The research of 3-dimensional (3-D) scaffold for tissue engineering has been widely investigated as the importance of the 3-D scaffold increased. 3-D scaffold is needed to support for cells to proliferate and maintain their biological functions. Furthermore, its architecture defines the shape of the new bone and cartilage growth. Polycaprolactone (PCL) has been one of the most promising materials for fabricating 3-D scaffold owing to its excellent mechanical property and biocompatibility. However, there are practical problems for using it, in vitro and in vivo; extracellular matrix components and nutrients cannot penetrate into the inner space of scaffold, due to its hydrophobic property, and thus cell seeding and attachment onto the inner surface remain as a challenge. Thus, the surface modification strategy of 3-D PCL scaffold is prerequisite for successful tissue engineering. Herein, we utilized a mussel-inspired approach for surface modification of 3-D PCL scaffold. Modification of 3-D PCL scaffolds was carried out by simple immersion of scaffolds into the dopamine solution and stimulated body fluid, and as a result, hydroxyapatite-immobilized 3-D PCL scaffolds were obtained. After surface modification, the wettability of 3-D PCL scaffold was considerably changed, and infiltration of the pre-osteoblastic cells into the 3-D scaffold followed by the attachment onto the surface was successfully achieved.
TDoA(Time Difference of Arrival)

In this paper, we present a deployable bio-inspired robot called the Pillbot-light, which utilizes a safe autonomous navigation system. The Pillbot-light is mounted the station robot, and can be operated in a disaster relief operation or military operation. However, the Pilbot-light has a challenge to navigate autonomously because the Pilbot-light cannot be equipped with various sensors. As a result, we propose a new robot system for autonomous navigation that the station robot controls Pillbot-light equipped with vision camera and CPU of high performance. This system detects obstacles based on the edge extraction using vision camera. Also, it cannot only achieve path planning using the hazard cost function, but also localization using the Particle Filter. And this system is verified by simulation and experiment.
In this paper, we suggest a phase difference algorithm inspired by weakly electric fish. Weakly electric fish is a fish which generates electric field though its electric organ in the tail. The weakly electric fish search for prey and detect an object by using electrolocation. The weakly electric fish have Jamming Avoidance Response (JAR) to avoid jamming signal. One of pulse-type weakly electric fish Gymnotus carapo also have JAR to reduce the probability of coincidence of pulses. We analyze this response signal and design the phase difference algorithm. We expect that simple algorithm inspired by weakly electric fish can be used in many engineering fields.
This paper proposes an insect behavior-inspired routing algorithm for large-scale wireless mesh networks. The proposed algorithm is adapted from the behavior of an insect called Bombyx mori, a male silkmoth. Its unique behavior is its flying technique to find the source of pheromones. The algorithm consists of two steps: the shortest-path algorithm and the zigzag-path algorithm. First, the shortest-path algorithm is employed to transmit data. After half of the total hops, the zigzag-path algorithm, which is based on the movement of the male B. mori, is applied. In order to adapt the biological behavior to large-scale wireless mesh networks, we use a mesh topology for implementing the algorithm. Simulation results show that the total energy used and the decision time for routing of the proposed algorithm are improved under certain conditions.
This paper proposes a novel optimization algorithm inspired by bacteria behavior patterns for foraging. Most bacteria can trace attractant chemical molecules for foraging. This tracing capability of bacteria called chemotaxis might be optimized for foraging because it has been evolved for few millenniums. From this observation, we developed a new optimization algorithm based on the chemotaxis of bacteria in this paper. We first define behavior and decision rules based on the behavior patterns of bacteria and then devise an optimization algorithm with these behavior and decision rules. Generally bacteria have a quorum sensing mechanism that makes it possible to effectively forage, but we leave its implementation as a further work for simplicity. Thereby, we call our algorithm a simple bacteria cooperative optimization (BCO) algorithm. Our simple BCO is tested with four function optimization problems on various' parameters of the algorithm. It was found from experiments that the simple BCO can be a good framework for optimization.
In this paper, a forearm Mechanism design inspired by ligamentous structure of the human body is proposed. The proposed mechanism consists of four rigid bodies and fourteen wires without any mechanical joints. Actually, the mechanism is based on the concept of the tensegrity structure. Therefore, the proposed mechanism has inherently compliant characteristics due to the flexibility of the wires composing the structure. Rigid bodies and wires of the mechanism mimic bones and major ligaments in the forearm of the human. The proposed mechanism is classified as one of the interconnected hybrid flexure systems. The analysis method of the degree of freedom (DOF) of the proposed mechanism is also introduced through analyzing technique of the interconnected hybrid flexure systems, in this paper. Ultimately, the proposed mechanism, whose structure is complicated with rigid bodies and wires, mathematically drives that it has 3-DOFs.

Nanoscale observation of attachment systems of animals has revealed various exquisite multiscale architectures for essential functions such as gecko's locomotion, beetles' wing fixation, octopuses' sucking and crawling. In particular, the hierarchical 3-dimensional hexanonal nano-architectures in the tree frog's adhesion is known to have the capability of the enhancement of adhesion forces on the wet or rough surfaces due to the conformal contacts against rough surfaces and water-drainable micro channels. Here, we report that tree frog-inspired patches using unique artificial 3-dimensional hexagonal structures can be exploited to form reversibly enhanced adhesion against various highly curved and rough surfaces in dry and wet condition. To investigate the adhesion effect of micro-channels, we changed the arrangement of microstructure and spacing gaps between micro-channels. In addition, we introduced the 3-dimensional hexagonal hierarchical architectures to artificial patches to enhance to conformal contacts on the various rough surfaces such as skin and organs. Using the robust adhesion properties, we demonstrated the self-drainable and comfortable skin-attachable devices which can measure EKG (electrokardiogramme) for in-vitro diagnostics. As a result, bio-inspired programmable nano-architectures can be applied in versatile devices such as, medical patches, skin-attachable electronics etc., which would shed light on future smart, directional and reversible adhesion systems.
