  • The rigid steel connections were suffered severe damage because of low rotational capacity during earthquakes. Hence, many investigations have been conducted on the connections of steel structures. As a solution, steel slit dampers were employed at the connections to prevent brittle failure of connections and damage of main structural members. Slit damper is a plate or a standard section with a number of slits in the web. The objective of this paper is to improve the seismic performance of steel slit dampers in the beam-to-column connection using finite element modeling. With reviewing the previous investigations, it is observed that slit dampers were commonly fractured in the end parts of the struts. This may be due to the low participation of struts middle parts in the energy dissipation. Thus, in the present study slit damper with elliptic slits is proposed in such a way that end parts of struts have more energy absorption area than struts middle parts. A parametric study is conducted to investigate the effects of geometric parameters of elliptic slit damper such as strut width, strut height and plate thickness on the seismic performance of the beam-to-column connection. The stress distribution is improved along the struts in the proposed slit damper with elliptic slits and the stress concentration is decreased in the end parts of struts. The average contributions of elliptic slit dampers, beam and other sections to the energy dissipation are about 97.19%, 2.12% and 0.69%, respectively.

  • The connection with combined cross diaphragm is developed for the connection of square CFT column and steel beam and proposed to be used for the frame with asymmetric span length. The structural characteristics of this connection lie in the penetration of the beam flange in the direction of major axis through the column for the smooth flow of stress. The purpose of this study is to analyze the dynamic behavior and stress flow of suggested connection and to evaluate the resistance to shock of connection. Four T-type CFT column-to-beam specimens; two with combined cross diaphragm and the others with interior and through diaphragms, the existing connection types, were made for cyclic load test guided by the load program of ANSI/AISC SSPEC 2002. The results show that the proposed connection is more efficient than existing ones in terms of strength, stress flow and energy absorption and satisfies the seismic performance required in the region of weak/moderate earthquakes.

  • This paper addresses the dynamic loading characteristics of the shock tube onto sandwich steel beams as an efficient and accurate alternative to time consuming and complicated fluid structure interaction using finite element modeling. The corrugated sandwich steel beam consists of top and bottom flat substrates of steel 1018 and corrugated cores of steel 1008. The corrugated core layers are arranged with non-uniform thicknesses thus making sandwich beam graded. This sandwich beam is analogous to a steel beam with web and flanges. Substrates correspond to flanges and cores to web. The stress-strain relations of steel 1018 at high strain rates are measured using the split-Hopkinson pressure. Both carbon steels are assumed to follow bilinear strain hardening and strain rate-dependence. The present finite element modeling procedure with an improved dynamic impulse loading assumption is validated with a set of shock tube experiments, and it provides excellent correlation based on Russell error estimation with the test results. Four corrugated graded steel core arrangements are taken into account for core design parameters in order to maximize mitigation of blast load effects onto the structure. In addition, numerical study of four corrugated steel core placed in a reverse order is done using the validated finite element model. The dynamic behavior of the reversed steel core arrangement is compared with the normal core arrangement for deflections, contact force between support and specimen and plastic energy absorption.

  • Improving the mechanical properties of concrete in the construction industry in order to increase resistance to dynamic and static loads is one of the essential topics for researchers. In this work, vibration analysis of elastic nanocomposite beams reinforced by nanoparticles based on mathematical model is presented. For modelling of the strucuture, sinusoidal shear deformation beam theory (SSDBT) is utilized. Mori-anak model model is utilized for obtaining the effective properties of the strucuture including agglomeration influences. Utilizing the energy method and Hamilton's principal, the motion equations are calculated. The frequency of the elastic nanocomposite beam is obtanied by analytical method. The aim of this work is investigating the effects of nanoparticles volume percent and agglomeration, length and thickness of the beam on the frequency of the structure. The results show that the with enhancing the nanoparticles volume percent, the frequency is increased. In addition, the water absorption of the concrete is presented in this article.

  • Experimental results are presented from tests conducted on reinforced concrete beam-column joints with lap splices under reversed cyclic loading simulating earthquake action. Response curves are compared for twenty-four specimens designed according to Eurocode 2. The main parameters of the investigation are, the geometry of the reinforcing bar extension, the applied axial load (normalized), the available cover over lap splice region extended as length required from Eurocode 2, as well as the shape and the volumetric percentage of the stirrups confining the lap splice zone. The results are evaluated with regards to the load intensity, the energy absorption capacity and the characteristics of the load deflection curve.

  • In order to study the impact of atmosphere during electron beam irradiation (EBI) of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor fibers, the latter were stabilized by EBI in both air and oxygen atmospheres. Gel-fraction determination indicated that EBI-stabilization under an oxygen atmosphere leads to an enhanced cyclization in the PAN fibers. In the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis, the PAN fibers stabilized by EBI under an oxygen atmosphere exhibited a greater decrease in the peak intensity at 2244 cm−1 (C≡N vibration) and a greater increase in the peak intensity at 1628 cm−1 (C=N absorption) than the corresponding PAN fibers stabilized under an air atmosphere. From the X-ray diffraction analysis it was found that oxygen uptake in PAN fibers leads to an increase in the amorphous region, produced by cyclization.

  • The quality of radiation for a high energy x-ray beam can be specified by its attenuation curve in a selected material. The inverse Laplace transform of the attenuation curve can be used as an approximate indication of the energy spectrum of the beam. We have made a comparative investigation of the estimated spectrum obtained by the Laplace transform analysis of the transmitted exposure data measured in an absorption study of a 6MV x-ray beam. Two of existing transform pair models have been investicated and discussed.

  • A bumper comprises a bumper cover, a bumper beam for distributing the load from the impacts applied to the bumper cover and reinforcing the bumper, an absorber member interposed between the bumper cover and tile bumper beam, and a pair of bumper stays which secure the bumper beam to the vehicle body. A conventional bumper stay structure is assembled into several stamped parts, so several processes are needed and the structure is complicated. In this study the bumper stay is applied to the tubular hydroforming which is known to have several advantages such as the reduction of the number of the process and the part weight. The thickness distribution of the tube is mainly considered to evaluate the hydro-formability and the shape of the tube is determined.

  • Laser beam can be either absorbed or scattered in porous ceramic material and its optical characteristics need to be understood. Electro-magnetic multiphysics software was used to simulate and understand the actual scattering phenomena in porous materials. 785nm femtosecond laser was irradiated on the surface of ceramic material and strong scattering occurred in drilling process. The computer results showed the scattering and absorption phenomena of Aluminum oxide were a mixture of dielectric and metallic material. The computer simulation showed the laser beam was almost extinct at the aspect rate of 5 approximately.

  • The low velocity impact characteristics of composite laminate curved beams are investigated to increase damage tolerance and reduce the deflection. Drop weight impact tests of the composite curved beam were performed with respect to pre-load, then the damage after impact was measured by macrography. Also, finite element analyses were performed using ABAQUS to investigate the stress state of composite curved beam with respect to pre-load and impact. From the investigation, it was found that pre-load of the composite curved beams had much influence on impact damage of the curved beam, which showed good agreement with the experiment results.
