  • Objectives : The practice of bloodletting therapy has taken place for several millenia all over the world. The therapy is still one of the most popular oriental treatments in Korea. This paper studies bloodletting therapy in Huangdineijing to provide the Korean Medicine doctors with knowledge of the therapy to effectively utilize it in their clinics. Methods : The author studied all of the diseases treated by bloodletting therapy in Huangdineijing, and placed them into three categories: the visceral and bowel diseases, the meridian diseases, and miscellaneous diseases. The author reviewed reference documents that show clinical experiences of using the therapy and the results from the research on the therapy's therapeutic dynamics. Results : The treatment principals such as diagnostic methods, meridian points selection, acupuncture methods, and tools for the bloodletting therapy were provided. Most of the diseases treated by the therapy were identified by the visceral pattern identification or meridian pattern identification except miscellaneous diseases. The characteristics of the diseases treated by the therapy were studied and the diseases were placed into categories such as fever, pain, qi counterflow, first-aid, mental disease, and deep-seated disease. Theoretical basis of the mechanism of bloodletting therapy was drawn from several researches and a number of clinical theses related to bloodletting therapy. Conclusions : Results of this study on bloodletting therapy in Huangdineijing could be a useful knowledge for the Korean medicine doctors to be utilized their clinics. Future studies on this type of therapy should be performed to identify the diseases that may be effectively treated by bloodletting therapy.

A stratified random sample of Korean medical doctors is drawn for the telephone interviews. We choose a bound on the error of estimation equal to 3.2 percentage, and the sample size is 321 for the national sample. We develop a questionnaire for telephone interviews. We carefully design the questionnaire to minimize non-sampling errors by using the focus group activities and the pretest. We give the details of the results based on the sample design. Also, we present some socialdemograhpic characteristics for the samples. Telephone interviews with them were conducted by the well-trained interviewers of College of Korean Medicine student from 11th May 2006 to 17th May 2006. Results : 1. • Effects of acupuncture at Taekjung and Ungyo($GV_{28}$) bloodletting on serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) activity, glutamic pyruvic transaminase activity(GPT), total Protein, Albumin, Alkalin Phosphatase(ALP), ${\gamma}$-GT, lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), total cholesterol and triglyceride were determined. 1) In the Ungyo bloodletting group, GOT, GPT, ALP, ${\gamma}$-GT and LDH activity showed a tendency to decrease compared to those of $CCl_4$ only group and Taekjung acupuncture group. 2) Serum albumin content showed a tendency decrease by treatment of $CCl_4$ and to increase by treatment of Ungyo bloodletting. 3) The values of serum total protein, total cholesterol and triglyceride showed no significant difference among all the treatment groups. 4) All the biological values showed no significant difference between the $CCl_4$ only group and Taekjung acupuncture group except the values of albumin. Results from this study indicate that the Ungyo bloodletting showed the possibility of liver function recovery in liver-harmed rats by $CCl_4$.

  • The texts of "Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經)" explains Hakjil(瘧疾) in detail, especially in the "Jahak(刺瘧)" chapter, where bloodletting treatment is applied in many cases. The following paper categorized and organized Hakjil(瘧疾) cases treated by bloodletting methods, then analyzed applicable subjects and appropriate time for the procedure based on the texts. Afterwards, the mechanism for the cessation of Hakjil(瘧疾) seizures was examined. The findings of this research are as follows. 1. In the contents of "Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經)", the appropriate time for acupuncture and bloodletting procedure is when Hakjil(瘧疾) seizures start to present themselves. 2. When a seizure takes place as a symptom of the body getting rid of the Hak(瘧) pathogen, Yanggi(陽氣) rushes to the locus of the pathogen, causing congestion of Gi(氣) and Blood(血) resulting in static blood[瘀血]. Therefore, bloodletting at the time of seizure initiation helps the flow of Gi(氣) and Blood(血), preventing the rush of Yanggi(陽氣). This is a restoration of the balancing function of Eum(陰) and Yang(陽), which indicates that bloodletting not only promotes smooth flow of Gi(氣) and Blood(血), but extends its effects to mental functions that balances Eum(陰) and Yang(陽). 3. Although Hakjil(瘧疾) seizures are presented in terms of Gi(氣) and Blood(血) in symptoms such as chill and fever[寒熱], static blood[瘀血], pain, etc., a fundamental disturbance in mental functions that control cold and heat seems to be present.
