In this paper, we propose an optimal trajectory for biped robots to move up-and-down stairs using a genetic algorithm and a computed-torque control for biped robots to be dynamically stable. First, a Real-Coded Genetic Algorithm (RCGA) which of operators are composed of reproduction, crossover and mutation is used to minimize the total energy. Constraints are divided into equalities and inequalities: Equality constraints consist of a position condition at the start and end of a step period and repeatability conditions related to each joint angle and angular velocity. Inequality constraints include collision avoidance conditions of a swing leg at the face and edge of a stair, knee joint conditions with respect to the avoidance of the kinematic singularity, and the zero moment point condition with respect to the stability into the going direction. In order to approximate a gait, each joint angle trajectory is defined as a 4-th order polynomial of which coefficients are chromosomes. The effectiveness of the proposed optimal trajectory is shown in computer simulations with a 6-dof biped robot that consists of seven links in the sagittal plane. The trajectory is more efficient than that generated by the modified GCIPM. And various trajectories generated by the proposed GA method are analyzed in a viewpoint of the consumption energy: walking on even ground, ascending stairs, and descending stairs.

As research on the practical use of robots has continued since the past, advancements into each field of society are being continuously tried in modern society, breaking bounds from the previous experimental environment. However, in order for robots to be applied to the real environment, the production cost, which is considered to be the biggest disadvantage of commercializing the existing robot platform, and the adaptability issue in working environments in terms of human standards must be considered. This paper proposes a robot of biped walking form, which conforms to the degree of freedom and the size of human beings. By replacing the encoder with a combined module of potentiometer, the high cost of production is reduced, and by adopting a modular design that is easy to replace parts, the maintenance cost of robots is reduced. Finally, stability was verified by applying a walking pattern to two dummy robots of different sizes and motor arrangements. In this paper, after developing the real biped walking robots, the performance and usability were verified through walking experiments and applying the walking pattern using the developed robots.

For stable walking of various biped walking robots(BWR), we need to know the kinematics, dynamics and the Zero Moment of Point(ZMP) which are not easy to analyze analytically. In this reason, we developed a simulation program for BWRs composed of 4 degree-of-freedom upper-part body and 12 degree-of-freedom lower-part of the body. To operate the motion simulator for analyzing the kinematics and dynamics of BWES, inputs for the distance between legs, base angle, choice of walking type, gaits, and walking velocity are necessary. As a result, if stability condition is satisfied by the simulation, angle data for each actuator are generated automatically, and the data are transmitted to BWRS and then, they are actuated by the motion data. Finally, we validate the performance of the proposed motion simulator by applying it to a constructed small sized BWR.
This paper aims to provide a way to improve dynamic stability of biped robots against undesirable disturbances and in a slope. By using an angular velocity sensor and an acceleration sensor on its waist, we can make a medium-sized biped robot walk stably in a slope against impulsive disturbances. In addition, it is possible for the robot to walk stably in an unknown slope. The measured signals from the sensor are used for compensating the reference angles of ankle, knee, and pelvis joints. Some experiments show that the stability of the robot is much enhanced by using cheat sensors and a simple algorithm. This work helps bided robots walk more stably in real environments.
This paper proposes a locomotion pattern and a control method for biped robots with curved soles. First, since the contact point of a supporting leg may arbitrarily move back and forth on the ground, we derived the desired trajectory from a model called the Moving. Inverted Pendulum Model (MIPM) where the Zero Moment Point (ZMP) exists at the supporting point and can be moved intentionally. Secondly, a biped robot with curved soles is an under-actuated system since the supporting point contacting with a point on the ground has no actuator during the single supporting phase. Therefore, this paper proposes a computed-torque control for this under-actuated system using decoupled dynamic equations. A series of computer simulations with a 7-DOF biped robot with curved soles shows that the proposed walking pattern and control method are effective and allow the biped robot to walk fast and stably, and move more like human beings. Also, it is shown that the curved sole shape has superior energy consumption compared to flat soles, and greater efficiency in ascending and descending the stairs.
This paper discusses the method of moving object detection for biped robot walking. Most researches on vision based object detection have mostly focused on fixed camera based algorithm itself. However, developing vision systems for biped walking robot is an important and urgent issue since hired walking robots are ultimately developed not only for researches but to be utilized in real life. In the research, method for moving object detection has been developed for task assignment and execution of biped robot as well as for human robot interaction (HRI) system. But these methods are not suitable to biped walking robot. So, we suggest the advanced method which is suitable to biped walking robot platform. For carrying out certain tasks, an object detecting system using modified optical flow algorithm by wireless vision camera is implemented in a biped walking robot.
This paper proposes an optimal trajectory generation method for biped robots for walking up-and-down stairs using a Real-Coded Genetic Algorithm (RCGA). The RCGA is most effective in minimizing the total consumption energy of a multi-dof biped robot. Each joint angle trajectory is defined as a 4-th order polynomial of which the coefficients are chromosomes or design variables to approximate the walking gait. Constraints are divided into equalities and inequalities. First, equality constraints consist of initial conditions and repeatability conditions with respect to each joint angle and angular velocity at the start and end of a stride period. Next, inequality constraints include collision prevention conditions of a swing leg, singular prevention conditions, and stability conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed optimal trajectory is shown in computer simulations with a 6-dof biped robot model that consists of seven links in the sagittal plane. The optimal trajectory is more efficient than that generated by the Modified Gravity-Compensated Inverted Pendulum Mode (MGCIPM). And various trajectories generated by the proposed GA method are analyzed from the viewpoint of the consumption energy: walking on even ground, ascending stairs, and descending stairs.

This paper proposes an adaptive trajectory generation strategy of using on-line ZMP information and an impedance control method for biped robots. Since robots experience various disturbances during their locomotion, their walking mechanism should have the robustness against those disturbances, which requires an on-line adaptation capability. In this context, an on-line trajectory planner is proposed to compensate the required moment for recovering stability. The ZMP equation and sensed ZMP information are used in this trajectory generation strategy. In order to control a biped robot to be able to walk stably, its controller should guarantee stable footing at the moment of feet contacts with the ground as well as maintaining good trajectory tracking performance. Otherwise, the stability of robot will be significantly compromised. To reduce the magnitude of an impact and guarantee a stable footing when a foot contacts with the ground, this paper. proposes to increase the damping of the leg drastically and to modify the reference trajectory of the leg. In the proposed control scheme, the constrained leg is controlled by impedance control using the impedance model with respect to the base link. Computer simulations performed with a 3-dof environment model that consists of combination of a nonlinear and linear compliant contact model show that the proposed controller performs well and that it has robustness against unknown uneven surface. Moreover, the biped robot with the proposed trajectory generator can walk even when it is pushed with a certain amount of external force.
This paper aims to generate the static walking pattern of a biped robot on stairs and to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm using its ankle and pelvis. Differently from the previous biped robots, our biped robot has the peculiar mechanism on its ankle and pelvis. By using this mechanism, we can reduce the load in the knee when a biped robot ascends the stairs. This means that a biped robot can climb up a higher step. The stairs walking trajectory that is separated into a ankle trajectory and a pelvis trajectory is generated by cubic spline interpolation. Finally, we confirm the feasibility of the proposed algorithm through the computer simulation and the real walking experiment.
Generating motion of center of mass for biped robots is a challenging issue since biped robots can easily lose balance due to limited contact area between foot and ground. In this paper, we propose force control method to generate high-speed motion of the center of mass for horizontal direction without losing balancing condition. Contact consistent multi-body dynamics of the robot is used to calculate force for horizontal direction of the center of mass considering balance. The calculated force is applied for acceleration or deceleration of the center of mass to generate high speed motion. The linear inverted pendulum model is used to estimate motion of the center of mass and the estimated motion is used to select either maximum or minimum force to stop at goal position. The proposed method is verified by experiments using 12-DOF torque controlled human sized legged robot.
