Hippocampus and Schizophrenia (해마와 정신분열병)

  • Schizophrenics suffer not only psychotic symptoms but also cognitive deficits such as an attentional difficulty, memory impairment, poor abstraction, etc. These cognitive abnormalities have been reported to be significantly related to the social and occupational outcome in schizophrenia. Thus, it is important to explore the cause and pathophysiology for the cognitive abnormalities in patients with schizophrenia. In this regard, hippocampus is one of the most promising brain areas to search for the clue because it is closely involved in memory related function. In fact, during the past several decades, there have been extensive studies supporting hippocampal abnormalities as a cause of schizophrenia in both clinical and preclinical field. In this review, basic anatomical knowledge about hippocampus and major findings of preclinical and clinical studies which investigated the correlation between schizophrenia and hippocampus were highlighted. The contents are 1) anatomical structure of hippocampus, 2) neuronal pathway and receptor distribution in hippocampus, 3) function of hippocampus, 4) hippocampal animal model for schizophrenia, 5) hippocampus-related studies on antipsychotic drugs, and 6) clinical studies in hippocampus in patients with schizophrenia.

Characterization and function of human Ly-6/uPAR molecules

  • Human Ly-6/uPAR molecules are a superfamily composed of two subfamilies; one is the membrane bound proteins with a GPI-anchor and the other are secreted proteins without the GPI-anchor. Ly-6/uPAR molecules have remarkable amino acid homology through a distinctive 8-10 cysteine-rich domain that is associated predominantly with O-linked glycans. These molecules are encoded by multiple tightly linked genes located on Chr. 8q23, and have a conserved genomic organization. Ly-6/uPAR molecules have an interesting expression pattern during hematopoiesis and on specific tumors indicating that Ly-6/uPAR molecules are associated with development of the immune system and carcinogenesis. Thus, Ly-6/uPAR molecules are useful antigens for diagnostic and therapeutic targets. This review summarizes our understanding of human Ly-6/uPAR molecules with regard to molecular structure as well as what is known about their function in normal and malignant tissues and suggest Ly-6/uPAR molecules as target antigens for cancer immunotherapy.

Estimating the Biological Growth Function of Korean Anchovy: A Maximum Entropy Approach (한국 연근해 멸치자원량 추정 - Maximum Entropy기법의 응용 -)

  • One of the main issues in natural resource economics is estimating the amount of stock and the biological growth functions of renewable natural resources. Since the stock level is not directly observed the usual econometric approaches cannot be employed for this purpose. The maximum entropy approach has been suggested as a useful alternative to estimate the dynamic model of natural resource use. This study estimates the stock and the growth function of Korean anchovy using the data for yield and yield efforts. The results show that the current level of anchovy yield exceeds its maximum sustainable yield, which implies that the stock will decrease substantially over time.

Protein Inhibition Precipitation of Calcium Phosphate in Human Saliva (인간 타액내 항 린산칼슘 침전 단백질)

  • The Purpose of this article is to describe the biochemical properties and biological functions of several salivary proteins that possess the unusual properties of inhibiting spontaneous and secondary precipitation of calcium phosphate. This function is very important since human salivary secretion is supersaturated with respect to calcium phosphate. Biological function of statherin, proline rich protein (PRP) and histidine rich protein (HRP) is to inhibit precipitation of calcium phosphate in salivary glands, in the oral fluids, and onto tooth surfaces. The resulting supersaturated state of the salivary secretions contributes a protective and reparative environment which is important for the integrity of the tooth. Beneficial consequences of salivary supersaturation with respect to calcium phosphate are selectively expressed in the oral cavity- that is, protection is provided for the dental enamel-while undesirable consequences, for example, precipitation of calcium phosphates in the salivary glands and onto the teeth do not occur. Purification and structural characteristics of these proteins as well as clinical significance of functions of each protein will be discussed.

Subclinical Hypothyroidism during Quetiapine Treatment : A Case Report (Quetiapine 치료 중 발생한 무증상 갑상선 기능저하증 1례)

  • Quetiapine is an atypical antipsychotic drug with a benign side effect profile. However, recent studies have reported that thyroid dysfunction is associated with quetiapine treatment. The authors report a patient with DSM-IV bipolar I disorder who developed subclinical hypothyroidism during quetiapine treatment. The patient showed no significant clinical symptoms, but only abnormal thyroid function test findings including antithyroglobulin antibody. The abnormal thyroid function test findings were normalized after discontinuation of quetiapine. The subclinical hypothyroidism developed during quetiapine treatment may be associated with autoimmune process.

Antennal Sensory Organs in the Female Millipede Orthomorphella pekuensis (Polydesmida: Paradoxosomatidae)

  • The fine structural characteristics of the antennal sensory organs of a female millipede, Orthomorphella pekuensis, were observed with field emission scanning electron microscopy. On the surface of the antenna, four basic types of sensory receptor with the function of either mechanical or olfactory reception are identified in this female millipede. Of these, chaetiform sensilla (CS) and trichoid sensilla (TS) are related to mechanical reception, and four large apical cone sensilla (AS) and three subtypes of basiconic sensilla ($BS_1,\;BS_2,\;BS_3$) are likely to function in olfactory reception, as these receptors have porous structure commonly. Although this millipede also possess a number of primary or secondary sexual characters to improve the efficiency of reproduction, we could not observe their prominent sexually dimorphic characters in the antennal sensilla with the exception of minor structural and numerical differences.

Relationships between Psychotic Symptoms and Cognitive Functions in Schizophrenic Patients (정신분열병 환자에서 정신병적 증상과 인지기능의 관련성)

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate relationships between psychotic symptoms and cognitive functions in schizophrenia. Methods : The study group was composed of 36 schizophrenic patients. Positive, negative, and disorganization symptoms were assessed using the PANSS. Verbal, visuospatial, attention, memory, and executive functions were assessed using a battery of cognitive tests. Results : Correlation analysis between symptom vs. cognitive measures showed that (a) positive symptoms were significantly correlated with no cognitive measures, (b) negative symptoms were significantly correlated with all cognitive measures, and (c) disorganization symptoms were significantly correlated with executive and memory measures. Correlation analyses between symptom vs. cognitive factors showed that negative-disorganization factor is significantly correlated with executive-memory factor. Conclusion : Significant relationships were confined mostly to frontal symptoms vs. frontal cognitive functions. Thus, the relationships may be mediated mainly by variations in severity of frontal pathology among patients.

Effect of Program Promoting Intention to Exercise Performance Based Theory of Planned Behavior in the Elderly (농촌 지역 퇴행성 관절염 노인을 대상으로 한 운동수행 의도 증진프로그램의 효과)

  • Purpose: This study is aimed at grasping the benefit/effect of program promoting intention to exercise performance based theory of planned behavior in the elderly who live in the rural areas with degenerative joint diseases (DJDs). Methods: There were 2 groups; 32 people in the experimental group and 24 in the control group, all above the age of 60. Program promoting intention to exercise performance was applied to the experimental group for 12 weeks. Results: Compared to the control group, the experimental group showed a significant the increase of attitude towards exercise, subjective norm, perceived behavior control, exercising intention, and exercise performance. Also, pain as a physical function, joint stiffness, ADLs, body flexibility, parallel, perceived health state as a psychological function, and life satisfaction were significantly improved. Conclusion: We expect that program promoting intention to exercise performance is used in nursing practice for the elderly with DJDs are needed to manage lifestyle.

The Choice of an Optimal Growth Function Considering Environmental Factors and Production Style (생산방식과 환경요인들을 고려한 최적성장함수의 선택에 관한 연구)

  • This paper examined the statistical goodness-of-fit tests for biological growth model in bioeconomic analysis. Some authors estimated usually growth function for fish in the world. However, few studies have estimated growth equations for the bivalve species. Thus, this paper studied the common functional forms of fitting growth equations for cham scallops considering environmental factors and production styles. The following functional forms are considered: linear, log-reciprocal, double log, polynomial and linear with interactions. Results of fitting these various functional forms with real data are compared and evaluated using standard statistical goodness-of-fit tests. Results also indicate that log-reciprocal function is statistically the best fit to the real data. Therefore, the log-reciprocal function is decided the best function describing cham scallop biological growth and hence might be useful for economic evaluation(i.e., optimal harvesting time).
