  • Several squarylium dyes, derived from benzothiazole and indoles, were synthesized as a potential NIR dyes with absorption in the 700-900 nm region. These chromophores were induced much more bathochromic shift in the absorption maximum of the compound relative to the neutral parent squarylium dyes which we were described before. The squaryliums offer a convenient way of linking the dye to functional substrates and may be an advantage to be potential chromophores for NIR-absorbing, NIR-Cut-off filter, PDT(Photo Dynamic Therapy) materials.

  • The annals of Joseon Dynasty designated as a national treasure No. 151 and a UNESCO World Memory are among the greatest archives that should be preserved permanently and inherited to future generations through the proven scientific conservation method. The annals of Joseon Dynasty in the custody of the National Archives of Korea as the sole original archive, has been restricted from the direct physical and chemical approaches. In this study, it is to develop a systematic conservation management scheme, based on the conservation state of the annals. Four books from the annals were selected out of 848 books and their moisture contents and optical property profiles were measured through the books. All the defects previously and newly found were pictured in 10~100 magnifications. The wire marks left on the Hanji's of the annals were analyzed. It was found that water damages and paper molds were prevalent in all four annals selected, and it was recommended to conduct more research for the conservation of those damaged areas. It turned out that various qualities of Hanji's were used for the time of publishing the annals because moisture content, optical properties, and wire mark intervals were quite different between papers even within one book.

  • UV-curable acrylic Pressure-sensitive adhesives (Acrylic PSAs) are used in many different parts in the world. A wafer manufacture process which is based on semiconductor industry is one thing. We have used acrylic PSAs whose thickness is different from $20{\mu}m$ to $30{\mu}m$ in wafer manufacture process so far. But as wafers become more thinner, acrylic PSAs are supposed to satisfy the requirements such as proper adhesion performance. The main purpose of this research is studying proper adhesion performance and UV-curing behavior of UV-curable acrylic PSAs with very thin thickness and then determining optimized conditions to raise the efficiency of thin wafer production. Acrylic PSAs contain 2-Ethylhexyl Acrylate (2-EHA), Acrylic Acid (AA) and Butyl Acrylate (BA). Ethyl acetate (EtAc) is used as solvent. The acrylic PSAs are obtained using solvent polymerization. Thickness of UV-curable acrylic PSAs is different from $10{\sim}30{\mu}m$. By peel strength and probe tack, adhesion performance and UV curing behavior of acrylic PSA are concerned.

  • In filler loaded paper, the size of the filler affects its strength, optical and surface properties. As the size of the filler increases, tensile strength and bulk usually increases, opacity decreases, and smoothness becomes worse. Pre-flocculation of GCC (grounded calcium carbonate) makes large diameter flocs at aqueous medium that consists of multiple GCC particles, but they collapse to 2-dimensional shape in dried paper and makes low bulk paper. The hybrid calcium carbonate (HCC) that was made by in-situ $CaCO_3$ formation between GCC in aqueous medium made high bulk paper without harming tensile strength, bulk, opacity, and smoothness. The GCC that has equivalent size as HCC failed to make high opacity and smoothness as much as HCC.

  • Needs for high ash loading in printing paper increase as green house gas (GHG) emission regulation becomes more stricter and pressure of lowering paper production cost increases. To meet the needs, a new type of filler was developed. The mixture of ground calcium carbonate (GCC) and calcium oxide was pre-floccuated with polyelectrolyte and further treated with carbon dioxide to form new calcium carbonate between GCCs. The final products were called as hybrid calcium carbonate (HCC), and its properties were compared to the GCC and the pre-flocculated GCC. Results showed increase in tensile, smoothness, opacity, and bulk for HCC.

  • A large diameter roundwood is an important element of Korean traditional buildings, Hanok, and is hard to be dried without surface cracks. Four different pretreatments, such as pre-cracking, oil heating, kerfing-oil heating and PEG impregnation, were investigated for reducing the surface cracks of large-diameter roundwood specimens during heat treatment. The roundwood specimens of pre-cracking, oil heating and kerfing-oil heating showed surface cracks during pretreatment, but that of PEG impregnation did not. It was confirmed that kerfing reduced the total crack width. Among the four pretreatments and control only the PEG impregnation roundwood specimen had no crack on both outer and inner surfaces after heat treatment. The PEG impregnation specimen shrank only 1.6% in the tangential direction while the pre-cracking did 8.0%.

  • The changes in sound absorption capability and air permeability of Malas wood after high temperature heat treatment were investigated. The average air permeability of Malas in longitudinal direction after heated under the temperature of $190^{\circ}C$ during 3 hours was about 23.48 darcys and that of control was about 3.11 darcys. The noise reduction coefficients of Malas specimens were 17% for treatment and 10% for control. The means of sound absorption coefficient of specimens in the frequency range of 50~6,400 Hz were 42% for treatment and 17% for control, respectively.

  • This research was carried out to examine the ultrasonic properties of $Phyllostachys$ $bambusoids$ Sieb et Zucc depending on three directions for providing the fundamental properties of the Korea traditional flute, Daekeum. The ultrasonic properties of $Phyllostachys$ $bambusoids$ Sieb. et Zucc were found to be different from those of wood, because of the distinctive anatomical structure of bamboo tissue. The ultrasonic velocity of peripheral zone showed higher values of all three directions. The ratio of longitudinal velocities to perpendicular velocities showed 1.16 at peripheral zone, 1.70 at central zone, 1.38 at inner zone respectively. The ratio of radial velocities to tangential velocities were measured as 1.286 at peripheral zone, 1.325 at central zone, 0.829 at inner zone respectively.

  • This study was carried out to examine properties of water resistant plywood by using serum protein adhesive which is natural, environment-friendly and human-friendly. For the preparation of the serum protein adhesive, pig blood from slaughterhouse was centrifuged and serum was separated from corpuscles and concentrated to 30% by dry weight basis. This concentrated serum protein was modified with PF resin (50% NVC) with the ratio of 9 : 2.5. Plywood made by this modified serum protein gave 1.21 N/$mm^2$ of dry bonding strength, 0.80 N/$mm^2$ of wet boil bonding strength, 0% of cyclic delamination test value, and 0.025 ppm of HCHO emission, which met the excellent super $E_0$ grade and water resistant plywood.

  • Specimens of five softwood species were heat-treated at three temperature levels of $170^{\circ}C$, $190^{\circ}C$ and $210^{\circ}C$. Their FSP's were measured by the volumetric Swelling Method. Within a species the FSP decreases as the temperature of heat treatment increases. The FSP's of the controls range from 21.0% to 32.5%, while those of the specimens heat-treated at $210^{\circ}C$ from 18.7% to 35.3%. There was no difference of basic density between the heat-treated and control specimens.
