  • Compound eyes in nature present intriguing topics in physiological optics due to their unique optical scheme for imaging. For example, a bee's eye has thousands of integrated photonic units called ommatidia spherically arranged along a curvilinear surface so that each unit points in a different direction. The omni-directionally arranged ommatidium collects incident light with a narrow range of angular acceptance and independently contributes to the capability of wide field-of-view (FOV) detection. Artificial implementation of compound eyes has attracted a great deal of research interest because the wide FOV exhibits a huge potential for medical, industrial, and military applications. So far, imaging with a FOV over $90^{\circ}$ has been achieved only with fisheye lenses which rely on bulky and expensive multiple lenses and require stringent alignment. In this talk, we will discuss about the spherical 3D arrangement of the photonic structures of biologically inspired artificial compound eyes in a small form-factor to have and the functional and anatomical similiarity with natural compound eyes.

  • Integration of wind generators with the conventional power plants will raise operational challenges to the electric power utilities due to the uncertainty of wind availability. Thus, the Generation Scheduling (GS) among the online generating units has become crucial. This process can be formulated mathematically as an optimization problem. The GS problem of wind integrated power system is inherently complex because the formulation involves non-linear operational characteristics of generating units, system and operational constraints. As the robust tool is viable to address the chosen problem, the modern bio-inspired algorithm namely, Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm is chosen as the main optimization tool. The intended algorithm is implemented on the standard test systems and the attained numerical results are compared with the earlier reports. The comparison clearly indicates the intended tool is robust and a promising alternative for solving GS problems.

  • Biological sensory systems continuously monitor and analyze changes in real-world environments that are relevant to an animal's specific behavioral needs and goals. Understanding the sensory mechanisms and information processing principles that biological systems utilize for efficient sensory data acquisition may provide useful guidance for the design of smart-sensing systems in engineering applications. Weakly electric fish, which use self-generated electrical energy to actively sense their environment, provide an excellent model system for studying biological principles of sensory data acquisition. The electrosensory system enables these fish to hunt and navigate at night without the use of visual cues. To achieve reliable, real-time task performance, the electrosensory system implements a number of smart sensing strategies, including efficient stimulus encoding, multi-scale virtual sensor arrays, task-dependent filtering and online subtraction of sensory expectation.

  • Autonomous navigating algorithms for mobile robots have been proved to be a difficult task. Based on the excellent homing performance shown by many insects, bio-inspired navigation algorithms for robotic experiments have been widely researched and applied to the design of navigational strategies for mobile robots. In this paper, among them, we analyze two simple landmark navigation methods their strengths and limits. We investigate the effect of the occlusion problem mainly, which is an important yet tough problem in many landmark navigation algorithms. In the point of view of the error of homing vector and the performance of the homing paths in the environment with artificial occlusions, we investigate the effect of occlusion problem in both methods in order to further study on solutions.

  • In this paper, we propose a method of constructing equation using bio-inspired emergent and evolutionary concepts. This method is algorithm that is based on the characteristics of the biological DNA and growth of plants. Here is. we propose a constructing method to make a DNA coding method for production rule of L-system. L-system is based on so-called the parallel rewriting mechanism. The DNA coding method has no limitation in expressing the production rule of L-system. Evolutionary algorithms motivated by Darwinian natural selection are population based searching methods and the high performance of which is highly dependent on the representation of solution space. In order to verify the effectiveness of our scheme, we apply it to one step ahead prediction of Mackey-Glass time series.

  • A small and lightweight crawling robots have been actively studied thanks to their outstanding mobility and maneuverability. Those robots can navigate into more confined spaces that larger robots are unable to reach or enter such as debris and caves. In this paper, we propose a milli-scale hexapedal robot based on planar linkage design. To make this possible, two necessary conditions for successful crawling are satisfied: thrust force from the ground and aerial phase while running. These conditions are achieved through a newly developed leg design. The robot has a pair of legs and each leg has three feet. Those feet alternatively moves based on 1DOF planar linkage. This linkage is installed at each side of the robot and finally the robot shows the alternating gait and aerial phase during running. As a result, the robot runs with the crawling speed of 0.9 m/s.
