In this paper, the modified direct method employing beam transformation technique is proposed in order to efficiently calculate hydroelastic responses of floating structure. Since the proposed method expresses the displacements of three-dimensional structure with those of transformed beam which leads to small number of equations of motion, the method is numerically efficient compared to the conventional direct method. To verify the efficiency of the proposed method a 500 m-long floating structure under wave loads is considered in numerical example. Displacements, bending moments, torsion moments and shear forces are calculated and computing tine is examined. The results are also compared with those of the conventional direct method.
The main purpose of this paper is to apply differential transformation method(DTM) and generalized differential quadrature method(GDQM) to vibration analysis of Euler-Bernoulli beam with open cracks on elastic foundation. In this paper the concepts of DTM and GDQM were briefly introduced. The governing equation of motion of the beam with open cracks on elastic foundation is derived. The cracks are modeled by massless substitute spring. The effects of the crack location, size and the foundation constants, on the natural frequencies of the beam, are investigated. Numerical calculations are carried out and compared with previous published results.

This paper presents the application of techniques of differential transformation method (DTM) to analyze the transverse vibration of a uniform Euler-Bernoulli beam under varying axial force. The governing differential equation of the transverse vibration of a uniform Euler-Bernoulli beam under varying axial force is derived and verified. The varying axial force was extended to the more general case which was high polynomial consisted of many terms. The concepts of DTM were briefly introduced. Numerical calculations are carried out and compared with previous published results. The accuracy and the convergence in solving the problem by DTM are discussed.
Laser Transformation Hardening(LTH) is one branch of the laser surface modification processes. A lot of energy is needed for the LTH process to elevate workpiece surface to temperature of the austenite transformation($A_3$), which results from utilizing a beam with a larger size and lower power density comparatively. This study is related to the surface hardening for the rod-shaped carbon steel by the high power diode laser whose beam absorptivity is better than conventional types of lasers such as $CO_2$ or Nd:YAG laser. Because a beam proceeds on the rotating specimen, the pretreated hardened-phase can be tempered and softened by the overlapping between hardened tracks. Accordingly, the longitudinal hardness measurement and observation of the micro structure was carried out for an assessment of the hardening characteristics. In addition, a hardening characteristics as a hardenability of materials was compared in the point of view of the hardness distribution and hardening depth and width.
The transient thermo-mechanical behavior of a simply-supported beam made of a functionally graded material (FGM) under the effect of a moving heat source is investigated. The FGM consists of a ceramic part (on the top), which is the hot side of the beam as the heat source motion takes place along this side, and a metal part (in the bottom), which is considered the cold side. Grading is in the transverse direction, with the properties being temperature-dependent. The main steps of the thermo-elastic modeling included deriving the partial differential equations for the temperatures and deflections in time and space, transforming them into ordinary differential equations using Laplace transformation, and finally using the inverse Laplace transformation to find the solutions. The effects of different parameters on the thermo-mechanical behavior of the beam are investigated, such as the convection coefficient and the heat source intensity and speed. The results show that temperatures, and hence the deflections and stresses increase with less heat convection from the beam surface, higher heat source intensity and low speeds.
Shape memory alloy (SMA) has demonstrated its potentials for various smart structure applications. SMA wires undergo a reversible phase transformation from martensite to austenite as temperature increases. This transformation leads to shape recovery and associated recovery strains. If SMA actuators are embedded off the neutral surface and are oriented in arbitrary angles with respect to a beam axis, then the beam bends and twists due to the coupling effects of recovery strains activated. In this study, the bending and twisting of a SMA/Composite beam were controlled by both electric resistive heating and passive elastic tailoring. 3-dimensional finite element formulations were derived and validated to analyze the responses of the SMA/Composite beam. Numerical results show that the shape of the SMA/Composite beam can be controlled by judicious choices of control temperatures, SMA angles, and elastic tailoring.
This investigation is aimed to develop a model of experimental-computation determination of a support moment of a cantilever beam loaded with concentrated force at its end including the optimal choice of coordinates of deflection data points and parameters of transformation of deflection data in case of insufficient accuracy of the assignment of initial parameters (support settlement, angle of rotation of the bearing section) and cantilever beam length. The influence of distribution and characteristics of sensors on the cantilever beam on the accuracy of determining the support moment which improves in the course of transition from the uniform distribution of sensors to optimal non-uniform distribution is shown. On the basis of the theory of inverse problems the method of transformation reduction at numerical differentiation of deflection functions has been studied. For engineering evaluation formulae of uncertainty estimate to determine a support moment of a cantilever beam at predetermined uncertainty of measurements using sensors have been obtained.
The vibration analysis of a rotating cantilever beam with tip mass was studied by using DTM(differential transformation method). DTM is one of the numerical methods, for finding series solutions by transforming differential equations to algebraic ones similar with Laplace transform. The advantages of the DTM are that it is easy to understand and is effective in finding numerical solutions. Applying DTM, the natural frequencies of a rotating cantilever beam were obtained taking into consideration the effects of tip mass. Also, convergence study of DTM was performed to decide the number of terms used in eigenvalue problems. Numerical results obtained by DTM show good agreement with those by other methods. As a result, it is expected that DTM can be a useful method in vibration analysis such as that of a rotating cantilever beam with tip mass.
The anomalous propagation characteristics of a single Airy beam in nonlocal nonlinear medium are investigated by utilizing the split-step Fourier-transform method. We show that besides the normal straight propagation trajectory, the breathing solitons formed by the interaction between Airy beam and nonlocal nonlinear medium can propagate along the sinusoidal trajectory, and the anomalous trajectory can be modulated arbitrarily by altering the initial amplitude and the nonlocal nonlinear coefficient. In addition, the initial amplitude and the nonlocal nonlinear coefficient can have inverse impacts on the formation and transformation of the equilibrium state of spatial solitons, when the two parameters are larger than certain values. Therefore, the reversible transformation of the evolution dynamics of two soliton states can be realized by adjusting those two parameters properly. Finally, it is shown that the propagation properties of the solitons formed by the interaction between Airy beam and nonlocal nonlinear medium can be controlled arbitrarily, by adjusting the distribution factor and nonlocal coefficient.
