  • Background: Dendritic cells (DCs) are the most potent APCs (antigen-presenting cells) and playa critical role in immune responses. Galectin-3 is a biological lectin with a beta-galactoside binding affinity. Recently, proteomic analysis revealed the presence of galectin-3 in the exosome of mature DCs. However, the expression and function of galectin-3 in DCs remains unclear yet. Methods: We used bone marrow-derived DCs of mouse and showed the expression of galectin-3 in DCs by using flow cytometry analysis and Western blot analysis. Results: Galectin-3 was determined as single band of 35 kDa in Western blot analysis. Flow cytometry analysis showed the major growth factor for DCs, granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and maturing agents, anti-CD40 monoclonal antibody (mAb) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) consistently increased the intracellular expression of galectin-3 in DCs compared to medium alone. In addition, DCs treated with maturing agents did marginally express galectin-3 on their surface. Conclusion: This study suggests that galectin-3 in DCs may be regulated by critical factors for DC function.

  • A genetic analysis of the complex Bacillus subtilis transcriptional apparatus is essential to understand the function, regulation, and interaction of the transcriptase components during growth and sporulation. This approach in Escherichia coli has uncovered fundamental mechanisms regulating gene expression Cole and Nomura, 1986; Lindahl and Zengel, 1986) and an analysis of the B. subtilis transcriptase will allow comoparison of the E.coli system to another bacterium that has evolved under different selective pressures. To this end we used antibody probes to isolate the alpha, beta, and beta' core subunit genes from a .lambda.gtill expression vector library. To address the question of function ans regulation of the minor sigma factors that confer promoter specifity on the polymerase core (Losick et al., 1986), we used the same approach to isolate the gene for the 37,000 dalton sigma factor, sigma-37.

  • In the present work, the effect of PDF selection and intermittency on the result of the numerical simulation are examined by the simulation of a turbulent methane-air jet diffusion flame. As to the PDFs, beta-function and clipped Gaussian are considered. Results for the pure mixing jet are compared with experimental results. Then, the turbulent flame is calculated for the same conditions and the results obtained for the several models are compared. It is found that the clipped Gaussian distribution coupled with consideration of intermittency recovers the experimental data very well. As to the reacting flow results, the main overall properties of the turbulent jet diffusion flame such as maximum flame temperature are less affected by the choice of the PDF. Flame height and NO emissions, on the contrary, appear to be significantly influenced.

  • We say a positive integer n satisfies the Lehmer property if ${\phi}(n)$ divides n - 1, where ${\phi}(n)$ is the Euler's totient function. Clearly, every prime satisfies the Lehmer property. No composite integer satisfying the Lehmer property is known. In this article, we show that every composite integer of the form $D_{p,n}=np^n+1$, for a prime p and a positive integer n, or of the form ${\alpha}2^{\beta}+1$ for ${\alpha}{\leq}{\beta}$ does not satisfy the Lehmer property.

  • We present an upper bound on the Cheeger constant of a distance-regular graph. Recently, the authors found an upper bound on the Cheeger constant of distance-regular graph under a certain restriction in their previous work. Our new bound in the current paper is much better than the previous bound, and it is a general bound with no restriction. We point out that our bound is explicitly computable by using the valencies and the intersection matrix of a distance-regular graph. As a major tool, we use the discrete Green's function, which is defined as the inverse of ${\beta}$-Laplacian for some positive real number ${\beta}$. We present some examples of distance-regular graphs, where we compute our upper bound on their Cheeger constants.

  • This paper describes transient responses of a very floating structure subjected to dynamic load induced by waves. A time domain method is applied to the hydroelastic problems for this purpose. The method is based on source-dipole and FEM scheme and on Newmark $\beta$ method to pursuit time step process taking advantage of memory effect. The present procedure is carried out to analyze hydroelastic responses in regular waves and impact responses due to dropping aircraft.

  • Pd films($180{\sim}670{\AA}$ thick) were made by thermal evaporation. Electrical resistance of the films was measured during hydrogen absorption-desorption process at room temperature. Resistance changes as a function of hydrogen pressure in thin films of the PdH system show a strong dependence on film thickness. $({\Delta}R_{\infty}/R_0)_{{\beta}min}$ for a $\670{\AA}$ film is 0.61. For a $\180{\AA}$ film, this is 0.34. Resistance change also depends on sample preparation condition.

  • This paper present a study on the application of sound pressure and vibration signals to detect the presence of defects in a rolling element bearing using a statistical analysis method. The well established statistical parameters such as the crest factor and the distribution of moments including kurtosis and skewless are utilized in this study. In addition, other statistical parameters derived from the beta distribution function are also used. A comparison study on the performance of the different types of parameter used is also performed. The statistical analysis is used because of its simplicity and quick computation. Under ideal conditions, the statistical method can be used to identify the different types of defect present in the bearing. In addition, the results also reveal that there is no significant advantages in using the beta function parameters when compared to using kurtosis and the crest factor for detecting and identifying defects in rolling element bearings from both sound and vibration signals.

  • The significant structure theory of liquids has been successfully applied to liquid gallium. In this work, we have assumed that two structures exist simultaneously in liquid gallium. One is considered as loosely close packed $\beta$-Ga-like structure and the other is the remainder of solid $\alpha$-Ga or $\alpha$-Ga-like structure. This two structural model is introduced to construct the liquid partition function. Using the partition function, the thermodynamic and transport properties are calculated over a wide temperature range. The calculated results are quite satisfactory when compared with the experimental results.
