  • This paper describes the surface roughness effect in parallel thrust bearing. In mixed lubrication, some contacts will take place between asperities, and partial lubrication will occur. An average Reynolds Equation is utilized to determine effects of surface roughness on partially lubricated contacts. By using an autocorrelation function for the surface profile, surface model is generated numerically Although the two surfaces are parallel in thrust bearing separated by thin film, the pressure peak is formed due to asperites. By means of surface profile parameters, it is shown that which surface is optimal for the parallel thrust bearing.

  • The purpose of this paper is analyzing the oil film pressure distribution and the minimum oil film thickness for a connecting rod bearing using an A VL′s EXCITE program. It is very important to understand optimized oil supplying holes and oil groove dimensions for supporting sufficiently inertia forces and gas pressures from the combustion chamber for a Diesel engine. The computed results indicate that the optimized oil groove width of a bearing and oil hole of a journal are recommended for high performance of a connecting rod bearing at the elastohydrodynamic lubrication zone. These results as design parameters are very useful data for a bearing designer as a firm reference of an automotive engine.

  • This paper presents the lubrication characteristics of a disk type wavy thrust bearing. The hydrodynamic pressure distributions in the fluid film are numerically solved the Reynolds equation and then the bearing load capacity and friction forces acting on the disk are calculated. Especially the effects of number and amplitude of the circumferential waves are investigated for tilted operating conditions. The results showed that the load capacity increases with wave amplitude and optimum wave number exists for given design conditions. Therefore the results can be applied to enhance the lubrication performance of thrust bearing adopted in the scroll compressor.

  • In this thesis, the dynamic characteristic analysis of carriage structure supported by air bearings were peformed. Toward this end, the characteristics of air bearing were numerically analyzed to estimate the stiffness of the air bearing and the clearance between air bearing and guide surface. The modal analysis of the carriage structure was peformed by using finite element method, and the experimental modal analysis was also performed to validate the finite element model, where rigid body modes were compared to validate the stiffness of the air bearings. From the results, the air spring stiffness can be estimated within the range of acceptable accuracy under any pressure and clearance condition.

  • Water-lubrication ball bearings are required to install in aqueous medium where water is used as coolant or working fluid. However water-lubricated frictional characteristics of stainless steel ball bearing is not will known compared to oil-lubricated frictional characteristics. Furthermore study on friction at high temperature is rare because bearing maintenance strategy for water-lubricated or chemicals-lubricated bearings of equipment is mostly based on change of failed bearings and parts. Ball bearings and ball screws are used to transmit power in the control rod drive mechanism for an integral reactor and are lubricated with high temperature and high pressure chemically-controlled water. Bearings and power transmitting mechanical elements for a nuclear reactor require high reliability and high performance during estimated lifetime, and their performance should be verified. In this paper, experimental research results of frictional characteristics of water-lubricated ball bearing are reported.

  • The study deals with the development of a thermohydrodynamic (THD) computational procedure for evaluating the pressure, temperature and velocity distributions in fluid films with very rough geometry. A parametric investigation is performed to predict the bearing behaviors in the lubricating film having the absorbed layers and their interfaces determined by the rough surfaces with Gaussian distribution. The layers are expressed as functions of the standard deviations of each surface to characterize flow patterns between both the rough sur-faces. The velocity variations and the heat generation are assumed to occur in the central (shear) zone with the same bearing length and width. The coupled effect of surface roughness and shear zone dependency on hydrodynamic pressure and temperature has been found in non-contact mode. The procedure confirms the numerically determined relationship between the pressure and film gap on condition that its roughness magnitude is smaller than the fluid film thickness.

  • A parametric study of the thermal effects of a half-circumferential grooved journal bearings under aligned and misaligned conditions has been carried out by solving numerically the coupled Reynolds and energy equation system. Five different sets of boundary conditions for the energy equation have been used which include mixing between recirculating oil and inlet oil and a contraction ratio for the cavitation region. The effects of changes of the inlet oil temperature and pressure, the wall temperature and the L/D ratio have also been examined. For the range of parameters found in internal combustion engines, the mixing effectiveness at the groove and the resulting final mixture temperature have been found to be as important as the wall temperature and the heat transfer rate. The variability of the temperature, though, has been shown to smooth out the peaks of both pressure and friction during misaligned condition Distributions of friction and pressure in the oil are also examined which may be useful in attempts to reduce friction without reducing load. Results for an axial grooved bearing are also presentsed for comparision purpose.

  • The propeller induced forces acting on a hull are surface forces and bearing forces. The bearing forces are the forces acting directly on the propeller which are transferred to the hull through the propeller bearings. The surface forces are those which act by fluid pressure directly on the various hull surfaces. Because the surface force is main source to oscillate stern constructions and deckhouse, the estimation of surface force is very important to predict response of forced vibration of that. The estimation methods were statistical analysis method, theoretical analysis method and method through model test.

  • The heavy-weight floor impact sound field of the receiving room in a testing building with bearing wall structure was investigated using bang machine and impact ball. The sound field was investigated through the impact sound pressure level distribution by the field measurement and computational analysis. Predicted sound field using the computational analysis agree with measurement result in the low frequency band. Result shows that standard deviations of the single number rating value are about 2dB in each impact source. Particularly, impact sound pressure level at 120cm height in 63Hz octave band was 5dB lower than spatial averaging value. It was found that receiving positions in the ministry of construction and transportation notice should be reconsidered.

  • This paper presents a case study on the tribological failure analysis of a clutch system for a manual transmission car. The clutch systems are composed of clutch disk, clutch pressure plate, flywheel rubbing surface, coil and diaphragm springs, release bearing and lever, clutch spline and shaft. The purpose of a clutch system is to transmit and disconnect the driving power of engines by frictional farce from a rubbing surface of a flywheel to a clutch disk and clutch pressure plate with a minimum power loss. In this study, many tribological failure cases based on the wear phenomena and thermal distortions have been presented, which are collected from the car repair shop and maintenance center. The triboiogicai failures are mostly come from the driving conditions, overloading of a car, and especially driving style and personal habit of a car driver.
