A Study on the Engine Performance and Combustion Characteristics of Fish Oil in a Diesel Engine (디젤기관에서의 어유의 연소특성과 기관성능에 관한 연구)

  • The engine performance and combustion characteristics of diesel oil and fish oil blended with diesel oils were investigated at various blending rate of fish oil in a diesel engine. The maximum pressure showed no significant difference among test fuels at low load, but it was higher as the blending rate of fish oil increases at high load. Increasing the blending rate of fish oil, the rate of heat release and burned fraction were higher than those of diesel oil. The ignition delay became longer than that of diesel oil as the blending rate of fish oil increases, and its differences were larger at different loads. The combustion duration and density of smoke were shorter and lower as the blending rate of fish oil increases. The rate of fuel consumption showed no significant difference between diesel oil and fish blended with diesel oils.

  • Vegetable oils can contribute to the goal of energy independence and security owing to their naturally renewable resources. One of the representative vegetable oils is biodiesel, which is being used in domestic and European markets as a blended fuel with automotive diesel. Vegetable oils are promising candidates as base fluids to replace petroleum lubricants because of their excellent lubricity and biodegradability. We prepared biodiesel with a purity of 99.9% via the esterification of waste cooking oil. Blended biodiesel and Petro-lube base oil were mixed to produce five types of mixed lubricating oil. We analyzed the various characteristics of the blended biodiesel with Petro-lube base oil for different blending ratios. The lubricity of the vegetable lubricant improves as the content of biodiesel increases. In addition, since zinc dialkyldithiophosphates (ZnDTPs) are widely used as multifunctional additives in petroleum-based lubricants, we optimized the blending ratio for lubricity, oxidation stability, and shear stability by adding ZnDTP as a performance additive to improve the biodiesel properties, such as oxidation stability and hydrolysis. The optimized lubricants improve by approximately 25% in lubricity and by 20 times in oxidation stability and shear stability after the addition of ZnDTP.

A Study on Characteristics of Rice Bran Oil as an Alternative Fuel in Diesel Engine(II) (디젤기관의 대체연료로서 미장유의 특성 연구(II))

  • In this study, it was tried to analyze not only total hydrocarbon but individual hydrocarbon components from C$_1$to C$\sub$6/ in exhaust gas using gas chromatography to seek the reason fur remarkable differences of smoke emission of diesel fuel, esterfied rice bran oil and blended fuel(esterfied rice bran oil 20vo1-% + diesel fuel 80vo1-%). Individual hydrocarbons(C$_1$ ∼C$\sub$6/) as well as total hydrocarbon of esterfied rice bran oil is reduced remarkably compared with diesel fuel. Although smoke emission of esterfied rice bran oil reduced remarkably compared with commercial diesel fuel, NOx emission of esterfied rice bran oil and blended fuel was increased slightly at high loads and speeds. And, it was tried to reduced NOx emission of them by exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) method. Simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx emission was achieved with the combination of esterfied rice bran oil and EGR method in consequence.

History of edible oils and fats industry in Korea (우리나라 식용유지 산업의 발자취)

  • In Korea, sesame oil has been used as a flavor source mainly by edible oil since ancient times, and it has been used by domestic screw pressing. In the 1960's, the demand for edible oils and fats increased significantly due to the improvement of national income and changes in food consumption patterns. In the early 1970's, a few edible oil manufacturing companies with modern solvent extraction and refining plants were established. In Korea, edible oil manufacturers account for more than 85% of employees with 50 or fewer employees. In Korea, there is a very shortage of raw materials for edible oils and fats, domestic production of edible oil is decreasing year by year and import volume is continuously increasing. While importing the edible oil bearing ingredients including soybean and extracted oil in the past, recently mainly imports crude oil and refines it in Korea. Soybean oil, palm oil and tallow account for 70~90% of total imported edible oils. Due to the recent well-being trend, the demand for olive, canola and grapeseed oils as household edible oil has increased and the production of blended oil has been greatly increased. Since the late 1980's, people have recognized edible oil and fat as a food instead of seasoning ingredient and have increased their edible oil and fat intake in Korea. Since the early 2000's, refined oil and fat products produced in Korea have been exported and is increasing every year.

Combustion and Emission Characteristics of High-Compression-Ratio Diesel Engine Fueled with Bio Oil-Ethanol Blended Fuel (바이오 오일-에탄올 혼합 연료의 고압축비 디젤엔진에서의 연소 및 배기특성)

  • Bio-oil derived from biomass through fast pyrolysis process has the potential to displace a significant amount of petroleum fuels. However, the use of bio-oil in a diesel engine is very limited because of its poor properties, e.g., its low energy density, low cetane number, and high viscosity. Therefore, bio-oil should be emulsified or blended with other fuels that have high centane numbers. Because bio-oil has poor miscibility with petroleum fuels, the most suitable candidate fuels for direct mixing are alcohol fuels. In this study, bio-oil was blended with ethanol, and two types of cetane improvers were added to a blended fuel to improve the self-ignition property. The two types of cetane improvers, PEG 400 and 2-EHN, made it possible for bio-oil blended fuels to combust in a diesel engine with a maximum bio-oil content of 15 wt%. A high-compression-ratio piston is also proposed for the combustion of bio-oil in a diesel engine.

Different Sources of $\omega3$ Fatty Acids at the Fixed Ratio of p/s Affect Glutathione Dependent Enzymes in Rat Hepatocarcinogenesis (간세포 암화과정에서 p/s 고정비율과 $\omega3$ 지방산 급원에 따른 전암성 병변과 Glutathione 의존 해독화 효소계에 미치는 영향)

  • This study is conducted to determine the effects of dietary source of $\omega$3 fatty acids on preneoplastic foci and the glutathione dependent enzymes in rat hepatocarcinogenesis initiated by diethylnitrosamine (DEN). Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed one of three diets containing 10% (w/w) fats fixed p/s = -1.0 and $\omega$6/$\omega$3 ratio = -0.4 or 4.0 ; fish oil-com oil blended (FC), com oil-beef tallow-fish oil blended (CF), com oil-beef tallow-perilla oil blended (CP), from gestation period. At 10 weeks, animals of experimental groups were injected intraperitoneally with DEN (200 mg/kg body weight) and two-thirds partial hepatectomy was carried out 3 weeks later and were sacrificed 8 weeks after DEN initiation. The area and number of glutathione S-transferase placenta (GST-P) positive foci were significantly decreased in rats fed diets containing fish oil (FC and CF) than those fed perilla oil diet (CP). Fish oil feeding significantly increased the activities of glutathione dependent enzymes. Rats fed diets containing fish oil (FC and CF) significantly increased the glutathione (GSH) content and the activities of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutathione S-transferase (GST). Glutathione dependent enzymes had significantly negative correlation with GST-P positive foci. Glucose 6-phosphatase (G6Pase) was increased in rats feeding fish oil. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances were not different among groups. Therefore, the preventive effect against hepatocarcinogenesis might be explained by induction of the glutathione dependent enzymes and G6Pase. (Korean J Nutrition 36(8): 785∼792, 2003)

Strength and chloride penetration of Portland cement mortar containing palm oil fuel ash and ground river sand

  • This paper presents a study of the strength and chloride penetration of blended Portland cement mortar containing ground palm oil fuel ash (POA) and ground river sand (GS). Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) was partially replaced with POA and GS. Compressive strength, rapid chloride penetration test (RCPT) and chloride penetration depth of mortars were determined. The GS only asserted the packing effect and its incorporation reduced the strength and the resistance to chloride penetration of mortar. The POA asserted both packing and pozzolanic effects. The use of the blend of equal portion of POA and GS also produced high strength mortars, save cost and excellent resistance to chloride penetration owing to the synergic effect of the blend of POA and GS. For chloride depth, the mathematical model correlates well with the experimental results. The computer graphics of chloride depth of the ternary blended mortars are also constructed and can be used to aid the understanding and the proportioning of the blended system.

Suppression of Hepatic Lipogenic Enzyme by Dietary Fish Oil In Rat Hepatocarcinogenesis

  • This study was designed to examine the effects of polyundaturated fatty acid(PUFA) from different sourecs on hepatic lipogenic enzyme and peroxisomal ${\beta}$-oxidation in murine hepatocarcinogenesis initiated by diethylnitrodamine (DEN). Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed one of three diets containing 10%(w/w)fat; fish oil-corn oil blended(FO), corn oil-beef tallow-fish oil blended(CF), or corn oil-beef tallow-perilla oil blended (CP), from the gestation period. At 10 weeks, animals were received a single inraperitoneal injection of DEN (200mg/kg body weight), were subjected to two-thirds partial hepatectomy 3 weeks later and were sacrificed 8 weeks after DEN initiation. The areas of placental glutathione S-transferase (GST-P) positive foci were significantly smaller in rats fed fish oil containing diets (FO and CF) than those fed CP diet. Fish oil feeding significantly decreased th activities of lipogenic enzyme. Rats fed fish oil containing diets (FO, CF) exhibited the lower fatty acid synthase (FAS) activity than those fed CP diet and FAS activity was positively correlated with areas of GSP-P positivie foci. Glucose-6-phophate dehydrogenase activity was the lowest and peroxisomal ${\beta}$-oxidation was stimulated in rats fed FO diet compared to other groups. It was also found that serum cholesterol was decreased in FO group. Therefore, the preventive effect against hepatocarcinogenesis and hypolipidemic effect of fish oil can be explained partly by suppression of the hepatic lipogenesis and by increase of peroxisomal ${\beta}$-oxidation.

Role of FT-IR in Assessing Lubricant Degradation - A Study on Palm Oil Methyl Ester Blended Lubricant

  • In this paper, studies were made on the palm oil methyl ester (POME) added lubricants using FT-IR for monitoring oil degradation. In order to assess the degradation characteristics of POME added lubricant by FT-IR, static oxidation test was conducted using three different blended lubricants (viz, zero percent POME, five percent POME and ten percent POME with mineral-based oil) for 280 hrs. The oxidation temperature was set at $140^{\circ}C$. FT-IR quantitative data indicate an increased in oxidation products which was formed from 10% POME added lubricants after 280 hrs of oxidation test. The 5% POME added lubricant and mineral-based lubricant (without POME) showed less oxidation product after the test. From the FT-IR spectrum analysis of the oxidized oils it could be concluded that 5% POME can improve the performance of mineral-based oil by forming protective films.
