  • Several epidemiological studies suggested that arsenic exposure was strongly correlated with the development of cardiovascular disease such as hypertension. In order to examine whether arsenic affects vasomotor tone in blood vessels, we investigated the effect of arsenic on agonist-induced vasorelaxation using the isolated rat aortic rings in in vitro organ bath system. • This study is attempted to correct an error of electronic blood pressure meter with an optical sensor. In general, for a hospitalized patient, ECG, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and respiration are basically measured to monitor the patient's condition. Opening of a blood vessel after it is occluded by pressurizing the cuff influences the blood flow of peripheral blood vessels as well as oscillation changes in the cuff. Blood vessels are occluded and peripheral blood flow disappears at cuff pressure above the examinee's blood pressure, while blood vessels are opened and peripheral blood flow appears again at cuff pressure under the examinee's blood pressure. Then Disappear-Appear Point Length(DAPL) of peripheral blood flow can be judged with the signal of peripheral blood flow, thus is available as a factor of error correction for electronic blood pressure meter. Also, systolic or diastolic blood pressure can be corrected with Appear-Point-Pressure(APP) of cuff pressure at a point where blood flow occurs and Appear-Maximum Pressure(AMP) of cuff pressure at the maximum amplitude point of peripheral blood flow after peripheral blood flow appears again. For verification, 27 examinees were selected, and their blood value was obtained through experimental procedure of 4 stages including induction of blood pressure change. The examinees were divided into two groups of experimental group and control group, regression analysis was conducted for experimental group, and correction of a blood pressure error was verified with optical signal by applying the regression equation calculated in experimental group to control group. As an experimental result, mean of the whole measurement errors was 5mmHg or more, which did not meet the standard fur blood pressure meter. As a result of correcting blood pressure measurements with data of DAPL, APP, and AMP as drawn out of PPG signal, systolic blood pressure, mean blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure were $-0.6{\pm}4.4mmHg,\;-1.0{\pm}3.9mmHg$ and $-1.3{\pm}5.4mmHg$, respectively, indicating that mean of the whole measurement errors was greatly improved, and standard deviation was decreased.

  • In this study, a novel hierarchical approach is investigated to extract coronary vessel from X-ray angiogram. First, we propose to combine Decimation-free Directional Filter Bank (DDFB) and Homographic Filtering (HF) in order to enhance X-ray coronary angiographic image for segmentation purposes. Because the blood vessel ensures that blood flows in only one direction on vessel branch, the DDFB filter is suitable to be used to enhance the vessels at different orientations and radius. In the combination with HF filter, our method can simultaneously normalize the brightness across the image and increases contrast. Next, a coarse-to-fine strategy for iterative segmentation based on Otsu algorithm is applied to extract the main coronary vessels in different sizes. Furthermore, we also propose a new approach to segment very small vessels. Specifically, based on information of the main extracted vessels, we introduce a new method to extract junctions on the vascular tree and level of nodes on the tree. Then, the window based segmentation is applied to locate and extract the small vessels. Experimental results on our coronary X-ray angiography dataset demonstrate that the proposed approach can outperform standard method and attain the accuracy of 71.34%.

  • In order to investigate the pharmacological properties of ι-muscone, effects of ι-muscone and musk were studied on the cardiovascular system with various experimental models. In isolated rat aorta, ι-muscone and musk made the relaxation of blood vessels in maximum contractile response to phenylephrine (10$^{-6}$ M) in endothelium-containing rings of the rat aorta, but not in endothelium-denuded rings. However, ι-muscone and musk in the presence of the inhibitor of NO synthase and guanylate cyclase did not make the relaxation of blood vessels. In spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), ι-muscone and musk slightly reduced blood pressure but significantly decreased heart rate. In the isolated perfused rat hearts, ι-muscone and musk did not affect significantly on LVDP, contractile force, coronary flow and (-dp/dt)/(+dp/dt). These results suggest that ι-muscone and musk have weak cardiovascular effects with relaxation of blood vessel and decrease of heart rate, but without significant cardiac functions.

  • The anomalous connection of umbilical vessels to the heart is rare and has not yet been reported in the international scientific literature. Herein, we report the case of a newborn who was diagnosed with an anomalous connection of the umbilical vessels to the left ventricle. These anomalous vessels were functionally open for 2 weeks, and cellulitis was present in the area of the blood vessels connected to the skin. We performed division of these abnormal vessels and removal of the skin lesion.

  • Vascular changes in the periodontal ligament of the rat incisors following application of experimental orthodontic forces were examined by the India ink perfusion method. 57 rats were used for this experiment. The rats were divided into experimental group (54 rats) and control group (3 rats). 54 experimental rats were divided into group I (27 rats) and group II (27 rats). The right and left upper incisors of group. I and group II rats were separated distally with forces of 20gm, 70gm respectively. The vascular changes of periodontal ligament were observed histologically by means of light microscope after 1, 2 and 3 days of tooth movement and 1,3,5,8,14, and 21 days after removal of orthodontic force. The results were as follows; 1. After one day of tooth movement, occlusion of blood vessels, hyalinization of periodontal ligament and resorption of alveolar bone adjacent to the alveolar crest on pressure side were observed. Above the tissue changes on the pressure side of group II were more severe than those of group I. Especially, septal bone of group II was separated after 2 days of tooth movement. 2. In tension zones, periodontal space was widened and periodontal fibers were orientated in the direction of puil. The blood vessels of periodontal ligament were distended. New bone deposition was seen along the inner surface of the alveolus after 2 days of tooth movement. 3. After 3 days of tooth movement, deposition of new bone was seen along the periosteal surface of alveolar bone on pressure side, progressing with increasing after removal of orthodontic force. Remodelling of the new bone was occurred 5 days after removal of orthodontic force. 4. 3 days after removal of orthodontic force, invasion of blood vessels into the marginal periodontal ligament on pressure side was observed clearly and the vessels below the epithelial attachment were increased. 5. After removal of orthodontic force, hyalinized structures disappeared concomittantly with an invasion of blood vessels from the neighboring periodontal ligament. 14 days after removal of orthodontic force, the vessels in the periodontal ligament of group I were finished the vascular rearrangement. 21 days after removal of orthodontic force, the vessels in the periodontal ligament of group II were finished the vascular rearrangement.

  • Cardiovascular system is the primary organ to develop and reach a functional state, which underscores the essential role of the vasculature in the developing embryo. The vasculature is a highly specialized organ that functions in a number of key physiological works including the carrying of oxygen and nutrients to tissues. It is closely involved in the formation of heart, and hence it is essential for survival during the hatching period. The expression of genes involved during vascular development in the olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) in the days after hatching is not fully understood. Therefore, we examined the expression patterns of genes activated during the development of flounder. Microscopic observations showed that formation of blood vessels is related to the expression of the vimentin gene. Also, the temporal expression patterns of this vimentin-like gene in the developmental stages and in the normal tissues of olive flounder. The purpose of this study was to examine the expression patterns of vimentin in normal tissues of the olive flounder and during the development of the vascular system in newly hatched olive flounders and HIF-1 plays a vital role in the formation of blood vessels during development. Vimentin expression was strong at the beginning of the development of blood vessels, and was present throughout all developmental stages. Our findings have important implications with respect to the roles of vimentin and HIF-1 in the development and evolution of the first blood vessels in olive flounder. Further studies are required to elucidate the vimentin-mediated hypoxic response signal transduction and to decipher the functional role of vimentin in developmental stages.

  • This research was conducted to compare differences in colon cancer lymphatic vessel invasion (LVI) with D2-40 antibody labeling and regular HE staining, blood vessel invasion (BVI) with CD34 antibody labeling and HE staining and to assess the possibility of using D2-40-LVI/CD34-BVI in combination for predicting stage II colon cancer prognosis and guiding adjuvant chemotherapy.Anti-D2-40 and anti-CD34 antibodies were applied to tissue samples of 220 cases of stage II colon cancer to label lymphatic vessels and small blood vessels, respectively. LVI and BVI were assessed and multivariate COX regression analysis was performed for associations with colon cancer prognosis. Regular HE staining proved unable to differentiate lymphatic vessels from blood vessels, while D2-40 selectively labeled lymphatic endothelial cell cytosol and CD34 was widely expressed in large and small blood vessels of tumors as well as normal tissues. Compared to regular HE staining, D2-40-labeling for LVI and CD34-labeling for BVI significantly increased positive rate (22.3% vs 10.0% for LVI, and 19.1% vs 9.1% for BVI). Multivariate analysis indicated that TNM stage, pathology tissue type, post-surgery adjuvant chemotherapy, D2-40-LVI, and CD34-BVI were independent factors affecting whole group colon cancer prognosis, while HE staining-BVI, HE staining-LVI were not significantly related. When CD34-BVI/D2-40-LVI were used in combination for detection, the risk of death for patients with two or one positive results was 5.003 times that in the LVI(-)&BVI(-) group (95% CI 2.365 - 9.679). D2-40 antibody LVI labeling and CD34 antibody BVI labeling have higher specificity and accuracy than regular HE staining and can be used as molecular biological indicators for prognosis prediction and guidance of adjuvant chemotherapy for stage II colon cancer.

  • The blood flow characteristics have been closely related to various cardiovascular diseases, it is very important to predict them accurate enough in an efficient way. Thus, this paper proposes a one-dimensional spectral element model for the blood flow through blood vessels. The spectral element model is formulated by using the variational method. The nonlinear terms in spectral element model are all treated as the pseudo-force and an iterative solution method is applied in the frequency domain.
