Determining storage locations of containers is an important issue for efficient operation of container terminals. This study assumes a storage yard with a horizontal layout in which blocks are laid out in parallel to the quay and trucks enter at the side of a block to deliver (receive) a container to (from) the yard crane. Various storage rules for determining storage locations of containers are introduced. Simulation studies are conducted for evaluating various rules. The following guidelines are derived from the result of our simulation study: when designing a block, consider a block configuration in which the longest gantry and the longest trolley travel times of rail-mounted gantry cranes (RMGCs) are similar; do not restrict the types of containers that can be stored in a storage area; if different roles are to be assigned to different storage areas, one possible way is to divide a bay into two areas so that some rows in the bay are allocated to inbound containers while the other rows in the same bay are allocated to outbound containers; reserve the space in bay unit for a high productivity of RMGCs but reserve the space in stack unit when the storage space is not enough; when the storage space is not sufficient, allocate storage location in a way of starting from the end and ending at the middle of a block; for reducing the travel distance of internal trucks, provide a higher priority to a block nearer to the berthing position of the corresponding vessel.
Recently, a new port reserves deep water depth for safe navigation and mooring, following the trend of larger ship building. Larger port facilities include long and huge breakwaters, and mainly adopt vertical type considering low construction cost. A vertical breakwater creates stem waves combining inclined incident waves and reflected waves, and this causes maneuvering difficulty to the passing vessels, and erosion of shoreline with additional damages to berthing facilities. Thus, in this study, the researchers have investigated the response of stem waves at the vertical breakwater near the entrance channel and applied numerical models, which are commonly used for the analysis of wave response at the harbor design. The basic equation composing models here adopted both the linear parabolic approximation adding the nonlinear dispersion relationship and nonlinear parabolic approximation adding a linear dispersion relationship. To analyze the applicability of both models, the research compared the numerical results with the existing hydraulic model results. The gap of serial breakwaters and aligned angles caused more complicated stem wave generation and secondary stem wave was found through the breakwater gap. Those analyzed results should be applied to ship handling simulation studies at the approaching channels, along with the mooring test.

Currently, ship control, tug, and pilot work in import/export ports including Gwangyang Port are operated according to factors such as the order of arrival and departure regardless of the shipping company. Also, even this is done very inefficiently by hand. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a system to increase the efficiency of port and ship operation through standardization and digitalization of tasks related to Berthing and unberthing of ships. In this study, we propose a method to increase the efficiency of port and vessel operation by designing a smart port operation system based on big data such as vessel location information, pilotage and tug schedule, arrival/departure operation information, and weather information.

To ensure safe port operations around the world, it is important to solve mooring problems. In particular, the many ports that face open seas have difficulties with long-period waves. As a countermeasure, the installation of a breakwater is proposed for mooring safety. However, this often cannot be put into practice because of financial issues. Instead, port terminals control berthing schedules with weather forecasting. However, mooring problems remain unsolved, because of inaccurate wave forecasting. To quantify the current situation, numerical simulations are presented with ship motions, fender deflections, and rope tensions. In addition, novel simulations for mooring ropes are proposed considering tension, friction, bending fatigue, and temperature. With this novel simulation, the optimal mooring method in terms of safety and economic efficiency was confirmed. In terms of safety, the optimal mooring method is verified to minimize dangerous mooring situations. Moreover, the optimal mooring method shows economic benefits and efficiency. It can help to reinforce the safety of port terminals and improve the efficiency of port operations.

We examine berth allocation problems in tidal bulk ports with an objective of minimizing the demurrage and dispatch associated berthing cost. In the proposed optimization model inventory (or stock) level constraints are considered so as to satisfy the service level requirements in bulk terminals. It is shown that the mathematical programming formulation of this research provides improved schedule resolution and solution accuracy. We also show that the conventional big-M method of standard resource allocation models can be exempted in tidal bulk ports, and thus the computational efficiency can be significantly improved.
As the suitability of berth allocation will ultimately have a significant influence on the performance of a berth, a great deal of attention should be given to berth allocation. Generally, a berth allocation problem has conflicting factors between servers and users. In addition, there is uncertainty in great extent caused by various factors such as departure delay, inclement weather on route, poor handling equipment, a lack of storage space, and other factors contribute to the uncertainty of arrival and berthing time. Thus, it is necessary to establish berth allocation planning which reflects the positions of interested parties and the ambiguity of parameters. For this, a berth allocation problem is formulated by fuzzy 0-1 integer programming introducing the concept of maximum Position Shift(MPS). But, the above approach has limitations in terms of computational time and computer memory when the size of problem is increased. It also has limitations with respect to the integration of other sub-systems such as ship planning system and yard planning system. For solving such problem, this paper focuses particularly on developing an efficient heuristic algorithm as a new technique of getting an effective solution. And also the suggested algorithm is verified through the illustrative examples and empirical appalicaton to BCTOC.

Recently, as a number of accidents occur while berthing ships, the need for safety measures for ship operation in ports is emphasized. In order to quantitatively analyze the contents of safety measures in Busan New Port, this study collected ship trajectory data,, and based on this data, applied a maritime artificial intelligence algorithm to analyze the trajectory pattern. As a result, the waypoint of the ship arriving and departing Busan New Port was derived and the operation pattern of the ship's speed and course was proposed.

Now days, various types of ships are operated to transport both cargo and passengers all around the world. Most of the important auxiliary machinery installed in those ships is fluid machinery such as pumps, compressors, and fans. A large percentage of fluid machinery is pumps which are classified as turbo and positive displacement pumps. This paper analyzes only turbo pumps out of the two types. This thesis has two aims: (a) to analyze the present status of pumps installed in merchant and training ships and (b) to find the correlation among sea going pump kW, port pump kW, GE kW, ME MCR, number of pumps, ME kgf, pump kgf. Based on the ship's type, my paper seeks to find special characteristics as a result of analyzing head, flow rate, and kW. Moreover this paper analyzes and compares number of pumps, rpm of pumps, pump kW/ME MCR and pump kW/GE kW under the conditions of seagoing and berthing according to the ship's type. In conclusion, (1) For the exact comparison, information on the head, kW, flow rate, number of pumps by ship's type, the pump installation status of the Merchant Ships and Training Ships were tabulated and compared in this paper. (2) In order to qualify one ship as the delegate ship, several methods were used. The result of the examination indicates that the chosen ships could be justified as a suitable representation of ships of their own type. (3) The correlation of several values(total pump kW, port pump kW, GE kW, seagoing pump kW, pump weight, ME weight, ME MCR, number of pumps and ME kW) could be obtained.

This paper describes a automatic video surveillance system(AVSS) with long range and 360$^{\circ}$ coverage that is automatically rotated in an elevation over azimuth mode in response to the TTM(tracked target message) signal of vessels tracked by ARPA(automatic radar plotting aids) radar. This AVSS that is a video security and tracking system supported by ARPA radar, CCTV(closed-circuit television) camera system and other sensors to automatically identify and track, detect the potential dangerous situations such as collision accidents at sea and berthing/deberthing accidents in harbor, can be used in monitoring the illegal fishing vessels in inshore and offshore fishing ground, and in more improving the security and safety of domestic fishing vessels in EEZ(exclusive economic zone) area. The movement of the target vessel chosen by the ARPA radar operator in the AVSS can be automatically tracked by a CCTV camera system interfaced to the ECDIS(electronic chart display and information system) with the special functions such as graphic presentation of CCTV image, camera position, camera azimuth and angle of view on the ENC, automatic and manual controls of pan and tilt angles for CCTV system, and the capability that can replay and record continuously all information of a selected target. The test results showed that the AVSS developed experimentally in this study can be used as an extra navigation aid for the operator on the bridge under the confusing traffic situations, to improve the detection efficiency of small targets in sea clutter, to enhance greatly an operator s ability to identify visually vessels tracked by ARPA radar and to provide a recorded history for reference or evidentiary purposes in EEZ area.
The berth and crane scheduling problem in a container terminal encompasses the whole process of assigning berth to each ship, determining the duration of berthing, assigning container cranes to each ship, and determining the specific start and end time of each crane service, for all the ships scheduled to be arriving at the terminal during a certain scheduling horizon. This problem is basically a constraint satisfaction problem in which cranes and berths should be assigned in such a way that all the spatial and temporal constraints are satisfied without any interference. However, it is also an optimization problem because the requested arrival and departure time should be met for as many of the scheduled ships as possible, while the operation cost of the terminal should be minimized. In this paper, we present an effective and efficient approach to solving this type of problem, which combines constrain satisfaction search and heuristic repair. We first employ a constraint satisfaction search to find a feasib1e solution. Then, the feasible solution is modified to a more optimal one by iteratively applying our heuristic repair operations within the framework of constraint satisfaction search. Experimental results with a real data from Pusan East Container Terminal showed that our approach can derive a schedule of satisfactory quality in a very short time.
