPP, and monensin supplementation were significantly lower than those in the control group (p<0.05), while cellulolytic bacterial population was significantly higher in the control group (p<0.05). Nitrogen retention, microbial crude protein and efficiency of microbial nitrogen synthesis were found significantly higher in steers that received GPP (p<0.05). Based on this study it could be concluded that the GPP has potential as an alternative feed supplement in concentrate diets which can result in improved rumen fermentation efficiency, digestibility and microbial protein synthesis in steers fed on treated rice straw.

물의 경도가 커피의 조성과 일반 대학생들의 커피 선호도에 미치는 영향 (Effect of water hardness on coffee composition and coffee preference by university students)

  • 커피의 98% 이상을 차지하는 물이 경도에 따라 커피의 풍미에 미치는 영향을 평가하는 것은 매우 실용적이고 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 증류수(L) 및 중간 경도(M), 높은 경도의 물(H)로 커피를 제조하고 추출된 커피 성분 중 유기산, caffeine, eugenol 등을 분석하고 커피 맛에 대한 선호도 분석을 위해 관능평가를 진행하였다. 유기산은 H-커피에서 유의적으로 가장 높은 농도로 추출되었고 쓴맛의 대표 물질인 chlorogenic acid와 caffeine은 L-커피에서 유의적으로 가장 높은 농도로 추출되었으며 커피의 대표적 향기 성분 중의 하나로 알려진 eugenol은 물의 경도에 따른 유의적 차이를 보이지 않았다. 여성 56명 남성 47명으로 구성된 일반 대학생을 대상으로 진행한 관능평가에서 쓴맛, 신맛, body감, balance의 항목에서 평균값들의 차이를 보이지 않았으나 42.4%를 차지하는 36명이 L-커피를 선호하였고 M- 과 H-커피에 대해서는 각각 29.4% 및 28.2%의 선호도를 나타냈다. 본 연구의 결과는 일반 대학생들이 선호하는 커피는 낮은 경도의 물로 추출한 것으로 높은 경도의 물로 추출된 낮은 쓴맛의 커피를 선호하는 커피 전문가들의 기존의 평가 지표와는 다를 수 있음을 시사한다.

  • Effects of dietary brown seaweed product levels on performance and metabolism of protein and energy were investigated in broiler chicks that were activated the acute phase response. One day old chicks were fed diets containing either 0.0(basal), 1.0, 2.0 or 4.0 % brown seaweed products for 3 weeks. The acute phase response was activated by injecting i.p. the Salmonella typhimurium lipopolysacharide(LPS) at $2^{nd}$ week of age. The acute phase response lowered nitrogen balance(NB)/ $kg^{0.75}$ (metabolic body size) and highered dietary ME values in birds fed diets containing brown seaweed product. Increase in dietary brown seaweed products levels lowered daily gain, and NB, uric acid nitrogen(UAN) excretion and ME utilization per $kg^{0.75}$ in chicks with the acute phase response. But the dietary brown seaweed product level did not affect the performance of 3 Week old broiler chicks that experienced the acute phase response. And the brown seaweed products 1.0 and 2.0 % diets lessened the feed intake reduction caused by the acute phase response in broiler chicks. The brown seaweed 2.0% diet increased NB / g diet or $kg^{0.75}$ and decreased the excretion of UAN/g diet or $kg^{0.75}$. This result indicated that the brown seaweed was able to interact with the acute phase response and increased protein retention via decreased breakdown of protein in birds fed brown seaweed 2.0% diet.

  • 동양의학에서는 사람의 체질의 허와 실에 따라 적절한 처방을 한다. 즉, 사람의 체질을 목, 화, 토, 금, 수의 오행으로 구분하고 그 체질에 따라 강하고 약한 장부를 서로 균형이 되도록 하는 것이다. 예컨대 그 처방의 하나인 향기요법도 나약한 신체부위를 보강해 주는 향을 사용하여 치료를 하고 있다. 그러나 이러한 오행요법은 실제 임상에서는 많은 효과를 보고 있지만 과학적 근거보다는 통계적 및 주관적 요소가 강한 면이 있기 때문에 이에 대한 보다 체계적인 연구가 절실히 요구되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 음양오행의 특성을 감안, 폐의 기능이 강한 금형과 반대로 나약한 화형을 대상으로 하여 일단 쓴맛이 나는 라벤더(lavender)향을 자극, 뇌파의 반응정도를 파악해 봄으로써 향과 체질간의 상관관계를 분석하고 나아가 오행요법의 적용가능성을 알아보았다. 그 결과 라벤더 향은 화형인 사람에게는 강한 장부인 담을 편안하게 하여주고 금형인 사람에게는 약한 간과 강한 담을 서로 균형을 맞추도록 하여 간담을 안정시키는 효과가 있음을 보여주었다. 이는 그 동안 동양의학(한의학)에서 말하는 오행처방과도 일치하는 결과라 하겠다.

WTO 보조금 분쟁을 대비한 수출신용제도 운영방안에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Operation of Export Credit Policy preparing for possible WTO ASCM Disputes)

  • When a trade conflict arises related to an officially supported export credit programme, The World Trade Organization(WTO), decides on whether the programme is a forbidden subsidy stipulated in the Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures(the ASCM Agreement). Korea was taken to the WTO panel two times for the export credit programme. One is the semiconductor case in 2002 and the other was the shipbuilding disputes in 2004. And, In 2012, the U.S. Commerce Department ruled K-SURE's export insurance for Korean refrigerator manufacturers as a forbidden subsidy even if the case was not taken to the WTO. This paper examines the significance of export credit programmes on the WTO ASCM Agreement and discusses how to operate these programmes so they would not infringe upon the Agreement by analyzing the actual cases of WTO subsidy conflicts that involved Korean enterprises in relation to export credit programmes for the purpose of determining the related issues and impacts. From this research the results were as follows: First, on whether export credit is a prohibited subsidy, the deciding factor was whether a benefit has been conferred to the beneficiary. On the presence of a benefit, the WTO panel used market benchmarks as the main criteria. Thus, official export credit agencies(ECAs) should be careful not to provide export credit support which had been granted to the beneficiary at better than market terms. Second, in the case of export credit, the special status of ECA as a public body receiving government support itself does not constitute a subsidy. However, caution must be taken not to provide export credit that may lead to WTO ASCM subsidy conflicts involving a certain exporter or industry by setting up clear and valid regulations and fair work processes in the operation of export credit programmes. Third, item (j) of Annex I cannot be interpreted reversely as this item is for interpreting the presence of a prohibited subsidy, not the presence of a benefit. Thus, an export credit program that confers a financial contribution, a benefit and specificity, could qualify as a prohibited subsidy. Fourth, ECAs not only have to maintain long-term account balance but also introduce additional measures to meet this long-term balance such as a clear and systematic premium system. Finally, export credit programmes that are not defined in item (j) of Annex I of the ASCM Agreement would not deemed as an prohibited export subsidy as long as the continued support of the programmes are not being forced.

Effects of Supplementing with Single or Multiple Trace Minerals on Growth Performance, Fecal Mineral Excretion and Nutrient Utilization in Pullets from 1 to 18 Weeks of Age

  • This study investigated whether supplemental Cu, Fe, Zn, and Mn are needed in a practical diet for pullets. Four hundred and twenty females of an egg-laying strain (1-d-old, Lohmann Brown Layer) were randomly distributed into 4 groups, consisting of 7 replicates of 15 birds each. During the 18-week experimental period, chicks were given three basal diets in sequence, each with single or multiple Mn, Zn and Cu supplementation to improve the mineral balance gradually. In the Control, no Mn, Zn, and Cu were added; in the single Mn supplemented group (sMn) Mn was added to 120, 60, and 60 mg/kg for 1-6, 7-12, and 13-18 weeks of age, respectively; in the multiple Mn and Zn supplemented group (mMnZn), Mn was added to 180, 90, and 90 mg/kg and Zn was added to 120, 105, and 105 mg/kg for 1-6, 7-12, and 13-18 weeks of age, respectively; in the multiple Mn, Zn, Cu supplemented group (mMnZnCu), Mn, Zn, and Cu were added to the same multiple of basal Fe concentration relative to NRC (1994) recommendations. Energy and protein metabolizability were determined by subtracting energy/protein intake by energy/protein excretion (from both feces and urine) and dividing by energy/protein intake. There were no statistically significant differences between groups in terms of feed intake, final body weight or tibia length throughout the experiment. Optimal growth performance was observed in the Control, while adding trace minerals to basal diets tended to result in decreased productive performance. Protein metabolizability was increased by mMnZn and mMnZnCu treatments, but energy metabolizability was not affected. Concentrations of Mn, Zn, Cu in excreta varied greatly related to dietary content, and the retentions of Cu, Fe, Zn and Mn were all increased due to the improvement of mineral balance. Based on these results, it is suggested that the concentrations of Cu, Fe, Zn and Mn in typical basal diets used in this study were adequate for normal growth for pullets from 1 to 18 weeks of age.

고등학교 엘리트 카약 선수들의 등속성 근기능·균형성·유연성 측정 및 평가 (Assessment of Isokinetic Muscle Function, Balance and Flexibility in Elite High School Kayakers)

  • 본 연구는 고등학교 엘리트 카약 선수들의 등속성 근기능, 균형성, 유연성, 신체 조성 등을 검사 및 진단하여 선수들의 경기력 향상과 부상 예방을 위한 훈련 방법론에 대한 조언을 하고자 실시되었다. 11명의 선수들을 대상으로, Biodex system IV, Biodex stabilizer system, Inbody 3.0, CNP-5403을 사용하여 근기능(peak torque, average power, work fatigue) 동적 균형 신체 성분 유연성 검사를 하였다. 선수들의 BMI 평균은 $22.57kg/m^2$, 체지방률은 10.90%, 체전굴은 16.95cm, 밸런스 점수는 좌우 각각 1.55, 1.49로 나타났다. S4, S5, S8, S10, S11은 어깨 근력과 파워 훈련이, S5, S6, S10, S11은 어깨 근지구력 훈련이 필요한 것으로 평가되었다. S5, S7, S8, S10, S11은 무릎 근력과 파워 훈련이, S1, S4, S5, S10은 무릎 근지구력 훈련이 요구되었다. S3, S10, S11은 손목 근지구력 강화 훈련이 필요했다. 추후 근기능 불균형으로 인한 경기력 저하와 잠재적 부상의 위험을 줄이기 위해선 획일화된 근력 훈련 프로그램을 지양하고, 정기적인 근기능 검사와 함께 개인별로 특화된 훈련 프로그램을 수립해야 한다.

Monensin Enriched Urea Molasses Mineral Block on Feed Intake, Nutrient Digestibility and Blood Glucose in Cattle Fed on Wheat Straw Based Diet

  • Twelve adult male crossbred (Sahiwal${\times}$Holstein Friesian) cattle were distributed into four groups of three each on body weight basis. Animals were given wheat straw as a basal diet. The animals of group I and II were supplemented with concentrate mixture and animals of group III and IV were supplemented with cold processed urea molasses mineral block (UMMB). Thirty mg monensin/day/animal was supplemented to the animals of group II and 35 ppm monensin were incorporated in the UMMB supplemented to the animals of group IV. Vit.A and D mixture was given to all the animals once a week. Dry matter (DM) intake (kg/d) through wheat straw was 19.0 percent higher in the UMMB (without monensin) supplemented group (group III) than those of the concentrate mixture (without monensin) supplemented group i.e. group I. Total DM intake (kg/d) was lower in the monensin supplemented groups than those of non-supplemented groups though differences were not statistically significant. Digestible dry matter, organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) intake were similar in all the groups. Average block consumption for 45 d period in the group III (0.95 kg/d) and group IV (0.84 kg/d) did not differ significantly. DM digestibility (%) was significantly (p<0.01) higher in the group II (58.9) as compared to the group I (52.7) and group III (54.0) but similar to the group IV (57.2). OM digestibility was also significantly (p<0.05) higher in the group II (63.2) as compared to that of the group I (54.9) but similar to the group III (57.8) and IV (59.2). Ether extract (EE) digestibility was significantly (p<0.01) higher in the group I (76.9) and II (80.3) as compared to the group III (59.87) and IV (55.77). Nitrogen free extract (NFE) digestibility was significantly (p<0.05) higher in the group II (62.38) as compared to that of the other groups. Crude protein (CP) and crude fibre (CF) digestibilities were not affected either due to UMMB or monensin. Nitrogen balance did also not differ significantly among the groups. However, Ca and P balance (g/d) in the group III (3.1, 1.3) and IV (3.0, 1.4) were significantly (p<0.01) higher than those of the group I (0.6, 0.2) and II (0.4, 0.3). Blood glucose (mg/100ml) was significantly (p<0.01) higher in the group II (65.2) and IV (65.2) as compared to the group I (55.2) and group III (53.9). Plasma urea-N level (mg/100 ml) in the group III (19.0) and IV (17.8) were significantly (p<0.01) higher than that of the group I (10.5) and II (12.3). So, monensin supplementation either with cold process UMMB or concentrate mixture did not show any additional effect on feed intake and digestibility but increases blood glucose level in adult cattle.

The Optimum Methionine to Methionine Plus Cystine Ratio for Growing Pigs Determined Using Plasma Urea Nitrogen and Nitrogen Balance

  • The objective of this study was to determine the optimum ratio of methionine to methionine plus cystine for growing pigs. A nitrogen balance trial was conducted using a total of 21 barrows (Large WhiteLandrace) over two replicates. The initial body weight was $20.36{\pm}1.22kg$ (mean${\pm}$SD) in the first replicate and $23.54{\pm}1.02kg$ (mean${\pm}$SD) in the second. For each replicate, the 21 pigs were randomly assigned to one of seven dietary treatments with three observations per treatment. The diets included a methionine and cystine-deficient basal diet with all other essential nutrients meeting nutrient requirements and six diets formulated with graded levels of DL-methionine (0.00, 0.03, 0.06, 0.10, 0.13, 0.16%) and $L-Cystine{\cdot}HCl{\cdot}H_2O$ (0.19, 0.15, 0.11, 0.07, 0.04, 0.00%). This resulted in ratios of methionine to methionine plus cystine of 41.3, 29.6, 35.3, 41.2, 46.0, 51.6 and 57.5%. Each experimental period lasted 12 days consisting of a seven-day adaptation period followed by a five-day total collection of urine and feces. During the collection period, pigs were fed 900 g/day for the first replicate and 1,200 g/day for the second replicate. The feed was provided in three equal portions at 0800, 1500, and 2200 h daily. Pigs had ad libitum access to water after feeding. There was a linear (p<0.01) and quadratic (p<0.01) effect on daily gain and feed conversion as the ratio of methionine to methionine plus cystine increased. Pigs receiving the diets providing a methionine to methionine plus cystine ratio of 51.6% had the best daily gain and feed conversion. Plasma urea nitrogen was also lowest for this treatment. Nitrogen retention increased (p<0.01) as the relative proportion of methionine increased up to 51.6% and then a downward trend occurred at 57.5%. The quadratic regression model, as well as one- and two- slope regression line models, were used to determine the optimum ratio of methionine to methionine plus cystine. Eliminating the 35.3% methionine to methionine plus cystine treatment resulted in $R^2$ values in excess of 0.92. The optimal ratio of methionine to methionine plus cystine was estimated to be 54.15% for nitrogen retention and 56.72% for plasma urea nitrogen.
