  • In this paper, we investigate on the techniques for still image compression based on the wavelet transform, which will be adopted as a part of the MPEG-4 compression standards. Also we propose an effective still image compression technique, which is simpler than the MPEG-4 compression method and is improved by using a visually weighted quantizer based to HVS(Human Visual System), Simulations are carried out and compared with the algorithm proposed in MPEG-4. The simulation results show that the proposed method in this paper gives much better image quality than that of the method in MPEG-4. Also, except the case where the compression ratio is high, it shows that the proposed method has lower in complexity and provides a better subjective and objective image quality than EZW in most cases. Since wavelet transform well reflects HVS, the compressed image rarely causes blocking artifact compared with JPEG, and in most cases, it shows considerable quality improvement over JPEG.

  • Though a deblocking filter of H.264/AVC provides enhanced image quality by removing blocking artifact on block boundary, the complex filtering operation on this process is a dominant factor of the whole decoding time. In this paper, we designed an ASIP to accelerate deblocking filter operation with the proposed instruction set. We designed a processor based on a MIPS structure with LISA, simulated a deblocking later model, and compared the execution time on the proposed instruction set. In addition, we generated HDL model of the processor through CoWare's Processor Designer and synthesized with TSMC 0.25um CMOS cell library by Synopsys Design Compiler. As the result of the synthesis, the area and delay time increased 7.5% and 3.2%, respectively. However, due to the proposed instruction set, total execution performance is improved by 18.18% on average.

  • We propose an efficient MR image compression technique using fractal coding in wavelet transform domain. In the Proposed method , we construct significant coefficient trees with the absolute values of discrete wavelet transform coefficients and then perform the fractal coding with the information of significant coefficients having high energy. For MR images, most Pixels including background have very low gray level values, the number of significant coefficients is small. so we can expect high compression rate. In addition. since this method uses the fractal coding in wavelet transform domain, blocking artifact is reduced prominently and edges sensitive to human visual system are well preserved. As a result of computer simulation, we obtained the reconstructed images with better quality than those by JPEG at the low bit rates below 0.33[bpp].

  • In this study, a new shielding method was applied to an accessory device that produces electromagnetic waves in the magnetic resonance room to prevent the generation of artifact caused by electromagnetic waves. The research method applied a new shielding made of metal plating fiber to patient surveillance CCTVs without shielding technology, and obtained and evaluated noise map when the power was not cut off and when the new shielding technology was applied without shutting down the CCTV. As a result of the study, it was found that there was at least one group with significant differences. Type I and type III belonged to group 1 while type II belonged to group 2 in the Post-hoc analysis, which meant blocking power of the CCTV and the applying new shielding technology were in the same group. In conclusion, if electromagnetic waves are generated due to additional accessories in the scanning room, the shielding material proposed in this study should be applied which enables the electric state become similar to type I, not generating noise, thereby preventing the artifacts caused by electromagnetic waves.
