The effects of low-level laser therapy in patients with wrist pain: is this Mickey Mouse science?

  • Objective: Low level laser treatment (LLLT) is widely used in physical therapy practice. It is combined with physical therapy or LLLT alone. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of LLLT on patients' perception of general wrist pain. Design: Longitudinal study. Methods: Forty-eight subjects with wrist pain who were in the age range of 18-70 years old were examined. The subjects were asked, via an interview and a visual analog scale, to grade their wrist pain. They were asked to rotate their wrists through full range of motion and the angle at which any pain occurred was assessed. Each subject was then exposed to one of the following: 1) treatment with an infrared laser with the power turned off (placebo), 2) treatment with an infrared therapeutic laser, 3) treatment with a red therapeutic laser, 4) treatment with an ultraviolet laser, 5) treatment with a blue laser, 6) treatment with a Mickey Mouse flashlight. The duration of the treatment was 3 sessions in 3 days. Results: The results of the experiments showed that while pain was reduced both immediately after and the next day after laser therapy (p<0.05), there was no significant difference between the laser groups and the placebo group. However, the Mickey Mouse flashlight treatment groups had a greater range of motion than the laser groups (p<0.05). Conclusions: While pain was reduced in all laser groups, it was probably a placebo effect. The Mickey Mouse flashlight group probably received benefit from the heat of the flashlight.

The Three-wavelength PR3+:YLF Laser at 604 nm 607 nm and 640 nm with Fabry-Perot Etalon

  • A three-wavelength $Pr^{3+}:YLF$ laser at 604 nm, 607 nm and 640 nm simultaneously output by Fabry-Perot (F-P) etalon has been obtained. A 444 nm blue laser diode is used for pumping the $Pr^{3+}:YLF$ crystal, and a 0.1 mm F-P etalon is inserted in the resonator to select wavelength. The theoretical model of three-wavelength $Pr^{3+}:YLF$ laser is established, by adjusting the tilt angle of the etalon, the transmittances of the different wavelengths can be controlled, and the threshold values can be made to equalize by controlling the loss among different wavelengths. In the experiment, when the tilt angle of etalon is $9^{\circ}$ and the optimized length of resonator is 48 mm, the total output power of 25 mW at the three-wavelength is achieved at incident pump power of 7.5 W.

Effects of Flos Sophora japonica Extract on the Changes of Cerebral Hemodynamics

  • The purpose of this study was to measure the changes of regional cerebral blood flow(rCBF) and blood pressure(BP) in rats, following the intravenous injection of Flos Sophora japonica L.(FSJ) water extract. The measurement was continually monitored by Laser-Doppler Flowmeter and pressure transducer in anaesthetized adult Sprague-Dawley rats for 2 hours to 2 hours and a half through the data acquisition system. FSJ increased the changes of rCBF in rat significantly. The rCBF of FSJ did not change by pretreated propranolol, atropine, L-NNA($N^G$-nitro-L-argininine) and indomethacin. But the rCBF of Flos Sophora japonica L. was increased by pretreated methylene blue. FSJ decreased the changes of BP, significantly. The BP of FSJ did not change by pretreated propranolol, atropine, L-NNA and indomethacin. But the BP FSJ was decreased by pretreated methylene blue. There results indicated that FSJ can increase the rCBF and decrease the BP, that is related to guanylyl cyclase activity.

청훈화담탕가미방이 국소뇌혈유량 및 평균혈압에 미치는 작용기전 연구(IV) (The Mechanism Study of Cheonghunhwadam-tang Gamypang on the Regional Cerebral Blood Flow and Mean Arterial Blood Pressure in Rats(IV))

  • Cheonghunhwadam-tang(CHT) have been used in oriental medicine for many centuries as a therapeutic agent of vertigo by wind, fire and phlegm. CTG was CHT adding Aurantii FructusㆍGastrodae Rhizoma. CTG was significantly increased regional cerebral blood f1ow(rCBF) in a dose-dependent, and CTG was decreased mean arterial blood pressure(MABP) compared with normal MABP(100%) in a low dosage, but was increased MABP in a dose-dependent, was aliked with normal MABP in a high-dosage. Therefore, purpose of this Study was to investigate experimental mechanism of CHTAG on the cerebral hemodynamics(rCBF, MABP) in rats. The changes of rCBF and MABP were determinated by Laser-Doppler Flowmetry(LDF). The results were as follows ; Pretreatment with indomethacin(3㎎/㎏, i.v.) was significantly inhibited CTG induced increase of rCBF and pretreated with propranolol(3㎎/㎏, i.v.) was inhibited CTG induced increase of rCBF, but pretreatment with methylene blue(10㎍/㎏, i.v) was increased CTG induced increase of rCBF. Pretreatment with indomethacin was decreased CTG induced increase of MABP, but pretreatment with propranolol and methylene blue were increased CTG induced increase of MABP. This results suggest that the mechanism of CTG is mediated by cyclooxygenase.

KrF 레이저를 이용한 희박연소화염과 매연화염에서의 NO계측 (NO measurements in lean and soot flame using KrF laser)

  • KrF 레이저를 여기광원으로 사용하여 희박연소화염과 매연화염에서 각각 청색편이된 NO형광 신호를 측정하였다. 두 화염에 대해서 여기광의 세기와 NO 첨가량에 따른 NO 신호와 배경잡음의 세기를 계측하고 그 결과를 정성적으로 분석하였다. 또한 희박연소화염에서 위치에 따른 NO 신호의 세기도 관측하였다.

  • The relative intensity noise (RIN) characteristics in 405 nm blue laser diodes grown on wurtzite AlGaInN multiple quantum well structures were investigated using the rate equations with the quantum Langevin noise model. The device parameters were extracted from the optical gain properties of the MQW active region using the self-consistent numerical method developed for calculating the multiband Hamiltonian in the strained wurtzite crystal. These methods have been applied to laser diodes for various conditions including the external feedback and the high frequency current injection.

  • Visual observation and subjective assessments lack the objective evaluation of laser therapy effects of the epidermal pigmented lesions. In this study, we proposed the two methods; One is CIE(Commission International d'Eclairage) $L^*,\;a^*,\;b^*$ coordinate system($L^*$ : brightness, $a^*$ : red(+) $\sim$green(-) content, $b^*$ : yellow(+) $\sim$blue(-) content), and the other is the relative color difference measurement. And we applied these two methods for quantitative evaluation of the laser therapy effects.

  • Si nanocrstallites on p-tyre (100) Si substrate have been fabricated by pulsed laser deposition technique using a Nd:YAG laser with the wavelength of 355, 532 and 1064 nm. The base vacuum in the chamber was down to $10^{-5}$ Torr and the pressure of the gas during deposition was varied from 1 to 3 Torr. After deposition, Si nanocrystallites have been annealed at $N_2$ gas. Nitrogen have been used as ambient gases. Strong blue and green luminescence from Si nanocrystallites has been observed in room temperature by photoluminescence and its peak energies shift to green when the wavelength is increased from 355-1064 nm

  • 본 연구의 목적은 헬륨의 순도가 셀레늄증기 레이저에서의 출력특성과 광이득에 미치는 영향을 측정, 비교해보는 것이다. 헬륨의 순도는 특수 헬륨필터로써 개선하였다. 본 측정에서는 개개의 선들이 복굴절필터에 의해서 선택 되어졌다. 대부분의 선들이 헬륨필터를 사용한 레이저에서 더 높은 output-coupling 출력과 소신호 이득을 보여 주고, 특히 강력한 선들(497.6 nm, 499.3 nm, 506.9 nm, 517.6 nm, 522.8 nm, 530.5 nm)과 청색선(460.4 nm, 464.8 nm)및 적색선(644.4 nm, 649.1 nm)에서 현저히 더 높은 값을 보여 준다.

백색 레이저 조명용 Y3Al5O12:Ce3+,Pr3+ 단결정 특성 (Properties of Y3Al5O12:Ce3+,Pr3+ Single Crystal for White Laser Lightings)

  • $Y_3A_{l5}O_{12}:Ce^{3+},Pr^{3+}$ single crystal phosphor was prepared by floating zone method. single crystal was confirmed to have a Ia-3d (230) space group of cubic structure and showed regular morphology. The optical properties, single crystal exhibited a emission band from green, yellow wide wavelength and 610nm, 640nm red wavelength vicinity. The luminance maintenance rate was decreased by phonon with increasing temperature, but high luminance is maintained more than powder phosphor. In addition, $Y_3A_{l5}O_{12}:Ce^{3+},Pr^{3+}$ single crystal phosphor was applied to a high power blue laser diode, we implemented high power white laser lightings. and it was confirmed that thermal properties over time, due to the effective heat transfer of complete crystal structure. We confirmed that excellent radiant heat properties than powder phosphor was applied to a high power white laser diode.
