Objectives : The aim of this study was to suggest a new method to estimate the resistance by acupoint compositions by using the multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis(MF-BIA) of 5 kHz, 50 kHz and 200 kHz within 2 cm of acupoints as a local segment. Moreover, we try to confirm the relation to between measured resistance at skin surface and measured resistance by various manual acupuncture needle insertion depth. Methods : Ten male subjects participated in this study. We measured the resistance at left/right ST36 at skin surface and various manual acupuncture needle insertion depth(skin, 5 mm, 10 mm, 15 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm and 30 mm). Results : It was also observed that the all measured resistances were the highest at 5 kHz and the lowest at 200 kHz. There were significant differences at 5 kHz, 50 kHz and 200 kHz between measured resistance at skin surface and measured resistance by various manual acupuncture needle insertion depth(p<0.05). There was no significant difference in the left and right identical acupoints under the identical condition(p>0.05). Conclusions : We conclude that the measured resistance at skin surface has limitation as to reflect the information of tissue. However, the measured resistance at each frequency was changed as similar pattern by different insertion depth. Hence, we confirmed the possibility of assumption on information of tissue which was expected to locate an acupoint.
In this study, in order to improve the disadvantages of the environmental error of the infusion set that performs infusion therapy in the existing clinical practice and to maximize the user's convenience by miniaturizing the existing infusion pump system, the structure of the muscle pump of the human vein was imitated. As a double check valve method, a method for preventing the backflow of fluid and discharging a constant fluid in one direction by external pressure was proposed. The proposed bio-mimic muscle pump uses a check valve that controls the flow of fluid in one direction and a silicone tube with elasticity, and a chamber is constructed. A peristaltic pump for applying intermittent pressure to the tube chamber was constructed using a multi-cam structure roller. In order to verify the performance of the proposed pump, optimization was performed while changing the number of multi-cam rollers and adjusting the speed of the roller driving motor, and the reproducibility of the instantaneous discharge amount and the continuous discharge amount of the pump was compared and tested. The performance of the muscle pump proposed in this study was verified through experiments that it can inject up to 1L of fluid within 12 hours, and that it is possible to inject the fluid with an accuracy of ±0.1ml. Real-time monitoring of the fluid injection volume through the bio-mimic muscle pump proposed in this study not only increases the convenience of the administrator, but also provides a precise fluid administration environment to more patients at a low cost, and additionally applies bubble detection and occlusion detection technology If so, it is believed that a safer medical environment can be provided to patients.
Background: Anticancer agents induce a variety of adverse effects when administered to cancer patients. Busulfan is a known antileukemia agent. When administered for treatment of leukemia in young patients, busulfan could cause damage to the male reproductive system as one of its adverse effects, resulting in sterility. Methods: We investigated the effects of Korean Red Ginseng extract (KRGE) on busulfan-induced damage and/or dysfunction of the male reproductive system. Results: We found that administration of busulfan to mice: decreased testis weight; caused testicular histological damage; reduced the total number of sperm, sperm motility, serum testosterone concentration; and eventually, litter size. Preadministration of KRGE partially attenuated various busulfan-induced damages to the male reproductive system. These results indicate that KRGE has a protective effect against busulfan-induced damage to the male reproduction system. Conclusion: The present study shows a possibility that KRGE could be applied as a useful agent to prevent or protect the male reproductive system from the adverse side effects induced by administration of anticancer agents such as busulfan.
A bioequivalence of $Melax^{TM}$ capsules (Chong Kun Dang Pharm., Korea) and $Mobic^{TM}$ capsules (Boehringer Ingelheim Korea) was evaluated according to the guideline of Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA). Single 15 mg dose of meloxicam of each medicine was administered orally to 24 healthy male volunteers. This study was performed in a $2\;{\times}\;2$ crossover design. Concentrations of meloxicam in human plasma were monitored by a high-performance liquid chromatography. $AUC_t$ (the area under the plasma concentration-time curve from time zero to 72 hr) was calculated by the linear trapezoidal rule method. $C_{max}$ (maximum plasma drug concentration) and $T_{max}$ (time to reach $C_{max}$) were compiled from the plasma concentration-time data. Analysis of variance was performed using logarithmically transformed $AUC_t$ and $C_{max}$. No significant sequence effect was found for all of the bioavailability parameters. The 90% confidence intervals of the $AUC_t$ ratio and the $C_{max}$ ratio for $Melax^{TM}/Mobic^{TM}$ were 0.95 - 1.04 and 0.98 - 1.14, respectively. This study demonstrated a bioequivalence of $Melax^{TM}$ and $Mobic^{TM}$ with respect to the rate and extent of absorption.
3D printing technology has been used in various fields such as materials science, manufacturing, education, and medical field. A number of research are underway to improve the 3D printing technology. Recently, the use of 3D printing technology for fabricating an artificial tissue, organ and bone through the laminating of cell and biocompatible material has been introduced and this could make the conformity with the desired shape or pattern for producing human entire organs for transplantation. This special printing technique is known as "3D Bio-Printing", which has potential in biomedical application including patient-customized organ out-put. In this paper, we describe the current 3D bio-printing technology, and bio-materials used in it and present it's practical applications.
K-$BEtest^{(R)}$ is a well known program for bioequivalence test using a $2{\times}2$ design. Lee et al.(1998) and Park et al.(1999) suggested a $3{\times}3$ and $3{\times}2$ design, and also discussed their benefits. We developed a computer program, called BioEquiv, which can analyze some complex experimental designs such as, $3{\times}3$ design and $3{\times}2$ design including a standard $2{\times}2$ design. This program is a user-friendly one and overcomes the disadvantages of K-$BEtest^{(R)}$. The detailed statistical formula and structure of BioEquiv are presented with some examples. The comparison between K-$BEtest^{(R)}$ and BioEquiv are given with actual data analysis. BioEquiv is able to present a table of ANOVA test over some complex experimental designs. Moreover K-$BEtest^{(R)}$ and BioEquiv draw the same result when data consists of $2{\times}2$ design.
As the rising attention to the medical and healthcare issue, Bio-MEMS (Micro electro mechanical systems) platform such as bio sensor, cell culture system, and microfluidics device has been studied extensively. Bio-MEMS platform mostly has high resolution structure made by biocompatible material such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). In addition, three dimension structure has been applied to the bio-MEMS. Lithography can be used to fabricate complex structure by multiple process, however, non-rectangular cross section can be implemented by introducing optical apparatus to lithography technic. X-ray lithography can be used even for sub-micron scale. Here in, we demonstrated lines with round shape cross section using the tilted gold absorber which was deposited on the oblique structure as the X-ray mask. This structure was used as a mold for PDMS. Molded PDMS was applied to the cell culture platform. Moreover, molded PDMS was bonded to flat PDMS to utilize to the sub-micro channel. This work has potential to the large area bio-MEMS.
Cell separation from a heterogenous mixture sample is an essential process for downstream analysis in biological, chemical, and clinical applications. This study demonstrates an integrated hybrid device of the viscoelastic focusing in a straight rectangular channel and subsequent size-based separation using acoustophoresis to attain high efficiency and separation tunability. For particle pre-alignment in a viscoelastic fluid, the flow rate higher than 10 μl/min was required. Surface acoustic wave-based lateral migration of particles with different sizes (13 and 27 ㎛) was examined at various applied voltages and flow rate conditions. Therefore, the flow rate of 100 μl/min and the applied voltage of 20 Vpp can be used for size-based particle separation.
