The scientific analysis of a 'F-51D Mustang Fighter'(Registered Cultural Heritage 666), one of the War Memorial of Korean collections, was carried out. The paint layer and canopy were discolored due to a constant outdoor exhibit. The results obtained through the scientific survey and analysis processes were intended to be used as basic data for the future dismantling and restoration of the fighter. The analysis results for the pigment components have confirmed red oxide of iron, Fe2O3 organic pigments, such as Cobalt Blue, phthalocyanine blue, etc., yellow PbCrO4, white TiO2, black Fe3O4, and gray Fe3O4 + TiO2. It has been also confirmed that Alkyd resin was mainly used for painting. The fighter's canopy was Poly methyl methacrylate(PMMA), and Al was detected as the main component of the fighter body, wings, and tails.
This work aims to obtain basic information for seed propagation of Hydrangea serrata for. acuminata. The germination percentage of the seeds taken on 15 November, 30 December, and 23 January was $90.0{\pm}4.16%$, $84.4{\pm}5.52%$, and $88.9{\pm}2.40%$, respectively. This suggest that seeds of Hydrangea serrata for. acuminata are non-dormant seeds. The optimum temperature for germination was $25^{\circ}C$ and light was necessary. Most of the growth parameters (shoot and leaf length, stem diameter, root length, no. of roots, T/R ratio, and fresh and dry wts.) were significantly greater at $25/20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ than at the other temperatures. Low T/R ratio at relatively cool temperatures (15 and $20^{\circ}C$) was caused by suppressed top growth. In light quality treatment, red light (RL) significantly enhanced stem elongation. The greatest photosynthetic pigments (total chl, chl a/b, and carotenoid) were observed in seedlings grown in blue light (BL), followed by seedlings grown in RL+BL. When blue light was added, higher pigment contents were found. Effect of plug cell size (50, 72, 128, 162 and 200 cells) on the growth of seedlings was investigated. The highest top growth was observed in seedlings grown in 50 cell trays, followed by seedlings grown in 72, 128, 162, and 200 cell trays. However, there was no significant differences between 162 and 200 cell trays. Especially, smaller size leaves were observed in seedlings grown in smaller cell trays (lower volume and high plant density).

In ornamental crops, the color and shape of flowers are one of the important traits. Generally, flower colors are determined by accumulating pigments such as carotenoids, flavonoids, and betalains. Among them, flavonoids are responsible for broad ranges of colors. Chrysanthemums are one of the most popular ornamental crops in the world, and there have been many efforts to change their flower color. In chrysanthemum flowers, cyanidin-based anthocyanin confers pink or red color, whereas terpenoid-based carotenoids are mainly responsible for yellow and green colors. However, blue colored chrysanthemums do not occur in nature. To date, there have been attempts to obtain blue or violet-colored chrysanthemum flowers through the introduction of a novel gene for accumulating delphinidin-based anthocyanins, while other studies have reported changing endogenous metabolites through the reconstruction of flavonoid biosynthesis. Since various transcription factors are involved in the regulation of flavonoid biosynthesis, it is important to understand not only the structural genes, but also the transcription factors required for the modification of flavonoid-based flower color. Therefore, in this paper, we describe the flavonoid biosynthetic pathway and its regulation, and review previous studies on the change in flower color through modification of flavonoid biosynthesis. This effort could be an important milestone in successfully achieving the modification of chrysanthemum flower color by means of plant biotechnology.
Since the biosynthetic production of indigo and indirubin normally reflects a difficult process including the toxicity of indole to microorganisms, only several bacterial strains have been exploited to produce indigo and indirubin from indole or its derivatives. P. savastanoi BCNU 106, which was a gram negative bacterium, was isolated and tolerant to 10% (v/v) toluene. The indole tolerance level of P. savastanoi BCNU 106 was as high as 160 mg/ml when toluene or p-xylene was added to the medium to 20% by volume. P. savastanoi BCNU 106 grown in a two-phase culture system containing indole(100 mg/ml) and P-xylene (0.2 ml/ml) produced P-xylene-soluble pigments, blue indigo and purple indirubin. Of the conditious tried, the production of indigo and indirubin was found only when P. savastanoi BCNU 106 was grown in the two-phase system overlaid with the organic solvents with appropriate polarity. This study may illustrate that the isolated extremophile P. savastanoi could be used in the microbial conversion process of the industrial potentials.
Changing concepts in fishery science increasingly are recognizing depletion of traditional stocks, utilization of alternate(non-traditional) species, demand for high quality products, and a total resource utilization approach. Innovative practices are occurring in fisheries processing wherein solid and liquid discharges are no longer treated as 'waste,' but rather as valuable feedstocks for recovery of a variety of value-added ('value enhanced') by-products. Among these are protein hydrolysates, soluble proteins and amino acids, proteolytic enzymes, flavor and flavor extracts, pigments, and biopolymers such as chitosan. Properties and applications of this deacetylated derivative of chitin are noted. Crustacean processing by-products are discussed in terms of their serving as materials for generation of natural flavors and flavor extracts, and products such as fish sauces using contemporary enzymatic techniques. Various food and feed applications of fisheries processing by-products are illustrated with increased usage seen in formulated diets for an expanding aquaculture market. Examples are given of aquaculture becoming increasingly significant in global fisheries resource projections. Critical issues in the international seafood industry Include those of seafood quality, processing quality assurance (HACCP), and recognition of the nutritional and health-related properties of fisheries products. A variety of current seafood processing research is discussed, including that of alternate fish species for surimi manufacture and formulation of value-added seafood products from crawfish and blue crab processing operations. Increasing emphasis is being placed on international aspects of global fisheries and the role of aquaculture in such considerations. Coupled with the need for the aquatic food industry to develop innovative seafood products for the 21st century is that of total resource utilization. Contemporary approaches in seafood processing recognize the need to discard the traditional concept of processing 'waste' and adapt a more realistic, and economically sound, approach of usable by-products for food and feed application. For example, in a period of declining natural fishery resources it is no longer feasible to discard fish frames following fillet removal when a significant amount of residual valuable flesh is present that can be readily recovered and properly utilized in a variety of mince-based formulated seafood products.
Anthocyanins are water soluble plant pigments which are responsible for the blue, red, pink, violet colors in several plant organs such as flowers, fruits, leaves and roots. In recent years, anthocyanin-rich foods have been favored as dietary supplements and health care products due to diverse biological activities of anthocyanins including antioxidant, anti-allergic, anti-diabetic, anti-microbial, anti-cancer and preventing cardiovascular disease. High-performance countercurrent chromatography (HPCCC) coupled with reversed-phase medium pressure liquid chromatography (RP MPLC) method was applied for the rapid and efficient isolation of cyanidin 3-glucoside (C3G) and peonidin 3-glucoside (P3G) from black rice (Oryza sativa L., Poaceae). The crude black rice extract (500 mg) was subjected to HPCCC using two-phase solvent system composed of tert-butyl methyl ether/n-butanol/ acetonitrile/0.01% trifluoroacetic acid (TBME/B/A/0.01% TFA, 1 : 3 : 1 : 5, v/v, flow rate - 4.5 mL/min, reversed phase mode) to give enriched anthocyanin extract (37.4 mg), and enriched anthocyanin extract was sequentially chromatographed on RP-MPLC to yield C3G (16.5 mg) and P3G (8.7 mg). The recovery rate and purity of isolated C3G were 76.0% and 98.2%, respectively, and those of P3G were 58.3% and 96.3%, respectively. The present study indicates that HPCCC coupled with RP-MPLC method is more rapid and efficient than multi-step conventional column chromatography for the separation of anthocyanins.
This study was carried out to how the effects of storage temperature of garlic bulbs, pH and temperature of garlic puree on its color change. Color change was severely appeared in puree made of garlics stored at pH 4.0, 2$^{\circ}C$ and pH 4.0, 25$^{\circ}C$. The color of garlic puree was changed from green to blue during storage. The yellowing occured by the oxidation at high temperature of puree. Garlic puree absorbed the wavelengths of 486nm. 580nm, and 656nm. The precursors of pigments produced by enzymatic reaction were seemed to be the reasons of color change because there was no my change of color in puree when the enzymes including alliinase were inactivated. However, the color changes of puree at low storage temperature should be studied further in the future.
The modified simultaneous differential staining technique, which enables double staining of cartilage and bones, needs to be improved to prevent soft tissues from being damaged during the staining process. Key factors influencing the extent to which soft tissues are damaged include the fixative used, macerating time, potassium hydroxide concentration, incubation temperature and the removal of skin from specimens. Here we describe a protocol that enables the hardening of tissues during bleaching and maceration. We also describe a method for objectively measuring rates of cartilage and bone growth. The use of formalin as a fixative rendered soft tissues more rigid due to the resulting chemical bonds formed between proteins. Blotted specimens were immersed in 1% potassium hydroxide (KOH) and incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ for 1 day (smaller specimens) or 2-3 days (larger specimens). The 1% KOH solution was also used as the diluent solution for the subsequent immersion in a graded series of 30%, 50%, 70%, 90%, 100% glycerol solutions, a procedure that made soft tissues even more transparent and hardened. It was not necessary to remove the skin of specimens shorter than 2 cm, since the macerating solution could easily penetrate their thin skin layer and continuously remove those pigments hindering visibility. Since excessive osmosis is another factor that can damage soft tissues in the macerating process by causing the rupture of those cells not able to withstand the osmotic pressure, here it was minimized by balancing the salt concentration between the interior and exterior of cells with the addition of 0.9% sodium chloride (NaCl) in the macerating solution. Finally, to determine the proportions of cartilage and bone growth, photographs of the stained specimens were taken with a dissecting microscope and sections corresponding to the cartilage and bones were cut out from the printed pictures and weighed. Our results show that this method is suitable for the objective evaluation of bone and cartilage growth.
$NiAl_2O_4$ nanoparticle was synthesized by a reverse micelle processing for inorganic pigment. $Ni(NO_3)_2{\cdot}6H_2O$ and $Al(NO_3)_3{\cdot}9H_2O$ were used for the precursor in order to synthesize $NiAl_2O_4$ nanoparticles. The aqueous solution, which consisted of a mixing molar ratio of Ni/Al, was 1:2 and heat treated at $800{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$ for 2h. The average size and distribution of synthesized $NiAl_2O_4$ powders are in the range of 10-20 nm and narrow, respectively. The average size of the synthesized $NiAl_2O_4$ powders increased with an increasing water-to-surfactant molar ratio and heating temperature. The crystallinity of synthesized $NiAl_2O_4$ powder increased with an increasing heating temperature. The synthesized $NiAl_2O_4$ powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis(XRD), a field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), and a color spectrophotometer. The properties of synthesized powders were affected as a function such as a molar ratio and heating temperature. Results indicate that synthesis using a reverse miclle processing is a favorable process to obtain $NiAl_2O_4$ spinels at low temperatures. The procedure performed suggests that this new synthesis route for producing these oxides has the advantage of being fast and simple. Colorimetric coordinates indicate that the pigments obtained exhibit blue colors.
The Nectar Ritual Painting(Jeung7551) in National Museum of Korea is estimated to have been produced in the 16th century. Ezimagodo who is the head priest of Ruganji in Kyoto, Japan donated this painting in 2010. Overall, damages were serious, such as missing, staining, folding, insects of the face and mounting silk, therefore, it need to conservation treatment. The treatment of conservation in painting was removing surface stains and repairing missing area. It was mounted by following the original form. The analysis result of textile in mounting and support fiber used silk and hemp in microscope. Pigments in paint were divided into six color types. This painting was used that vermilion(cinnabar) and red lead for red color, litharge(massicot) and gold for yellow color, lead white for white color, malachite for green color, azurite for blue color, and carbon black(chinese ink) for black color.
