  • A thermal vapor deposition method for crystallization of insoluble analysis with matrix is established as a new sample preparation method for matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS). A mixture of mono, bis and tris(p-ethyl benzylidene) sorbitols was incorporated into microcrystals of ferulic acid, which was confirmed by confocal micrographs. Molecular masses of sorbitol derivatives were determined in this way by MALDI-MS without thermal decomposition.

  • 4-Thiazolidinones which are hetarylsubstituted at the 2-position were prepared by the reaction of mercapto acids with aldimines which were prepared by the condensation of pyrrole-2-carbaldehyde with different aromatic amines. After their benzylide ne derivatives were obtained, we first applied the Wittig reagent on them in the presence of triethylamine, dihydrofurothiazolidines were synthesized. Second, we prepared new pyrazolinothiazolidines by using phenylhydrazine in the presence of sodium acetate. All mentioned compounds have been characterized by their spectral data, and screened for their antimicrobial activities. Some of them exhibit moderate to good antibacterial and tuberculostatic activities.

  • Mononuclear Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II), Zn(II), Fe(III), Ru(III), and UO2(II) complexes of 2-hydroxy-4-(p-tolyldiazenyl)benzylidene)-2-(p-tolylamino)acetohydrazide (H2L) were prepared by direct method. The ligand and its complexes were isolated in solid state and characterized by analytical techniques such as elemental and thermal analyses, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility measurements and spectroscopic techniques such as UV-Visible, IR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR. The spectral data indicated that the ligand acted as neutral/monobasic bidentate or monobasic/dibasic tridentate ligand bonded to the metal ions through the oxygen atom of ketonic or enolic carbonyl group, azomethine nitrogen atom and deprotonated/protonated phenolic oxygen atom forming either tetragonally distorted octahedral or octahedral. Antimicrobial activities of the ligand and its complexes were evaluated against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Aspergillus niger by well diffusion method. The results of antifungal activity showed that the Fe(III) complex (10) exhibited higher antifungal against Aspergillus niger than the other complexes. However, the results of antibacterial activity revealed that Cu(II) complex (4) is the most active against Escherichia coli while the Cu(II) complex (5) and Fe(III) complex (10) exhibited higher antibacterial effect on Bacillus subtilis than the other complexes.

  • A new one series of chiral schiff's base containing benzylidene aniline moieties was synthesized and characterized by IR, $^1H$ NMR. elementary analysis, and polarized optical microscopy(POM). The yield of these synthetic compounds was in the range of $62{\sim}67^{\circ}C$. The results showed that most of the synthetic compounds were monotropic liquid crystal and exhibited chiral smectic C($Sc^{\ast}$) liquid crystal phases, and the range of phase transition temperature was to $71.4^{\circ}C$ from $45.0^{\circ}C$.

  • The title compound (BMBZA) was designed and synthesized as a novel fluorescent amorphous molecular material. BMBZA was found to exhibit solvatofluorochromism and to readily form an amorphous glass by cooling the melt on standing. In addition, the morphological change from crystalline state to amorphous one could be induced by mechanical grinding. Although fluorescence was scarcely observed for the crystalline sample of BMBZA, the grinding the sample was found to enhance the fluorescence emission, that is, BMBZA exhibited on-off type mechanofluorochromism.

  • Some novel heterocyclic derivatives of 1,1-bis(2-phenyl-5-arylidine-1,3-thiadiazolidin-4-one)cyclopropane 4(a-i) have been synthesized from cyclopropane dicarboxylic acid and substituted thiadiazole moieties. All the synthesized compounds have been characterized by elemental and spectral (I.R., $^1H$-NMR, Mass) analysis. Furthermore, above said compounds were screened for their antifungal and antibacterial activities. Compound 4c was found the most potent one which further evaluated for lesser toxicity test.

  • The design, synthesis, and structural characterization of two new palladium complexes based on Schiff base ligands is reported; $[Pd(L1)_2]$ (1) and $[Pd(L2)_2]$ (2), [HL1 = 2-((E)-(2,6-diethylphenylimino)methyl)-4,6-dibromophenol, L2 = (E)-N-benzylidene-2,6-diethylbenzenamine], which are obtained by functionalizing Schiff base ligands with or without electron-withdrawing groups. Both compounds are mononuclear structures. Comparisons are made to the compounds 1 and 2 to analyze and understand the effect of electron-withdrawing groups. Antibacterial activity studies indicate the electron-withdrawing groups on Schiff base ligands enhance antibacterial activity. Catalytic activity, however, is reduced due to the enhanced steric-hindrance of the electron-withdrawing groups. Electronic absorption and emission properties of HL1, L2, 1 and 2 are also reported.

  • 3-Amino-2-phenylthietane derivatives were considered as a useful tool to elusidate the mechanism of inhibiton of MAO by tranylcypromine-type inhitors. The synthesis of 3-benzoylamino-2-phenylthieetane, 3-amino-2-phenylthietane, and 3-N, N-dimentylamino-2-p-nitrophenythietane was attempted using the reaction between 1, 3 dihalogeno alkanes with alkali sulfide. When 1-pheny1-1, 3-dihalo-2-benzolaminopropane was treated with sodium sulfide, 2-pheny 1-4 benzylidene-2-oxazoline was isolated, indicating the case of elimination reaction compared to ring formation. The reaction of 1-p-nitropheny1-1, 3-dichloro-2-N, N-dimethylaminopropane with sodium sulfide gave bis (1-p-nitropheny1-2-N, N-dimethylamino-3-chloropropane)sulfide. The mechanism of reaction was discussed.
