  • Diagnostics membranes which were made of polyacrylonitrile were prepared for the measurements of blood glucose concentration. Final absorbances at 680nm through polyacrylonitrile diagnostic membranes were measured at various concentration of glucose in blood. It was found that the end-point results of varing absorbance values as time (K/S) had a linear relationship toward the blood glucose concentration. The effects of possible constituents in human blood on the glucose concentration measurements were examined. As a result, most of the chemicals did not affect seriously on the blood glucose measurements.

  • Blood glucose curves in the management for diabetic patients have several limitations including intermittent assessment of blood glucose concentration, hospitalization, patient restraint, and repeated phlebotomy. The aim of this study was to apply and evaluate a wireless continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS) in healthy dogs. Subcutaneous interstitial glucose concentrations in 7 dogs were continuously monitored and recorded by wireless CGMS. During induced hyperglycemia, the interstitial glucose concentrations were compared with whole blood glucose concentrations measured by glucometer and serum glucose concentrations measured by automated chemistry analyzer, respectively. There were no significant differences among interstitial, whole blood and serum glucose concentrations. The interstitial glucose concentrations had a good correlation to serum glucose concentrations. The real-time wireless CGMS is a valuable tool for monitoring system of glucose concentrations in dogs. Use of the CGMS for diabetic patients will provide accurate information over traditional blood glucose curves.

  • A blood-glucose meter is one of the in vitro diagnostic devices to measure and control the glucose concentration of diabetics. In order to measure the glucose level in the blood, the common method is to measure the amount of electrons, that is, the output current generated by glucose oxidation after a blood sample is inserted into the test strip containing an enzyme. The hematocrit is an obstacle in measuring accurate blood glucose concentration. This paper deals with the design and implementation of a blood-glucose meter to correct the hematocrit interference. We propose a sequential method which measures impedance using the alternating current and then measures glucose in the blood using the direct current. In addition, this paper introduces how to use commercial glucose strips based on the proposed system. Finally, we conducted the performance evaluation of the proposed system by comparing the measured current and impedance with those of the references. As a result, the standard deviation of the current measurement is approximately 0.6nA and the impedance measurement error for measuring the hematocrit is approximately within 1%. The proposed system will improve the accuracy of the conventional blood-glucose meter by reducing the hematocrit interference.

  • A new type of diagnostic membranes based on methoxyethoxy and trifluoroethoxy co-substituted polyphosphazene has been prepared to measure blood glucose level of diabetics. Final absorbances at 680 nm through activated polyphosphazene membranes were measured at various concentration of glucose in plasma or blood. The end-point results of varing absorbance values as time (K/S) was found to have a linear relationship toward the blood glucose concentration. The effects of substitution rates with hydrophilic groups and hydrophobic groups on the measurements of glucose concentration were studied. Dose-response slope (DRS) values between glucose concentration and K/S values increased as the hydrophilic substitution rates increased. However, in more than 30% of the substitution rates, it was difficult to measure exact concentration level of glucose because DRS increased rapidly.

  • Polyurethane diagnostic membranes were prepared to measure blood glucose level of diagnostics. Final absorbances at 680 nm through activated polyurethane membranes were measured at various concentration of glucose in blood. The end-point results of varing absorbance values as time (K/S) was found to have a linear relationship toward the blood glucose concentration. The effects of hematocrit on the glucose concentration measurements were examined. In low hematocrit, dose-response slope (DRS) values between gluose concentration and K/S values did not show the big differences compared to those in plasma. However, in high hematocrit (more than 40%) DRS values were considerably decreased.

  • The correlation between the plasma insulin, and glucose concentration was studied in healthy Korean adults consisting of 20 males and 22 females of 16 to 38 years of age. The blood samples of above subjects were obtained through cubital vein at arbitrary times, during their usual working hours. Plasma insulin was assayed by means of double antibody system of radioimnmunoassy technics, and blood glucose was determined by means of Van Slyke-Folch method. Results were as follows: 1. There were no differences in the blood sugar levels in relation to the plasma insulin concentration either by sex or age. 2. In the case, when the plasma insulin concentration was within $200m{\mu}D/ml$, the correlation between the insulin, and glucose concentration existed, the ratio of which was expressed as; Plasma glucose concentration(mg/dI)=$91.9+0.08{\times}Insulin$ concentration r=0.62 3. Insulinogenic index was 12.4%, which was somewhat higher than other reports. 4. It is suggested that the correlation between plasma insulin and glucose concentration could be determined at arbitrary times instead of fasting times.

  • This study was conducted to determine effects of salinomycin (SL) on feeding-induced changes in glucose kinetics and blood VFA concentrations in sheep fed a high-roughage diet. Four sheep were fed the diet with or without 20 mg/kg diet of SL once daily for 21 d. Glucose entry and utilization rates were determined during the prefeeding and 3 h postfeeding periods, using a [$^{13}C_6$]glucose dilution method and non-steady state equations. Ruminal characteristics and concentrations of blood VFA, plasma glucose and insulin were also measured during the same periods. A feeding-induced increase in ruminal total VFA concentration tended to be inhibited (p<0.10) with SL, although ruminal pH was unaffected (p>0.10) with SL or by feeding. Salinomycin decreased (p<0.05) acetate proportion and increased (p<0.05) propionate proportion in the rumen, but did not modify these changes in response to feeding (p>0.10). A feeding-induced increase in blood acetate concentration was attenuated (p<0.05) with SL. Salinomycin tended to increase (p<0.10) blood propionate concentration without modifying its response patterns to feeding (p>0.10). Plasma concentrations of glucose or insulin were unaffected (p>0.10) with SL. Salinomycin tended to enhance (p<0.10) glucose entry and utilization rates. Feeding also enhanced (p<0.01) both rates, whereas their interactive effect was not detected (p>0.10). We conclude that SL possibly enhances whole body glucose entry and utilization with an increase in blood propionate concentration in sheep given a high-roughage diet, although SL does not appear to affect their responses to feeding.

  • In this paper, we developed a paper blood glucose sensor that can minimize the effect of hematocrit. The paper blood glucose sensor has the advantage of being very simple in its production process as it is manufactured with only three printing processes on the top of the paper substrate. This glucose sensor consists of a total of six electrodes, including blood glucose measurement electrodes, hematocrit measurement electrodes, strip detection electrodes, and blood detection electrodes. A paper blood glucose sensor measures hematocrit with electrodes formed on the same sensor substrate when measuring blood glucose concentration, and compensates for the effect of hematocrit in real time to enable accurate blood glucose measurement.
