  • The strategies used by 274 $4^{th}$ and $6^{th}$ graders for coping with stress were assessed by the Daily Hassles Coping Scale(Min & Yoo, 1998), and their behavior problems were assayed by their mothers with the Korean version of Achenbach's Child Behavior Check List(Oh, Lee, Hong, & Ha, 1997). Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, 2-way ANOVA, and hierarchical regressions. Findings were that girls used more passive/avoidant coping strategies than boys; $6^{th}$ graders used more passive/avoidant coping strategies than $4^{th}$ graders; $6^{th}$ grade boys had more internalized behavior problems than $4^{th}$ grade boys; $4^{th}$ grade girls had more internalized behavior problems than $6^{th}$ grade girls; passive/avoidant strategies were positively related to internalized behavior; aggressive strategies were positively related to externalized behavior; strategies of seeking social support were negatively related to both internalized and externalized behavior problems.

  • This study investigated preschoolers' happiness, behavior problems, and interpersonal problem solving strategies according to their sex and age, and the relationships among them. The subjects were 185 preschoolers (97 boys and 88 girls; 83 four-year-olds and 102 five-year-olds). Results showed that boys were higher in behavior problems (aggression) and forceful problem solving strategies than girls, while girls were higher in happiness (characteristics of self) than boys. Also, 4-year-old children were higher in forceful problem solving strategies than 5-year-olds. Children's happiness was negatively related to their internalizing and externalizing behavior problems. Behavior problems and interpersonal problem solving strategies of children were influenced by their happiness. These findings provide preliminary evidence that children's happiness may predict their behavior problems and interpersonal problem solving strategies.

  • The purpose of this was to investigate the relationship institutionalized childrens ego-identities and internal locus of control to behavior problems. The subjects were 119 5th and 6th graders(58 boys, 61 girls) who were institutionalized in Seoul. The major findings of this study were as follows: 1) The institutionalized childrens internal locus of control and ego-identity were not significant difference in gender, reason for entering the institution and duration in he institution. The institutionalized childrens internal locus of control was significantly related to their ego-identity. The more internal locus of control, the higher ego-identity. 2) The institutionalized childrens behavior problems were not significant difference in gender and duration in the institution, but were significant difference reason for entering the institution. The children who were institutionalized by parents absence were more likely to have behavior problems than children by economic problem or marital conflict. The institutionalized childrens behavior problems were significantly related to their ego-identities and internal locus of control. The less internal locus of control, the more behavior problems, and the less ego-identities, the more behavior problems.

  • Objective: This study examined the relationships among sleep problems, executive function and social behavior during the preschool period. In addition, the mediating role of executive function between sleep problems and social behavior was investigated. Methods: A total of 304 preschool children participated in this study. The data were collected through maternal reports. Results: First, preschoolers' sleep problems were found to be significantly related to overt aggression and prosocial behavior. Second, preschoolers with sleep problems displayed lower levels of executive function. Third, preschoolers' executive function was significantly associated with social behavior. Lastly, preschoolers' executive function fully mediated the relationship between sleep problems and overt aggression, and between sleep problems and prosocial behavior. That is, preschoolers' sleep problems had effects on overt aggression and prosocial behavior, only through the effects on executive function. Conclusion: This study contributes to the sleep literature by examining the role of executive function and emphasizes the importance of forming a healthy sleep habit during the preschool period.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the discriminant validity and the clinical cut off scores of the Child Behavior Checklist 1.5-5 (CBCL 1.5-5) in the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and non-ASD. Methods: In total, 104 ASD and 441 non-ASD infants were included in the study. T-test, discriminant analysis, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, and odds ratio analysis were performed on the data. Results: The discriminant validity was confirmed by mean differences and discriminant analysis on the subscales of Emotionally reactive, Somatic complaints, Withdrawn, Sleep problems, Attention problems, Aggressive behavior, Internalizing problems, Externalizing problems, and Total problems, along with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)-oriented scales between the two groups. ROC analysis showed that the following subscales significantly separated ASD from normal infants: Emotionally reactive, Somatic complaints, Withdrawn, Sleep problems, Attention problems, Aggressive behavior, Internalizing problems, Externalizing problems, Total problems, and DSM pervasive developmental problems. Moreover, the clinical cut off score criteria adopted in the Korean-CBCL 1.5-5 were shown to be valid for the subscales Withdrawn, Internalizing problems, Externalizing problems, Total problems, and DSM pervasive developmental problems. Conclusion: The subscales of Withdrawn, Internalizing problems, Externalizing problems, Total problems, and DSM pervasive developmental problems significantly discriminated infants with ASD.

  • This study was to investigate the relationship between parent attachment, peer support and behavior problems of middle school students. The subjects were 591 male and female students in the first and third grade of the middle school and their mothers in Busan. The instruments used for this study were Inventory of Parent Attachment Scale, Peer Support Scale and Behavior Checklist for Adolescents. The results were as follows: 1. The first grade students had stronger attachment on father and mother than third grade. The third grade students had perceived peer support more than first grade. Female students had stronger attachment on mother and perceived peer support more than male students. And there was no significant sex difference in attachment on father. In the case of female students, internalizing and externalizing behavior problems increased grade. But, in the case of male students, there was no grade difference in internalizing and externalizing behavior problems. In the case of first grade students, there was no sex difference in internalizing behavior problems. In the case of first grade students, males had more externalizing behavior problems than females. But in the case of third grade students, females had more externalizing behavior problems than males. 2. As parent's education level was higher, students had stronger attachment on parents and perceived more peer support. As family income was higher, students had stronger attachment on father and perceived more peer support. 3. In case of female students, parent attachment and peer support were correlated negatively with internalizing and externalizing behavior problems. In case of male students, attachment on fathers and peer.

  • The purposes of this study were twofold. Firstly, we sought to examine the effects of the severity of behavior problems of children with autism spectrum disorders and maternal stress coping styles on maternal parenting stress. Secondly, we investigated whether maternal stress coping styles moderate the relationship between the severity of children's behavior problems on parenting stress. The participants of this study comprised 106 mothers of children with ASD who were aged 6 to 18. In order to measure the research variables, the Parenting Stress Scale(Hwang, 2002), the Korean version of Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 6-18(Oh, Kim, Ha, Lee, & Hong, 2010), the Ways of Coping Checklist(Kim, 1987) were used. The data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics and hierarchical multiple regression analyses. The results indicated that both the severity of externalizing behavior problems and the emotion-focused stress coping styles had significant and positive effects on parenting stress. Second, the stress coping styles had no moderating effect on the relationship between the severity of behavior problems(externalizing behavior problems, internalizing behavior problems) and maternal parenting stress.

  • Purpose: The purposes of this descriptive survey study were to determine the relationships between the perception on the temperament and behavior problems of their children and mothers' characteristics with preschoolers. Method: Data were collected from 125 mothers of preschoolers in Kunpo city. The instruments used for this study were Korean CBCL, childrearing burden, mother's health questionnaire, and social support. Results: There were significant differences in the behavior problems according to preschooler's temperament. Difficult children were more hyperactive, withdrawn, aggressive, and premature in behavior. Preschoolers' behavior problems showed significant relationships with mothers' health problem, childrearing burden, and social support. Conclusion: Preschoolers' behavior problems are affected by their temperament, and related with mothers' characteristics. It is important to identify parents' perception on their children's temperament and behavior problems, and the parental role education programs are necessary.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships of mother's childrearing behavior, children's behavior problems, locus of control and peer victimization. The subjects were 360 children of 4th and 6th grade and their mothers. The instruments were Peer Victimization Scale, CBCL, Locus of Control Scale for Children, Childrearing Behavior Scale. The major findings of this study were as follows; (1) The type of peer victimization had a significant difference between girls and boys. That is, boys were more focused on overt victimization than girls. There was no significant gender difference in relational victimization, And there was no significant grade difference in overt and relational victimization. (2) Mother's rejection-restriction childrearing behavior, children's social withdrawal behavior problems, extemal locus of control predicted children's peer victimization. 24% of the variance of children's peer victimization was explained by these variables. (3) Mother's rejection-restriction childrearing behavior was the first contribution factor and had a direct and indirect effect through children's locus of control on children's peer victimization. And children's social withdrawal behavior problems was second contribution factor and had a direct effect on children's peer victimization. Children's locus of control had a direct and indirect effect through children's social withdrawal behavior problems on children's peer victimization. Mother's warmth-acceptance and permissiveness-nonintervention childrearing behavior had indirect effect through children's locus of control on children's peer victimization.

  • Objective: This study aimed to examine the longitudinal relations of children's temperamental attributes (i.e., emotionality, activity, and sociability) and maternal responsiveness to overall and specific externalizing/internalizing behavior problems during the preschool period. Methods: Data (N=1,438) from the 4th and 6th wave of Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC) were used in a series of hierarchical regression analyses. The analyses were conducted to determine the additive and interactive effects of maternal responsiveness and temperamental attributes of children at the age of 3 years on the broadband and narrowband scales of their behavior problems at the age of 5 years. Results: Overall, results confirmed the additive and interactive effects of maternal responsiveness and temperamental attributes on the levels of different domains of behavior problems. Examination of the interactive effects showed that maternal responsiveness was more strongly related to some behavior problems for temperamentally vulnerable children as compared to children with less temperamental vulnerabilities. Conclusion: The findings suggested that the beneficial effects of positive parenting on the development of behavior problems might be more pronounced for temperamentally vulnerable than for less vulnerable children.
