A study has been made on defects which are formed in manufacturing processes of engine bearing and also on fatigue crack growth behavior in each step of bearing metal manufacturing. After the first step (sinter brass powder on steel plate ; Series A) many voids are made on brass surface and its size is decreased at the second step (rolling process of sintered plate ; Series B). After the third step (re-sintering step of brass powder and rolling ; Series C) the number of voids is decreased and its type shows line. The time of fatigue crack initiation and the growth rate of fatigue crack are in order of Series A, Series B, Series C. These reasons are that void fosters the crack initiation and growth, and residual stress made by rolling process affects on the crack growth rate in Series B, C. In forming and machining processes by use of final bearing metal, crack was observed at internal corner of flange and peeling off was observed at interface between steel and brass. Owing to the above crack and peeling off, it is considered that there is a possibility of fatigue fracture during the application time.

Fracture patterns observed in the phyllosilicate-bearing layers of the Mawrth Vallis region are analyzed using High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment image data in order to understand the causes of polygonal fracturing. HiRISE data show that the different mineralogies have distinct surface textures and morphologies. The majority of the nontronite-bearing rocks typically appear to have been heavily eroded and are fractured into irregular shaped blocks with variable size, whereas most of the montmorillonite-bearing rocks have polygons which are relatively consistent in size and shape. The majority of the fracture patterns observed in the nontronite-bearing outcrops are interpreted to be a result of unloading stresses. While the polygonal fractures developed in the montmorillonite-bearing layers appear to be a product of desiccation.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the axial bearing capacity and residual properties of steel reinforced recycled aggregate concrete (SRC) column after elevated temperature. A total of 48 SRC columns were designed for the static loading test after elevated temperature. The variables include replacement ratios, designed temperature, target duration, thicknesses of cover concrete, steel ratios and stirrup spacing. From this test, the mass loss ratio and stress load-deformation curve were obtained, and the influence of various parameters on residual bearing capacity were analyzed. ABAQUS was used to calculate the temperature field of specimens, and then got temperature damage distribution on the cross-section concrete. It was shown that increasing of the elevated temperatures leaded to the change of concrete color from smoky-gray to grayish brown and results in reducing the bearing capacity of SRC columns. The axial damage and mechanism of SRC columns were similar to those of reinforced natural aggregate concrete columns at the same temperatures. Finally, the calculation method of axial compressive residual bearing capacity of SRC columns recycled concrete columns after high temperature was reported based on the test results and finite element analysis.
In this study, the expansion, stress, and operating clearance of bearing elements during operation are observed using the inner/outer ring temperature test data of a 3.0×106 DN-class roller bearing. The operating clearance characteristics of inner-/outer-ring cooling (IORC) bearings are compared to those of inner-ring cooling (IRC) bearings. For IRC bearings, the thermal expansion of the outer ring is the most important factor in clearance variation. As a result, the operating clearance is less than the initial clearance of 61 ㎛, and the operating clearance decreases to 0.5 ㎛ at 25,500 rpm. Conversely, the temperature of the outer ring of IORC bearings is lower than that of IRC bearings, so the operating clearance is kept smaller. When the coolant flow rate to the outer ring is approximately 1.5 to 2.0 L/min, the temperature difference between the inner and outer rings is minimized and the operating clearance is maintained at a significantly lower level than IRC bearings. Small operating clearances are expected to be effective in reducing cage slip and skid damage in roller bearings. The results and analysis procedures of this study can be utilized to design of bearing clearance, lubricant flow rate, and assembled interference in the early design stage of aerospace roller bearings.
In order to investigate the effect of the pile shape on the bearing capacity of non-displacement piles, a series of model pile load tests were performed using a calibration chamber and three model piles with different shape. Results of the model tests showed that the bearing capacity of tapered piles was affected by its taper angle as well as the stress states and relative density of soil. Based on the results of model pile load tests, a new design equation for estimation of the bearing capacity of non-displacement piles was proposed, and it takes into account the effect of the taper angles on the bearing capacity of non-displacement piles.
The purpose of this paper is to propose a simple analysis method of axial deformation of base-isolation rubber bearings in a building subjected to earthquake loading and present its applicability to the analysis of the bound of the aspect ratio of base-isolated buildings. The base shear coefficient is introduced as a key parameter for the bound analysis. The bound of the aspect ratio of base-isolated buildings is analyzed based on the relationship of the following four quantities; (i) ultimate state of the tensile stress of rubber bearings based on a proposed simple recursive analysis for seismic loading, (ii) ultimate state of drift of the base-isolation story for seismic loading, (iii) ultimate state of the axial compressive stress of rubber bearings under dead loads, (iv) prediction of the overturning moment at the base for seismic loading. In particular, a new recursive analysis method of axial deformation of rubber bearings is presented taking into account the nonlinear tensile behavior of rubber bearings and it is shown that the relaxation of the constraint on the ultimate state of the tensile stress of rubber bearings increases the limiting aspect ratio.
This thesis is an experimental and numerical research on bearing capacity acting retaining walls close to rigid slopes with stiff angles. Experiments were performed with changing the roughness of adjacent slope to the wall, its inclination, distance between wall and slope. Vertical stress and applied surcharge loads were measured by miniature earth cells and a load cel respectively. Stress distribution Vertical Settlement of surcharge load of rigid model footing were measured by LVDTs. Bearing capacities of surcharge loads were compared with theoretical estimations by using several different methods of limit equilibrium and numerical analysis. For limit equilibrium methods, the modified silo and the wedge theories, proposed by Chung sung gyo and Chung in gyo (1994) were used to analyze test results Based on those modified theories, the particular solution with the boundary condition of surcharge loads on the surface of backfill was obtained to find the stress distributions acting in the backfill and to compare with test results. From results of surcharge test with model wall being very close to the slope, analyzed results by the modified silo theory and to be in the better agreements than other methods.
Examining the mechanical characteristic of the bamboo net structure is necessary in order to evaluate the influence of bending rigidity of bamboo on bearing capacity, however, there is no equipment to examine such mechanical behavior of the bamboo net structure in the world. In this study, a specific equipment to examine stress-strain behavior characteristics of the structure of bamboo net is developed. In comparison with Bamboo's stress-strain behavior characteristic and vertical stress caused by various dozer equipments, the case of estimating minimum embedded depth considering ground settlement is analyzed.
Centrifuge model experiments were performed to investigate the confining effects of the sheet piles, installed to the sides of soft clay ground treated with sand compaction piles, on the bearing capacity and concentration ratio of composite ground. For the given g-level in the centrifuge model tests, replacement ratio of SCP and the width of surcharge loads on the surface of ground with SCP, the confining effects of installing the sheet piles on the edges of SCP ground on the bearing capacity, change of stress concentration ratio and failure mechanism were investigated. Kaolin, one of typical clay mineral, and Jumunjin standard sand were used as a soft clay ground and sand compaction pile irrespectively. As results of experiments, lateral confining effect by inserting the model sheet piles fixed to the loading plate was observed. For the strip surcharge loading condition, the yielding stress intensity in the form of the strip surcharge loads tends to increase with increasing the embedded depth of sheet piles. The stress concentration ratio was found not to be influenced consistently with the embedded depth of sheet piles whereas the effect of stress intensity on stress concentration ratio shows the general trend that values of stress concentration ratio are relatively high at the initial stage of loading and tend to decrease and converge to the certain values. For the failure mechanism in the case of reinforced with sheet piles, displacement behavior related to the punching failure, settlement right beneath the loading plate occurred since the soil was confined with sheet piles, was observed.

Up to now, common studies of top base have concentrated upon bearing capacity and settlement by in-situ loading test in Japan and Korea. But most of all preceding study for top base must analyze how to deliver overburden loading on bottom of foundation. Therefore, in this study, the stress delivery mechanism of Top-Base Foundation developed in Japan and Floating Top Base developed in Korea is investigated through numerical analysis and laboratory model test. Analyzing the load delivery mechanism of top base, it was found that the division rate of load reduction of top base for overburden load was largest in peripheral skin friction between the top base and the crushed stone. Further, total stress dispersion angle of Top-Base Foundation including internal stress dispersion effect of top base was $41.8^{\circ}$ and total stress dispersion angle of Floating Top Base was $44.5^{\circ}$.
