  • This study, a vertical double-deck method using an electronic detonator was applied to increase excavation volume and reduce blast pollution. In the double deck method, there is a possibility that blasting efficiency may be reduced if bottom deck blasting is carried out without the free surface being completely formed after upper deck blasting. And for this reason, the blasting efficiency of the double deck method varies depending on the deck delay time. Therefore, in this study, we proposed four deck delay times applying 1 to 5 times the hole delay time. And blasting efficiency was evaluated according to fragmentation analysis. As a result of the fragmentation evaluation, the fragmentation of pattern 4 (deck delay time = hole delay time×5) was the best, but it was confirmed that fragmentation efficiency increased significantly from pattern 3 (deck delay time = hole delay time×3). Accordingly, it is analyzed that when blasting a vertical double deck, the deck delay time must be at least three times the hole delay time to obtain an efficient blasting effect.

  • The enlargement of existing tunnels is required to cope with problems related to traffic congestion. Sometimes, the tunnel traffic must be maintained through existing tunnels during their reconstruction due to non-availability of detours. And excavation by drill and blasting is desired for widening a hard rock tunnel. In this case, the road must be closed for some period for blasting through analyzing of traffic volume. In this paper, a case study on some traffic countermeasures for tunnel enlargement by blasting was performed. And the traffic flow characteristics of some tunnels in domestic main city were analyzed.

  • The blast-induced ground vibrations is one of the most important factors which is considered to design blasting patterns in urban excavation. To compare with vibration level of different explosives, peak particle velocity of each explosive was measured. The results are summerized as follows. 1. Among the three kinds of explosives, the largest vibration was obtained from the gelatine dynamite, while the smallest was blasting of ammonium nitrate. 2. The vibration levels of ammonium nitrate and slurry explosive were smaller about 35%, 20% respectively than that of gelatine dynamite.

  • Tunnel blasting that plays the most important role in the construction of a drill & blast tunnel, shows a big difference in operation time according to various factors such as rock mass quality, tunnel dimension, machine performance, and the skill level of tunnel crews. This paper analyzes the differences between the time calculated by the standard of estimate and actual operation time based upon field investigations on blasting operation time in three tunnels of Korea. The result shows that actual blasting time is generally about 8%~16% less than the standard of estimate in cases that normal operations are performed. If the time delayed by unforeseen situations is included, however, it is presumed that the number of cases that actual operation time exceeds the standard of estimate are considerable. This study aims to help make a judgement over the appropriacy of the standard of estimate through continuous investigations on actual operation time, as well as improve the productivity of tunnel excavation.

  • Recently, there has been an increasing number of cases of improving constructability by using electronic detonators with precise delay time in tunnel blasting sites. This case is a case of conducting test blasting using with non-electric detonator and electronic detonator at the site of 『Seoul Metropolitan Area Express Railroad Route A Private Investment Project Section 00』 that requires careful management of vibration and noise. Although this site was designed with a non-electric detonator, it was attempted to improve the advance rate and control vibration and noise by mixing the non-electric detonator and the electronic detonator due to the decrease in the advance rate. As a result of the blasting, the target value was achieved with an advance rate of about 85% and a maximum measured value of vibration and noise is 0.215cm/sec and 73.22dB(A) which were measured below regulatory standards. As blasting works in downtown areas, it is necessary to designate measurement and management objects to continuously manage vibration and noise.

  • In order to evaluate the necessity for the support during the excavation of the transport drift and use the data for design applications, laboratory testings of mechanical properties of rock samples and engineering rock mass classifications on this study site were performed. The values of RMR and Q-system are 68 and 11.8, respectively. Since these results were evaluated as good, this rock mass were determined to be unsupported. Full face excavation method was determined to be suitable for excavating this drift. In case of excavation, smooth blasting techniques must be carried out at the wall rock and the crown. However, considering the blast vibration etc. that have an effect on the surrounding rock mass, approximately less than 9kg of explosive charges per blast should be maintained.

  • Excavation of an opening in a saturated porous rock may lead to the development of pore pressure around the opening due to the redistribution of initial rock stresses. The built-up of pore pressure, in turn, may affect the mechanical behavior of rock mass and give the different pattern of stress distribution around the opening from that of the case where the coupling is neglected. In this study, the short time response of an opening excavated in saturated ground under anisotropic initial stress conditions was investigated numerically. Not on the wall of opening but at a short distance from the wall, the tangential stresses were peak during the short period after excavation when the hydro-mechanical coupling is considered.

  • Since blasting noise is impact noise, it will give a sudden shock to the human. In the case, such as the blast vibration, it has given aging buildings and livestock great damage to move the vibration along ground in nearby regions. In this study, the influence of the blasting generated during excavation was analyzed for effects on regional. A couple of field and laboratory surveys about geological were carried out to figure out the geological ratio in the study-performed area. Blast vibration noise was compared to the domestic and abroad case studies and each of the institutions permissible standards established the most appropriate criteria in site condition. The vibration velocity of blasting vibration exploits the values which were measured from test blasting on the ground in order to examine blasting effect. Considering the blasting point as the shortest distance from safety facilities (farms, private houses, etc.), the examination of the influence range, which was derived from the vibration velocity of blasting vibration, was performed to figure out how the point affected the safety facilities. Three-dimensional numerical analysis was performed a time history analysis in order to analyze the behavior of the structure for a dynamic blast load, which was determined in three directions of the blast vibration value. The results of three-dimensional numerical analysis and the blasting effect of blasting vibration estimation equation blasting vibration of impact circle with accompanying test blasting were compared. And the analysis confirmed similar results figures.

  • In the excavation work like blasting/excavator work bordering on the urban railway, the dynamic safety of railway structures like tunnel, open-cut box structure and elevated bridge was investigated by numerical analysis in this study. The practically presented criteria on influential zones at the blasting work in the construction industry was numerically checked in cases of the precise vibration-controlled blasting (type II) and the small scale vibration-controlled blasting (type III) and it was shown that the criteria on blasting work methods needed to be supplemented through continuous field tests and numerical analyses. The influence of excavation vibration by mechanical excavators was especially investigated in case of earth auger and breaker. The numerical analysis of tunnel shows that the criteria on vibration velocities from the regression analysis of field test values was conservative. The amplification phenomenon of excavating vibration velocity was shown passing through the backfilling soil between the earth auger and the open-cut box structure. It was shown that the added-vibration on the superstructure of elevated bridge was occurred at the bottom of pile like earthquake when the excavator vibration was arriving at the pile toe. The systematic and continuous research on the vibration effect from excavating works was needed for the safety of urban railway structures and nearby facilities.

  • Interest in building underground spaces is increasing for the creation of downtown infrastructure and efficient space utilization. A representative method of utilizing underground space is a tunnel, and in addition to road tunnels, the construction of utility tunnels such as power conduits and utility conduits is gradually increasing. The current basic tunnel construction method can be divided into NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method) and TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine). The NATM is a reliable method, but it is accompanied by vibration and noise due to blasting. In the case of the TBM excavation method, there are disadvantages in terms of construction period and construction cost, but it is possible to improve economic feasibility by introducing appropriate complementary methods. In this study, a blasting method was develop using the NATM after TBM pre-excavation using the protective shield method. This is a method that compensates for the disadvantages of each tunnel construction method, and is expected to reduce construction costs, blasting vibration, and noise. In order to review the performance of the developed method, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of explosion-proof tube to which a protective shield scale model was applied, and the impact of blasting vibration of the protective shield method was analyzed.
