  • At present around 50 companies have their own crushing plants, which manufacture rock into crushed sand, over around 350 different quarry throughout the nation. However, in most plants the stone dust sludge is left as it is in their plants so that they have difficulty to utilize. Furthermore, environmental pollution may be even caused due to dust generated when it is dried. Recycling is starting capturing the attention of the people working over the quarry due to the reasons described above. This research has studied in the quarters the usability as landfill liner of the stone dust sludge, which is industrial waste. We investigated what technological properties it would have after mixing the stone dust sludge with SM(sandy soil) first and then with blast furnace slag or reject ash, which is waste, and cement as the stabilizer. As the result of three tests; compacting test, strength test, and permeability test; to satisfy the regulatory guideline of the government that is the compress strength over 5 $kgf/cm^2$, the flexibility over 1 $kgf/cm^2$, and the permeability under $1.0{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$ From this research, we could confirm that stone dust sludge would be used as waste landfill liner if it were mixed with other waste by the proper mixing ratio.

  • Both rapid industrial development and society has achieved more comfortable life. But, behind this facts of this industrial development have current pictures that occur global warming and much more by-products by environmental pollution. Therefore, this study used BFS and CFA as by-products to reduce cement usage emitted at a high rate of $CO_2$ gas, to examine sludge recycling strategy more than 200,000ton emitted at local dyeing complex, we suggest basic data research about non-cement matrix properties of utilizing dyeing sludge carbide. As a result, the more dyeing sludge carbide replacement ratio gets higher, the more air content and flow rise. Also, as the dyeing sludge carbide replacement ratio increase more, flexural strength and compressive strength go down.

  • This study is of manufacturing artificial lightweight aggregates using industrial wastes. The ingredients for manufacturing lightweight aggregate were stone sludge and bottom ash for main materials, and steel slag(SS), glass abrasive sludge(GS) and blast furnace slag(BS) respectively for accessory material. Their precursors were sintered in the range of $1,050{\sim}1,150^{\circ}C$ for 5 min. The sintered results show that the lightweight aggregate with SS had low water absorption ratio and density at $1,150^{\circ}C$. There's a possibility that if GS is used more than the range of this study, GS can be manufactured lightweight aggregate. But it is judged that BS are incongruent to be used for a raw material of lightweight aggregate.

  • Calcium ferrite is more effective binder for making sintered ore and flux for steel making because of it's low melting temperature. In this Study, calcium ferrite was made by calcinating method in the cement manufacturing process in order to reduce manufacturing costs and increase productivity. Limestone and calcination sludge were used as CaO source, steelmaking sludge, blast furnace dust and iron ore were used as Fe-bearing raw materials. The sintering temperature of specimens is in the range of $950{\sim}1170^{\circ}C$. For Calcium ferrite can be used 'binder for making sintered ore' or 'flux for converter/electric furnace' with a low melting point properties, the raw material characteristics and sintering properties were investigated.

  • The presens study was aimed to investigate the possibility of use of pozzolanic materials such as blast furnace slag, fly ash, paper sludge ash which are produced from industrial wastes, as construction materials. Experiments were undertaken to investigate the properties of concrete bricks and interlocking blocks made with these industrial by-products. As a result, it was found that the concrete bricks and interlocking blocks made with substitute materials have equivalent strength and quality to those of conventional concrete bricks and interlocking blocks made with only cement. Thus, it could be expected that recycling the industrial wastes can reduce manufacturing costs of the cement as well as prevent environmental pollution by the use of the by-products thrown out as wastes to make secondary products of the concrete.

  • This study discussed the pozzolanic properties of calcined sewage sludge (CSS) according to calcination and fineness conditions. The chemical and mineralogical analysis of CSS according to calcination temperature and time were carried out and compared with that of the existing pozzolanic materials such as fly-ash, blast furnance slag and meta-kaolin. Various mortars were made by mixing those CSS and $Ca(OH)_2$ (1:1 wt. %), and their compressive strength and hydrates according to experimental factors such as fineness of CSS and curing age were also investigated in detail. The results show clearly the potentiality of calcined sewage sludge (CSS) as an admixture materials in concrete, but the CSS should be controlled by calcination temperature and time, and fineness etc. In this experimental condition, the calcination temperature of $800^{\circ}C$, calcination time of 2 hours and fineness of $5,000cm^2/g$ were optimum conditions in consideration of the mechanical properties and economic efficiency of CSS. The compressive strength of CSS mortars was higher than that of fly-ash mortars and blast furnace slag mortars, especially at the early ages. Then, the utilization of CSS in construction fields was greatly expected.

  • In this study, in order to establish a plan that will enable safe use of renewable resources such as diverse industrial by-products and urban recycled materials, we conducted experiments that focused on flow, bleeding, compressive strength and environmental pollution evaluation to evaluate the material properties of low strength concrete using BFS and SS. In the case of low strength concrete using BFS and SS, blending of at least BFS 6000 within a 30% range regardless of the type of sand used was found to be the most effective approach for improving the workability by securing the minimum unit quantity of water, restraining the bleeding ratio and establishing compressive strength by taking account of the applicability at the work site. In particular, in view of the efficient use of SS, the optimal mixing condition was found to be the mixing of BFS 8000 with in the 30% range, not only for improving the workability restraining the bleeding ratio and establishing the compressive strength but also for application to the work site. Further, the results of tests on hazardous substance content and those of elution tests conducted on soil cement using SS indicated that all values satisfied the environmental standards without any harmful effects on the surrounding environment.

  • Slag cement and supersulfated slag cement were fabricated by mixing blast furnace slag and ordinary portland cement and adapted to solidify/stabilize heavy metal contained hazardous waste sludge. In case of slag cement, it showed continuous increase of their compressive strengths, which is attributed to the formation of the C-S-H, ettringite and monosulfate with STS sludge. However, BF and COREX sludge has a different shape and composition. therefore, adequate compressive strength could not be achieved with this slag cement. In case of the mixture of the each sludge like the STS-BF or the STS-COREX, the compressive strength over the standard level for disposing the wastes could be obtained with slag cement. The supersulfated slag cement that contain accelerators was very effective in solidifying the COREX sludge, which was difficult to solidify using different cement and obtained high compressive strength only for 3 days.

  • Sediment has been increasingly acknowledged as a carrier in water system and an available contamination. For this reason, dredging of sediment in reservoir to remediate water quality and secure storage capacity is conducted annually. However, disposal of numerous dredged sediment is necessary as a secondary problem. Currently, in Korea, dredged sediment is classified as waste to be reclamated or recycled into sandy soil, however, they are still in trouble because of spacial and environmental problem. Therefore, rather than simple disposal or reuse into sandy soil, it is necessary to research on method to manage main cause of pollution and increase the value as a resource. In this study, we intend to develop a recycle technology for numerous dredged sediment produced by dredging in deteriorated reservoirs using solidificator (stabilizer). To achieve this, we will consider utilization of dredged sediment and evaluation of use possibility as natural recycle by analysis the characteristics of soil-solidificator mixture in terms of physicochemical properties and the mixing ratio between sediment and solidificator.

  • In this study, the applicability and reproducibility of laser induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS) for heavy metal analysis in clinker and 5 types of by-products(crushed stone sludge, blast furnace slag, steel slag, waste concrete sludge, bottom ash) were experimentally reviewed. As a result of ICP-MS, XRF, and LIBS analysis of the six samples, the difference between ICP and XRF was confirmed in the quantitative analysis, but the LIBS analysis showed a difference by element from the standard analysis, and only qualitative analysis of the sample was possible. LIBS analysis wavelength was set for three types of heavy metals(Cd - 214.44nm, Pb - 405.78nm, Hg - 253.65nm). As a result of laser irradiation on the surface of the membrane impregnated with a solution of each concentration(1~1000ppm) and dried, the correlation between the spectral intensity and the concentration was confirmed.
