  • The H.B. Robinson Unit 2 (HBR-2) pressure vessel dosimetry benchmark is an in- and ex-Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) neutron dosimetry benchmark based on experimental data from the HBR-2 reactor, a 2300-MW PWR designed by Westinghouse and put in operation in March 1971, openly available through the SINBAD Database at OECD/NEA data Bank. The goals of the present work were to carry out three-dimensional (3D) fixed source transport calculations in both Cartesian (X,Y,Z) and cylindrical (R,θ,Z) geometries by using the TORT-3.2 discrete ordinates code on very detailed 3D HBR-2 geometrical models and to test the latest broad-group coupled (47 neutron groups + 20 photon groups) working cross section libraries in FIDO-ANISN format with same structure as BUGLE-96, such as BUGJEFF311.BOLIB, BUGENDF70.BOLIB and BUGLE-B7. The results obtained with all the cited libraries were satisfactory and are here reported and compared.

  • In this paper, benchmark tests of Rapid Prototyping(RP) are presented to evaluate characteristics of various RP Systems and Processes, and several decision-support systems are developed to select RP Machine/Process suitable to user's requirements. Results of the RP benchmark tests are applied to the recently developed RP machines for the purpose of analyzing attributes such as dimensional accuracy, surface roughness, build cost, build time, and etc. Decision-making support systems are also developed, which contain not only new LCE (Linear Confidence Equation) algorithm but also modified PRES and MDS algorithm. Those algorithms are proved to be effective in that reasonably acceptable results are obtained on several cases of different inputs.

  • Developers of new finite elements or nonlinear solution techniques rely on discriminative benchmark tests drawn from the literature to assess the advantages and drawbacks of new formulations. Buckling benchmark tests provide a rigorous evaluation of finite elements applied to thin structures, and a complete and detailed set of reference results would therefore prove very useful in carrying out such evaluations. Results are usually presented in the form of load-deflection curves that developers must reconstruct by extracting the points, a procedure which is often tedious and inaccurate. Moreover the curves are usually given without accompanying information such as the calculation time or number of iterations it took for the model to converge, even though this type of data is equally important in practice. This paper presents ten different limit-point buckling benchmark tests, and provides for each one the reference load-deflection curve, all the points necessary to recreate the curve in tabulated form, analysis data such as calculation time, number of iterations and increments, and all of the inputs used to obtain these results.

  • This paper presents the validation of the MCS code for critical safety analysis with burnup credit for the spent fuel casks. The validation process in this work considers five critical benchmark problem sets, which consist of total 80 critical experiments having MOX fuels from the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP). The similarity analysis with the use of sensitivity and uncertainty tool TSUNAMI in SCALE was used to determine the applicable benchmark experiments corresponding to each spent fuel cask model and then the Upper Safety Limits (USLs) except for the isotopic validation were evaluated following the guidance from NUREG/CR-6698. The validation process in this work was also performed with the MCNP6 for comparison with the results using MCS calculations. The results of this work showed the consistence between MCS and MCNP6 for the MOX fueled criticality benchmarks, thus proving the reliability of the MCS calculations.

  • The structural health monitoring (SHM) benchmark study on optimal sensor placement problem for the instrumented Canton Tower has been launched. It follows the success of the modal identification and model updating for the Canton Tower in the previous benchmark study, and focuses on the optimal placement of vibration sensors (accelerometers) in the interest of bettering the SHM system. In this paper, the sensor placement problem for the Canton Tower and the benchmark model for this study are first detailed. Then an information entropy based sensor placement method with the purpose of damage detection is proposed and applied to the benchmark problem. The procedure that will be implemented for structural damage detection using the data obtained from the optimal sensor placement strategy is introduced and the information on structural damage is specified. The information entropy based method is applied to measure the uncertainties throughout the damage detection process with the use of the obtained data. Accordingly, a multi-objective optimal problem in terms of sensor placement is formulated. The optimal solution is determined as the one that provides equally most informative data for all objectives, and thus the data obtained is most informative for structural damage detection. To validate the effectiveness of the optimally determined sensor placement, damage detection is performed on different damage scenarios of the benchmark model using the noise-free and noise-corrupted measured information, respectively. The results show that in comparison with the existing in-service sensor deployment on the structure, the optimally determined one is capable of further enhancing the capability of damage detection.

  • The Canton Tower (formerly named Guangzhou New TV Tower) of 610 m high has been instrumented with a long-term structural health monitoring (SHM) system consisting of over 700 sensors of sixteen types. Under the auspices of the Asian-Pacific Network of Centers for Research in Smart Structures Technology (ANCRiSST), an SHM benchmark problem for high-rise structures has been developed by taking the instrumented Canton Tower as a host structure. This benchmark problem aims to provide an international platform for direct comparison of various SHM-related methodologies and algorithms with the use of real-world monitoring data from a large-scale structure, and to narrow the gap that currently exists between the research and the practice of SHM. This paper first briefs the SHM system deployed on the Canton Tower, and the development of an elaborate three-dimensional (3D) full-scale finite element model (FEM) and the validation of the model using the measured modal data of the structure. In succession comes the formulation of an equivalent reduced-order FEM which is developed specifically for the benchmark study. The reduced-order FEM, which comprises 37 beam elements and a total of 185 degrees-of-freedom (DOFs), has been elaborately tuned to coincide well with the full-scale FEM in terms of both modal frequencies and mode shapes. The field measurement data (including those obtained from 20 accelerometers, one anemometer and one temperature sensor) from the Canton Tower, which are available for the benchmark study, are subsequently presented together with a description of the sensor deployment locations and the sensor specifications.

  • As new database systems are developed or new functions are added to existing database systems, database developers or users would like to evaluate new database systems or new functions. This paper presents an integrated database benchmark suite. The integrated suite offers genetic benchmarks, custom benchmark, and hybrid benchmarks to users on a unified Web user interface. With regard to text data generation, the integrated suite supports eight data distributions with three data types. The integrated suite can also generate XML data in three different ways. Users can run benchmarks in realistic environments by performing the workload generation facility of the integrated suite, which generates composite workloads similar to real-world workloads. Using supporting tools, users can easily implement new generic and custom benchmarks in the integrated suite. An illustrative demonstration to add a new custom benchmark into the integrated suite is presented.
