  • The selection of meaningful clinical tests and its reference values from a high-dimensional clinical data with imbalanced class distribution, one class is represented by a large number of examples while the other is represented by only a few, is an important issue for differential diagnosis between similar diseases, but difficult. For this purpose, this study introduces methods based on the concepts of both discernibility matrix and function in rough set theory (RST) with two discretization approaches, equal width and frequency discretization. Here these discretization approaches are used to define the reference values for clinical tests, and the discernibility matrix and function are used to extract a subset of significant clinical tests from the translated nominal attribute values. To show its applicability in the differential diagnosis problem, we have applied it to extract the significant clinical tests and its reference values between normal (N = 351) and abnormal group (N = 101) with either cholecystitis or cholelithiasis disease. In addition, we investigated not only the selected significant clinical tests and the variations of its reference values, but also the average predictive accuracies on four evaluation criteria, i.e., accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and geometric mean, during l0-fold cross validation. From the experimental results, we confirmed that two discretization approaches based rough set approximation methods with relative frequency give better results than those with absolute frequency, in the evaluation criteria (i.e., average geometric mean). Thus it shows that the prediction model using relative frequency can be used effectively in classification and prediction problems of the clinical data with imbalanced class distribution.

  • Cancer is one of the most challenging human diseases. Current clinical methods have limitations for early-stage cancer diagnosis and effective therapy. Moreover, current surgical methods to remove tumors are not precise enough and chemotherapy destroys normal tissues as well as malignant tumors, resulting in severe side effects such as hair loss, vomiting, diarrhea, and blood disorders. Recently, nanotechnology using nano-sized particles suggests advanced solutions to overcome the limitations. Various nanoparticles have been reported for more accurate diagnosis and minimized side effects. However, current nanoparticles still show limited targeting accuracy for cancer generally below 5% injection dosage. Therefore, herein we report a new nanoparticle inducing device(NID) to guide the nanoparticles externally by using both variable magnetic fields and blood flows. NID can be a promising approach to improve targeting accuracy for drug delivery using iron oxide nanoparticles.

  • This papaer presents a new algorithm for the P-wave detection in the ECG signal. Digital differentiation method (7-point derivative) is used for detecting P-waves exactly. This algorithm can detect various parameters of PR, PP, RR interval, which are important to diagnosis AV blocks and WPW syndrome. Especially, this algorithm can detect P-waves very efficiently not only in well-preprocessed waves but in pccr waves with noise and artifact. And it enables to develope more reliable automatic diagnosis algorithm.

  • A medical teleconferencing and medical image transmision system has been developed for diagnosis of the medical images between the medical doctors who are far away. The medical teleconferencing system transmits the voice and image of the doctors using the video and audio capture boards. The medical image transmission system software uses the medical image standard DICOM 3.0 for the future expansibility and the open system interconectivity. The medical images usually use CR images.

  • Hepatic hemangiomas infrequently exhibit atypical imaging features, which may cause diagnostic confusion with hepatic malignancies and lead to unnecessary surgery. We report a rare case of multilocular cystic hemangioma of the liver mimicking a mucinous cystic neoplasm of the liver in a 48-year-old female, focusing on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging features and their differential diagnosis.

  • This paper presents an integrated fault diagnosis algorithm for driving motor of In-wheel independent drive electric vehicle. Especially, this paper proposes a method that integrated the high level fault diagnosis and the low level fault diagnosis in order to improve a robustness and performance of the fault diagnosis system. The high level fault diagnosis is performed using the vehicle dynamics analysis and the low level fault diagnosis is carried using the motor system analysis. The validity of the high level fault diagnosis algorithms was verified through $Carsim^{(R)}$ and MATLAB/$Simulink^{(R)}$ cosimulation and the low level fault diagnosis's validity was shown by applying it to a MATLAB/$Simulink^{(R)}$ interior permanent magnet synchronous motor control system. Finally, this paper presents a fault diagnosis strategy by combining the high level fault diagnosis and the low level fault diagnosis.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide basic data necessary for educating nursing students by establishing a desirable sense of ethics values. Method: In this descriptive research, 101 nursing students and 191 non-nursing students (in other health related fields) from Daejeon City were selected. Tools used for data analysis were descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe test and step wise multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 12.0 version. Results: Average scores for consciousness of biomedical ethics in nursing students was 2.94, and in non-nursing students, 2.77. When differences in the consciousness of biomedical ethics of nursing and non-nursing students were compared, nursing students had significantly higher scores for artificial abortion, artificial insemination, prenatal diagnosis of fetus, right to life of newborn, euthanasia, organ transplantation and human biotechnology, but significantly lower for brain death. Variables which influenced consciousness of biomedical ethics were religion and economic status in the nursing students and intent to attend a class in biomedical ethics, quantity and quality of biomedical ethics in the current curriculum and religion in the non-nursing students. Conclusion: Continuing educational programs need to be considered and attention given to the significant variables that can promote consciousness of biomedical ethics in nursing students.

  • Cancer remains a life-threatening disease and accounts for the major mortality rates worldwide. The practice of using biomarkers for early detection, staging, and customized therapy may increase cancer patients' survival. Deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) are a family of proteases that remove ubiquitin tags from proteins of interest undergoing proteasomal degradation. DUBs play several functional roles other than deubiquitination. One of the important roles of DUBs is regulation of tumor progression. Several reports have suggested that the DUB family members were highly-elevated in various cancer cells and tissues in different stages of cancer. These findings suggest that the DUBs could be used as drug targets in cancer therapeutics. In this review, we recapitulate the role of the DUB family members, including ubiquitin-specific protease, otubain protease, and important candidates from other family members. Our aim was to better understand the connection between DUB expression profiles and cancers to allow researchers to design inhibitors or gene therapies to improve diagnosis and prognosis of cancers.
