This study was conducted to evaluate the antibacterial activity against Cronobacter sakazakii and Salmonella enteritidis as well as the sensory attributes of milk products supplemented with various concentrations (control, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.0%) of clove oil. In this study, clove oil was shown to have strong antibacterial activities. In addition, all the samples were assessed by ten researchers trained in five sensory attributes, namely, taste, flavor, color, texture, and overall acceptability. Compared to the control, 5% clove oil supplemented was the best in market milk, while in yogurt and kefir, 1.0% supplementation was the best. In terms of sensory attributes, the low score of color and flavor of market milk, yogurt, and kefir is attributed to the characteristics of the supplemented clove oil. Consequently, this study presents the possibility of producing bio-functional milk products supplemented with clove oil, and for controlling the growth of foodborne pathogenic bacteria in milk products using clove oil.

The microalga, Tetrathelmis tetrathele, is used in the development of products for the aquaculture, food, and nutraceutical industries. In the present study, we investigated whether the T. tetrathele ethanolic extract (TTE), which has anti-inflammatory properties, can confer protection against alopecia and improve scalp health, influence the proliferation of human keratinocytes, HaCaT cells, and human hair follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPC), or inhibit 5α-reductase activity. We found that TTE inhibited the production of the inflammatory mediator, nitric oxide (NO), and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) without cytotoxicity in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. In addition, TTE encouraged the proliferation of HaCaT cells and HFDPC. Our results showed that TTE had anti-inflammatory activities, proliferated HaCaT cells and HFDPC, and inhibited 5α-reductase activity. Therefore, we suggest that T. tetrathele could be a potent therapeutic agent for alopecia prevention and scalp improvement.
Adiponectin (Ad), a 30 kDa molecule, is an anti-diabetic adipokine; although derived from adipose tissue, it performs numerous activities in various other tissues. It binds to its own receptors, namely adiponectin receptor 1(AdipoR1), adiponectin receptor 2 (AdipoR2), and T-cadherin (CDH13). Ad plays several roles, especially as a regulator. It modulates lipid and glucose metabolism and promotes insulin sensitivity. This demonstrates that Ad has a robust correlation with fat metabolism. Furthermore, although Ad is not in direct contact with other tissues, including the skin, it can be delivered to them by diffusion or secretion via the endocrine system. Recently it has been reported that Ad can impact skin cell biology, underscoring its potential as a therapeutic biomarker of skin diseases. In the present review, we have discussed the association between skin cell biology and Ad. To elaborate further, we described the involvement of Ad in the biology of various types of cells in the skin, such as keratinocytes, fibroblasts, melanocytes, and immune cells. Additionally, we postulated that Ad could be employed as a therapeutic target to maintain skin homeostasis.

In this study, conditions for extraction of functional component from Nypa fruticans wurmb was optimized. The yield by extraction with 30% ethanol (LE30, 42.12%) was higher than those hot water extraction (LDW 33.32%), 50% ethanol (LE50, 40.12%) and 70% ethanol (LE70, 34.5%). The extract was purified and analyzed by GC MS. The prevailing compounds found in extract were Cyclodecasiloxane-, pentadecanoic acid, -eicosane, undecanal and tridecanoic acid. The presence of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids in ethanolic extract vindicate the use of this plant to treat many diseases in traditional medicine. The total phenolic contents in the LDW, LE30, LE50, LE70 extract were 128±1.65 mg/g, 205±2.3 mg/g, 210±4.23 mg/g and 180±5.6 mg/g, respectively. The DPPH was highest in LE70 extract (1,000 ㎍/mL, 81.14%), ABTS was highest in LE50 extract (1,000 ㎍/mL, 84.14%). The protective effects against oxidative stress in raw 264.7 cell imparted by the LE50 extract was better than those imparted by the other extracts. The findings of the present study suggest that 50% ethanol is best solvent for extraction of Nypa fruticans Wurmb, considering yield, polyphenol content, and antioxidant activities with extraction cost.
L-asparaginase (ASNase) is a therapeutic enzyme used to treat acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Currently, the most widely used ASNases are originated from bacteria. However, owing to the adverse effects of bacterial ASNases, new resources for ASNase production should be explored. Fungal enzymes are considered efficient and compatible resources of natural products for diverse applications. In particular, fungal species belonging to the genus Trichoderma are well-known producers of several commercial enzymes including cellulase, chitinase, and xylanase. However, enzyme production by marine-derived Trichoderma spp. remains to be elucidated. While screening for extracellular ASNase-producing fungi from marine environments, we found four strains showing extracellular ASNase activity. Based on the morphological and phylogenetic analyses using sequences of translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef1α), the Trichoderma isolates were identified as T. afroharzianum, T. asperellem, T. citrinoviride, and Trichoderma sp. 1. All four strains showed different ASNase activities depending on the carbon sources. T. asperellem MABIK FU00000795 showed the highest ASNase value with lactose as a carbon source. Based on our findings, we propose that marine-derived Trichoderma spp. are potential candidates for novel ASNase production.

Hwangryunhaedoktang is one of the prescriptions used in traditional medicine for skin diseases. In this study, Hwangryunhaedoktang-Gamibang (HG) was fermented with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, a probiotic lactic acid bacterium, to evaluate its potential as a functional cosmetic composition. Strains with anti-inflammatory activity were selected by isolating lactic acid bacteria from kimchi, a traditional Korean fermented food. HG was inoculated with lactic acid bacteria and the viability was measured. The supernatant was obtained by centrifugation of fermented Hwangryunhaedoktang-Gamibang (HGF) and HG, and the filtered supernatant was freeze-dried and used in the experiment. By measuring DPPH and ABTS scavenging activity, it was confirmed that the antioxidant activity was increased. RAW264.7 cells were inoculated with HG and HGF to confirm anti-inflammatory activity through NO assay, and production levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α) were measured through ELISA assay. It was confirmed that HGF had a greater decrease in production than HG. Through lactobacilli fermentation, the beneficial probiotic properties and antioxidant and pro-inflammatory activities of lactic acid bacteria suggest potential clinical or technical applications.

Several plant and microbial genes that could confer disease resistance in transgenic rice plants are being cloned and characterized. We are currently constructing transgenic rice lines that overexpress the gene products, such as a galactinol synthase, a defensin, and a bacterial ACC deaminase. Subtractive hybridization of a rice cDNA library constructed from the Xanthomonas oryzae-infected ice leaves resulted in isolation of many inducible cDNA clones including a elongation factor EF2, a oryzain alpha, a catalase, a aldehyde dehydrogenase, a S-adenosylmethionine synthetase, a caffeic acid O-methyltransferase, a glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, a light-regulated protein, nKY transcription factors, and a nucleotide diphosphate kinase. Some genes among those may be useful genetic sources for construction of disease resistant transgenic rice. Full lengths of the rice OsFIERG and a rice oryzain genomic clones were cloned, and serial deletion fragments of the promoter regions of these genes were fused with GUS reporter gene in pCAMBIA1201, respectively. Promoter activities of these constructs will be examined upon various stresses and Pathogen infections to obtain the pathogen specific inducible-promoter. Augmented reality (AR), which integrates virtual media into reality, is increasingly utilized across various industrial sectors, thanks to advancements in 3D graphics and mobile device technologies. The IT industry is thus carrying out active R&D activities about AR platforms. Google plays a significant role in the AR landscape, with a focus on ARCore services. An essential aspect of ARCore is the use of anchors, which serve as reference points that help maintain the position and orientation of virtual objects within the physical environment. However, if the accuracy of anchor positioning is suboptimal when running AR content, it can significantly diminish the user's immersive experience. We are to assess the performance of these anchors in this study. To conduct the performance evaluation, virtual 3D objects, matching the shape and size of real-world objects, we strategically positioned ourselves to overlap with their physical counterparts. Images of both real and virtual objects were captured from five distinct camera trajectories, and ARCore's performance was analyzed by examining the difference between these captured images.

Although most lemons are imported into Korea, their consumption is increasing. Development of domestic varieties of Jeramon and Minimon is currently underway in an effort to meet the increasing demand for fresh lemons. In this study, an analysis of the physicochemical characteristics of Jeramon and Minimon, including their flavor components and antioxidant properties, was conducted. The results revealed that these new varieties of Korean lemon can be regarded as good sources of antioxidants and phytochemicals. Compared to Sunkist, the most consumed lemon variety in Korea, Minimon contained more than twice as much β-cryptoxanthin, and the content of L-ascorbic acid was more than three-four-fold higher in both Minimon and Jeramon. In addition, results from measurement of DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities indicated that Jeramon extract exhibited the highest antioxidant activity. In the volatile profile analysis, the profiles of volatile components showed high similarity among the three lemon samples, and the composition ratio was largely dominated by terpenoids. A markedly higher ratio of d-limonene and thymol was detected in the Minimon variety compared with that in the other two varieties. Collectively, the findings from this study on Korean lemon varieties provide a basis as well as valuable guidance for breeding domestic lemon varieties.

Cancer is a global health challenge with high morbidity and mortality rates. However, conventional cancer treatment methods often have severe side effects and limited success rates. In the last decade, extensive research has been conducted to develop safe, and efficient alternative treatments that do not have the limitations of existing anticancer medicines. Plant-derived compounds have shown promise in cancer treatment for their anti-carcinogenic and anti-proliferative properties. Rosmarinic acid (RA) and carnosic acid (CA) are potent polyphenolic compounds found in rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) extract. They have been extensively studied for their biological properties, which include anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer activities. In addition, RA and CA have demonstrated effective anti-proliferative properties against various cancers, making them promising targets for extensive research to develop candidate or leading compounds for cancer treatment. This review discusses and summarizes the anti-tumor effect of RA and CA against various cancers and highlights the involved biochemical and mechanistic pathways.
