As physical condition of students improves, there is a need to develop human body-friendly desk and chair for students. In this study, desks and chairs were manufactured with curved veneer lamination under high frequency heating and pressing, using ten wood species such as Japanese red pine, Korean pine, pitch pine, Japanese larch, yellow poplar, black locust, oak, radiata pine, beech, and birch. The performance of these products were evaluated. The results obtained were summarized as follows; With high frequency heating, the turned lamination of veneers with full size sheet ($3{\times}6\;feet$) prepared by rotary lathe peeling was successfully applied for making the members of desk top, leg frames of desk and chair. Bending strengths of desk tops were relatively greater for yellow poplar, black locust and red pine, which were similar to those of beech and birch. Bending strengths of desk legs were classified into greater species group (red pine, yellow poplar, larch) and lower species group (radiata pine, Korean pine, pitch pine). Compressive strengths of chair legs in parallel direction to the lamination were greater in black locust and larch. On the other hand, differences between outer and inner gap at the top and drawer bottom of desk top were rather larger for the laminations of birch and beech, and less for those of yellow poplar and pitch pine, showing greater stability of open drawer space. In results, yellow poplar, larch, pitch pine and red pine showed good appearance and strength properties at the curved veneer lamination. Accordingly, it was believed that these domestic woods were able to substitute for birch which was being imported for the use of veneer-laminates type furniture.
Black locust(Robina pseudo-acacia L.) and hornbeam trees(Carpinus laxiflora BL.) are widely growing in Korea and have relatively good wood qualities. However, they have seldom been used as industrial materials. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of wood moisture content on microwave-bending processing. The bending processing of the both species are improved as the increase of wood moisture from 30% to green, and the maximum limit of wood moiture content is 50%. The minimum solid-bending radii of black locust and hornbeam green wood were 60mm and 40mm for micro-wave bending, respectively. In conclusion, the microwave-heated green wood showed very good bending processing properties for bent-wood furniture.
The rheological and diffusion properties of blends of agar/guar gum, agar/Phytagel and Phytagel/guar gum were analysed and compared to those properties of agar or Phytagel applied alone at two different gelling concentrations. Moreover, their effects on the shoot multiplication of the apple scion Galaxy and two black locust clones (SF63, SF82) were studied, and their cost benefits over agar were calculated. Elastic hydrogel formation was demonstrated for each blend by rheological measurements, but the gel strength depended on the types and concentrations of the applied gelling agents and blends. Guar gum was able to speed the diffusion in the different blends, and diffusion was independent of gel strength. The rate of shoot multiplication increased (to 8.9 shoots per explant) and the percent of hyperhydrated shoots decreased (to 12%) when the blend of agar/guar gum was used for the shoot multiplication of apple. Similarly, the highest multiplication rates of black locust clones (between 3.9 and 4.1) were obtained on media solidified by blends containing guar gum. The best shoot performance with the lowest percent of hyperhydrated shoots (11-12% in SF63 and 2-23% in SF82) was achieved using agar alone or the agar/guar gum blend. The shoot multiplication was improved of both species and the production cost was reduced by 42% by using the agar/guar gum blend.
Symptom of the mosaic disease of black locust which is presently widespread in Korea was observed and transmission of the disease was investigated by means of grafting Since its symptom was typically mosaic and its transmission was easily accomplished, the disease was considered to be caused by a virus. In investigation of transmission by grafting, it was found out that the discase was easily transmitted in both of the following cases, i. e., healthy seedlings grafted with diseased scions and diseased roots with healthy scions. In the healthy seedlings plus diseased scions grafting, some grafted seedlings were purposedly deprived of the diseased scions after, a certain length of time(10∼30 days), while some were left grafted. The former case showed much higher transmission rate than the latter case, but no fluctuation in rate of transmission by the length of contact period(10-30 days) was recognized. And even when the union between stock and diseased scion by callusing was not successful, the transmission was withnesed. On the basis of the symptom, transmission by grafting, and possibility of transmission by sap inoculation(not published yet), it is supposed that the mosaic virus belongs to the group of the black locust mosaic virus that has been reported in southeastern Europe by Atanasoff(1935) and Milinko et al(1961). It is very likely that the witches' broom of black locust recorded by Myung-O Kim et al(1961) in Korea is the mosaic disease.
The rate of soil respiration to varying stand ages was studied in four Robinia pseudoacacia stands(18-, 23-, 28- and 35-year old) throughout one year from September 1998 to August 1999. Soil temperatures showed a pronounced seasonal pattern, in contrast to soil moisture. The highest rate of soil respiration was generally found in August when soil temperatures were the highest, and the lowest in January. The daily rate of soil respiration amounted to 5.51($g\;CO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}day^{-1}$) for 18-year old stand, 5.28 for 23-year old stand, 8.29 for 28-year stand, and 2.67 for 35-year old black locust stand, respectively. The $Q_{10}$ values were ranged between 1.63 and 1.66, averaging 1.65 for the R. pseudoaca'cia stands. The results indicate significant correlation between soil temperature and soil respiration for all four stands(r=0.96 to 0.97). Among the study stands, the annual rate of soil respiration was the highest ($3.03kg\;CO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}yr^{-1}$) for 28-year old stand.
During the year 2014, black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) had been observed with dark brown spots on the leaves at Andong, Cheongsong, Mungyeong in Korea. Symptoms initially appeared as small, black lesions on the leaves, and sometimes, the leaves become yellow and ultimately leads to fall off the leaves. The pathogenic fungus grown in potato dextrose agar was white or sometime gray with mycelia in tufts and from which numerous conidia were produced. The conidia were straight and fusiform in shape and measured $8.3-17.2{\times}2.5-4.1{\mu}m$. Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rRNA sequence analysis for sequence similarity of the ITS region revealed 100% identity with nucleotide sequences for Colletotrichum acutatum. The morphological characteristics, pathogenicity and molecular data have been confirmed that the symptomatic pathogen was C. acutatum. This is the first report of anthracnose caused by C. acutatum on black locust in Korea.
The objectives of this study were to find out proper potting medium and nutrient levels in the soil to promote the root nodule formation in black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) seedlings. Commercial potting medium, compost, organic fertilizer, molded forest fertilizer, and compound fertilizer were used at different mixing rates to bring in various levels of mineral nutrients in the soil. Seedlings were grown in pots in a greenhouse for three months. Commercial potting medium containing peatmoss, vermiculite, and geolite was not suited for early nodule formation due to lack of nutrients, even though it produced good total dry weight. Compost was the best medium to promote both high total dry weight production and nodule formation with providing the proper levels of nitrogen and phosphorus in the soil. Molded forest fertilizer was acceptable for nodule formation. Compound fertilizer and organic fertilizer was not suited for nodule formation. The potting medium should contain optimum levels of nitrogen (0.05-0.2%) and phosphorus (100-600ppm) to promote early nodule formation in black locust seedlings.
To get ecological information necessary for the prediction on succession and the silvicultural control of the black locust(R. pseudoacacia) plantation, classification of vegetation unit. competition of major species, and succession were analyzed. The results were as follows. Vegetation units classified in R. pseudoacacia forest were Quercus variabilis community, Persicaria perfoliata community, Styrax japonica community, Acalypha australis community, Typical community. Species diversity indices showed significant difference among the vegetation units. As a result of stand ordination by CCA method, arrangement of stands on Axis I was correlated significantly with altitude, sand, silt and available phosphorus contents, and that on Axis II was with total nitrogen, exchangeable calcium and kalium contents. It was judged that R. pseudoacacia plantation would be replaced by the mixed forest including Quercus spp., Acer spp., and Prunus spp. etc., native to Korea with the progression of succession as the results of analyses on competition of major species and successional tendency in R. pseudoacacia plantation.

A micropropagation system for black Locust(Robinia pseudoacacia) was established by using shoots and pin-punctured leaves of in vitro germinated seedlings. The greatest number of shoots (an average of 10.5 shoots) was obtained when shoot tips were cultured on MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/l BAP and 0.01 mg/l NAA. When pin-punctured leaf explants were cultured on the same medium, mean number of 13.5 shoots were produced. Shoot growth was accelerated by adding 50 mg/l of silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$), an anti-ethylene compound to the culture medium. Each shoot was excised from the mass and transferred onto half strength MS medium for rooting. Zygotic embryos at different developmental stages were cultured on LS medium supplemented with various growth regulators to induce somatic embryos. When cultured on LS medium with 1.0 mg/l 2,4-D. 14.3% of the zygotic embryos induced somatic embryos. Upon transfer onto the basal medium, somatic embryos sporadically converted into plantlets.
Allelopathic effects of black locust(Robinia pseudoacacia L.) was evaluated through germination tests using 13 different species including R. pseudoacacia itself. The water extract from leaf or root of R. pseudoacacia was separately tested. Seed germination of several species was inhibited in the presence of leaf or root extract, although the level of germination was in a wide range depending on the species. Seed germination of R. pseudoacacia was suppressed by 30 % in its leaf extract. Among tested tree species, Hibiscus syriacus and Alnus frma showed significantly inhibited germination in the root extracts whereas Thuja orientalis exhibited germination inhibition in the leaf extract. HPLC was carried out to identify allelochemicals in extracts of leaf and root using eight authentic phenolic compounds that are known to be responsible for allelopathy. The major phenolic compounds occupying about 40 % of total phenolic acids were gentisic acid in leaves and vanillic acid and syringic acid in roots. The leaves contained 7 times more phenolic acids than the roots. Among 8 tested phenolic compounds vanillin was detected only in roots and coumaric acid in leaves. Consequently, 3 out of 13 species showed significantly inhibited germination due to leaf or root extract. This germination test indicates that the inhibitory allelopathic effect by R. pseudoacacia is caused by chemical interaction not by nutritional competition and that the allelochermicals of black locust act species-specifically. No specific influence of the total amount of phenolic compounds on the allelopathic inhibitory germination and the synergic effect by each phenolic compound may play a role for the allelopathic effect by R. pseudoacacia.
