The purpose of this research was the comparative study of 3 kinds of black soybean on murine immune cells. The 3 kinds of black soybean are Glycine max Merr. with inner color-yellow (GY), Glycine max Merr. with inner color-greenish (GG) and Rhynchosia volubilis Lour. (RV). All of the black soybean increased the viability of murine thymocytes in vitro. The combined treatment of GY or GG and mitogen did not affect the viability of splenic T- and B-lymphocytes compared with mitogen-treated group, but the combined treatment of RV and mitogen increased their action compared with mitogen-treated group. Also, the 3 kinds of black soybean were given p.o. once a day for 7 days, respectively. RV increased the population of thymic-$CD8^+$, splenic-$CD8^+$ and $B220^+$ cells in vivo. Furthermore, GY and GG did not affect the phagocytic activity and the production of nitric oxide in peritoneal macrophages in vitro, but RV enhanced their action. These results suggest that immunopotentiative action of Rhynchosia volubilis Lour. is more potent than their of Glycine max Merr.
Research in the field of biosensor has enormously increased over the recent years. The metal-oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) type protein sensor offers a lot of potential advantages such as small size and weight, the possibility of automatic packaging at wafer level, on-chip integration of biosensor arrays, and the label-free molecular detection. We fabricated MOSFET protein sensor and proposed the gold-black electrode as the gate metal to improve the response. The experimental results showed that the output voltage of MOSFET protein sensor was varied by concentration of albumin proteins and the gold-black gate increased the response up to maximum 13 % because it has the larger surface area than that of planar-gold gate. It means that the expanded gate allows a larger number of ligands on same area, and makes the more albumin proteins adsorbed on gate receptor.
Edible berries are rich in anthocyanins and phenolic acids, compounds that possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and other biological activities. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of five berries including acaiberry (Euterpe oleracea Mart.), Aronia/black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa), blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium), black currant (Ribes nigrum L.), and cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) were assessed. The Aronia G (prepared by GreenField s.c.) exhibited the highest antioxidant activities as shown in total phenolic (138.81 mg CAE/g), flavonoid (3.68 mg QE/g), and anthocyanin (20.31 mg/g) contents compared to the other berries. It also showed the strongest scavenging activities such as DPPH (69.69 mg vitamin C/g) and ABTS radical scavenging activity ($757.79{\mu}mol$ trolox/g). Aronia G exhibited strong ferric reducing antioxidant power ($553.98{\mu}mol$ vitamin C/g), and oxygen radical absorbance capacity ($820.92{\mu}mol$ trolox/g). In addition, black currant and Aronia showed stronger inhibition of nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW 264.7 cell than the other berries. According to the above results, the Aronia and other edible berries have notably high level of antioxidant activities and they could be used as a potential source of natural antioxidants.
Nano-sized cobalt oxide powders were prepared by low pressure spray pyrolysis process. The precursor powders obtained by low pressure spray pyrolysis process from the spray solution with ethylene glycol had several microns size and hollow structure. The precursor powders obtained from the spray solution with optimum concentration of ethylene glycol formed the nano-sized cobalt oxide powders with regular morphology after post-treatment without milling process. On the other hand, the cobalt oxide powders obtained from the spray solution without ethylene glycol had submicron size and spherical shape before and after posttreatment. The mean size of the cobalt oxide powders formed from the spray solution with concentration of ethylene glycol of 0.7M was 180 nm after post-treatment at temperature of $800^{\circ}C$. The mean size of the powders could be controlled from several tens nanometer to micron sizes by changing the post-treatment temperatures in the preparation of cobalt oxide powders by low pressure spray pyrolysis process.
In the present study, the focus is on the analysis of carbothermal reduction of oxide powder prepared from waste WC/Co hardmetal by solid carbon under a stream of argon for the recycling of the WC/Co hard-metal. The oxide powder was prepared by the combination of the oxidation and crushing processes using the waste $WC-8 wt.\%Co$ hardmetal as the raw material. This oxide powder was mixed with carbon black, and then this mixture was carbothermally reduced under a flowing argon atmosphere. The changes in the phase structure and gases discharge of the mixture during carbothermal reduction was analysed using XRD and gas analyzer. The oxide powder prepared from waste $WC-8wt.\%Co$ hardmetal has a mixture of $WO_{3} and CoWO_{4}$. This oxide powder reduced at about $850^{\circ}C$, formed tungsten carbides at about $950^{\circ}C$, and then fully transformed to a mixed state of tungsten carbide (WC) and cobalt at about $1100^{\circ}C$ by solid carbon under a stream of argon. The WC/Co composite powder synthesized at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours from oxide powder of waste $WC-8wt.\%Co$ hardmetal has an average particle size of $0.3 {\mu}m$.
Spinel pigments, developing black color in high temperature glazes at oxidation or reduction atmosphere, without CoO because of its high price were synthesized by solid solution method. Ten mixed compositions consisted of NiO, MnO, $Fe_2O_3 and $Mn_2O_3$ were fired at $1250^{\circ}C$ for 1h. The resulting pigments were characterized by using XRD, FT-IR, SEM and UV-vis spectrometer. Structure of the pigments are spinel and particles' shape are spherical or cubic. Glazed tiles containing 5 wt% pigments were fired at $1260^{\circ}C$ and $1240^{\circ}C$ in reduction atmosphere. Color in glazes were analyzed by UV-vis spectrometer. Colors of NiO 0.875 MnO $0.125{\cdot}Fe_2O_3$$0.4875{\cdot}Cr_2O_3$$0.50{\cdot}Mn_2O_3$ 0.0125 mole% and NiO 0.875 MnO $0.125{\cdot}Fe_2O_3$$0.3875{\cdot}Cr_2O_3$$0.50{\cdot}Mn_2O_3$ 0.1125 mole% in lime glaze showed black in oxidation, in reduction NiO 0.875 MnO $0.125{\cdot}Fe_2O_3$$0.4875{\cdot}Cr_2O_3$$0.50{\cdot}Mn_2O_3$ 0.0125 mole% and NiO 0.875 MnO $0.125{\cdot}Fe_2O_3$$0.4375{\cdot}Cr_2O_3$$0.55{\cdot}Mn_2O_3$ 0.0125 mole% showed black. In case of lime-barium glaze, NiO 0.875 MnO $0.125{\cdot}Fe_2O_3$$0.3875{\cdot}Cr_2O_3$$0.50{\cdot}Mn_2O_3$ 0.1125 mole%, NiO 0.975 MnO $0.075{\cdot}Fe_2O_3$$0.4375{\cdot}Cr_2O_3$$0.50{\cdot}Mn_2O_3$ 0.0625 mole% and NiO 0.925 MnO $0.075{\cdot}Fe_2O_3$$0.4375{\cdot}Cr_2O_3$$0.50{\cdot}Mn_2O_3$ 0.0625 mole% showed black color in oxidation and NiO 0.875 MnO $0.125{\cdot}Fe_2O_3$$0.3875{\cdot}Cr_2O_3$$0.50{\cdot}Mn_2O_3$ 0.1125 mole%, NiO 0.925 MnO $0.075{\cdot}Fe_2O_3$$0.4375{\cdot}Cr_2O_3$$0.50{\cdot}Mn_2O_3$ 0.0625 mole% and NiO 0.725 MnO $0.275{\cdot}Fe_2O_3$$0.4375{\cdot}Cr_2O_3$$0.50{\cdot}Mn_2O_3$ 0.0625 mole% showed black one in reduction.
Two-dimensional (2D) materials have been studied widely owing to their outstanding properties since monolayer graphene was isolated in 2004. Especially, among 2D materials, phosphorene, a single atomic layer of black phosphorus (BP), has been highlighted for its electrical properties. This material can serve as a substitute for graphene, which has been revealed as a "semi-metal", in next-generation semiconductors. However, few-layer BP is prone to degradation under ambient conditions owing to its reactivity with oxygen and water, which results in the condensation of water droplets on the surface of the BP flakes. This causes charge transfer from the phosphorus atom to oxygen, resulting in the formation of phosphoric acid (oxide) and degrades the various properties of BP. Therefore, it is necessary to find passivation methods to prevent BP flakes from being degraded under ambient conditions. This review article deals with recent studies on passivation methods for BP and their performance against oxygen and water, effects on the electrical properties of BP, and the extent to how they protect BP.
26 multi-regional water treatment plants (WTPs) were investigated, to determine the characteristics of manganese (Mn) concentration and removal in Korea. Mn concentrations of raw water in most WTPs were higher than the drinking water standard (i.e., 0.05 mg/L); thus, proper removal of Mn at the WTPs is needed. Mn concentration was generally higher in lakes than rivers due to seasonal lake turnovers. The Mn concentrations of treated water at 26 WTPs in 2012 were less than 0.05 mg/L, due to strict law enforcement and water treatment processes optimization. However, before 2010, those concentrations were more than 0.05 mg/L, which could have led to an accumulation of Mn oxides in the distribution system. This could be one of the main reasons for black water occurrence. Therefore, regular monitoring of Mn concentration in the distribution system, flushing, and proper Mn removal at WTPs are needed, to supply clean and palatable tap water.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Oxidative stress is closely related with inflammation and development of many diseases. Black soybean seed coat contains high amount of anthocyanins, which are well-known for free radical scavenging activities. This study investigated inflammatory response and action mechanism of black soybean anthocyanins with regard to antioxidant activity in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. MATERIALS/METHODS: RAW 264.7 cells were treated with anthocyanins extracted from black soybean seed coats in a concentration range of 12.5 to $100{\mu}g/mL$. The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), secretion of pro-inflammatory mediators and cytokines, and the signaling in the mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs) pathway were examined. RESULTS: Black soybean anthocyanins significantly decreased LPS-stimulated production of ROS, inflammatory mediators such as nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin $E_2$, and pro-inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor ${\alpha}$ and interleukin-6, in a dose-dependent manner without cytotoxicity (P < 0.001). Black soybean anthocyanins downregulated the expression of inducible NO synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells (P < 0.001). Moreover, black soybean anthocyanins inhibited LPS-induced phosphorylation of MAPKs, including extracellular signal-regulated kinase, c-Jun N-terminal kinase, and p38 (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that black soybean anthocyanins exert anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting ROS generation and subsequent MAPKs signaling, thereby inhibiting inflammatory responses.
