Study of a High Energy Density Battery Using a 3D Sulfur Electrode (3D S 전극을 활용한 고에너지밀도 전지 연구)

  • The possibility of conversion to the RC-MAT propulsion system (gasoline engine → electric motor) was studied. However, as commercial battery capacities are low. it is not possible to change the propulsion system. Nevertheless, development of nex-generation batteries is necessary for high capacity and high energy density. Although Li/S batteries are theoretically suitable as new generation batteries, these batteries are not composed of only Li and S. Hence, ensuring high energy density can be difficult. Moreover, electrolytes are important components in the study of energy density; hence, the battery by Li2S8 Molarity was sorted. There are no studied on its various electrode components. In this study, a Li/S battery was fabricated using an assorted 3D sulfur electrode of high energy density and its electrochemical properties were studied. The Li/S battery has a high energy density of 468 Wh/kg at 1.28 M Li2S8 (A805-1.28). Its capacity rapidly decreased after 1 cycle with more than 1 M Li2S8.

  • These days, sales of battery electric vehicles have been rapidly increasing due to the strict CO2 regulations. However, since it take too long to measure the energy economy of electric vehicles, it has been required to improve the procedure of energy economy measurement. In order to improve this problem, the present study analyzed the battery charge/discharge pattern according to the changes in battery SOC (state of charge). In general, the energy economy test is started with a battery SOC charged to 100 %. However, it was identified that when the battery is fully charged, it can actually be charged over the 100 % (e.g., 100.5 %). This can induce errors in the energy economy measurement. Therefore, the present study recommend to start the test at SOC 99.9 %. The regenerative braking was partly restricted for the SOC over 90 %. This made it difficult to estimate the overall energy economy of the electric vehicle. However, it was identified that there was no change in the battery charge/discharge characteristics under the SOC 90 %. Therefore, the energy economy test can be shortened by predicting the overall energy economy through a short mileage test.

  • This paper aims at investigation some operating characteristics and energy usage efficiency of a induction motor and a BLDC motor considering electric propulsion system in a small ship based on battery source. At first, performance curves of discharge voltage from the battery and current from each motor according to the load variations were analyzed. Next, variations of motor torque and rotational speed versus load change at each motor were analyzed. Finally, efficiency of energy usage of the battery and available navigation distance were compared each other. Through some comparisons and analyses, it was cleared that the BLDC motor is more suitable for the motor of the electric propulsion system in small ships based on battery source. It is expected that the results can be used as useful data for design of the electric propulsion system with batteries.

  • Increased fossil fuel consumption causes global warming, environmental pollution, and abnormal climate change. Wind-generated power installation is proposed to solve this problem. Recently, the wind power plant construction case encourages the installation of the energy storage system (ESS) to improve the intermittency of wind power. The maximized ESS operation profits connected to wind power are not generated in the simplest operation pattern of charging at night and discharging at day. The battery charging efficiency improvement should be considered to get more profits. Thus, there is a possibility of increasing ESS operation profits by analyzing the battery AC and DC charging/discharging efficiency and the yearly average sealed maintenance free (SMP) in hours. In this paper, the battery impedance characteristic, AC and DC charging/discharging efficiency, and the yearly average SMP are analyzed. The operation scenario to improve the ESS battery charging efficiency connected to wind power is proposed and verified via simulation.

  • This paper proposed dc-dc converter with continuous output current for battery charger. If we charge energy storage device by conventional boost converter, current flows into the discontinuous and as a result reduces the life-time of battery. The output voltage of dc-dc converter should be higher than voltage of across the battery, specially if charging by PV there is a fluctuation of voltage due change of insolation and temperature, therefore will boost and regulate this voltage. The proposal converter includes forward converter and the output voltage of the proposal converter looks like an input voltage and forward output voltage's add. This topology was tested on simulation and experimentation. Simulation and experimentation results indicated that the proposal topology is useful for battery charging because the output current of the converter flows continuously and perfectly.

Parameter Identification of 3R-C Equivalent Circuit Model Based on Full Life Cycle Database

  • The energy density, power density and ohm resistance of battery change significantly as results of battery aging, which lead to decrease in the accuracy of the equivalent model. A parameter identification method of the equivale6nt circuit model with 3 R-C branches based on the test database of battery life cycle is proposed in this paper. This database is built on the basis of experiments such as updating of available capacity, charging and discharging tests at different rates and relaxation characteristics tests. It can realize regular update and calibration of key parameters like SOH, so as to ensure the reliability of parameters identified. Taking SOH, SOC and T as independent variables, lookup table method is adopted to set initial value for the parameter matrix. Meanwhile, in order to ensure the validity of the model, the least square method based on variable forgetting factor is adopted for optimizing to complete the identification of equivalent model parameters. By comparing the simulation data with measured data for charging and discharging experiments of Li-ion battery, the effectiveness of the full life cycle database and the model are verified.

Design of an Integrated Current-Voltage Charging Compensator for the LLC Resonant Converter-Based Li-ion Battery Charger (LLC 공진형 컨버터 기반 리튬이온 배터리 충전기의 통합 전류-전압 보상기 설계방법 연구)

  • The conventional battery charger requires two separate voltage and current compensators to achieve constant current and constant-current-charging profile. This compensator configuration leads to an inevitable transient response during the mode change between the constant current and the constant voltage operation. Futhermore, a tedious and complicated design process is required to consider a widely changing battery voltage and the nonlinear electrical properties of Li-ion battery. This study proposes a single integrated voltage-current compensator of the LLC resonant converter for Li-ion battery charger applications to overcome the aforementioned drawbacks. The proposed compensator is designed to provide a smooth and reliable performance during the entire charging process while providing the reduced design efforts and seamless mode transient response. Several experimental results based on a 300 W prototype converter and its theoretical analysis are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed compensator.

  • Batteries are widely used for energy storage, such as ESS(Energy Storage System), electric vehicles, electric aircraft, and electric powered ships. Among them, a submarine uses a high power battery for an energy storage. When the battery of a submarine is discharged, a diesel generator generates AC power, and then AC/DC power converter change AC power to DC power for charging the battery. Therefore, in order to lower the current capacity of the diesel generator, it is necessary to use an AC/DC converter with a high input power factor. And, a power converter with a large power capacity must have high stability because it can lead to a major accident when a failure occurs. However, the control algorithm using the traditional PI controller is difficult to satisfy stability and dynamic characteristics. In this paper, we design the high power AC/DC converter with high input power factor for battery charging systems. And, we propose a stable control algorithm. The validity of the proposed method is verified through simulation and experiments.

  • The voltage profile during discharge of the zinc air battery has very flat pattern until reach to end of discharge voltage. But, when zinc air battery is discharged by high current, the discharge voltage and energy becomes low. Therefore, we focused on effects of catalyst size to solve this problems by increasing active sites of oxygen reduction reaction. The size of catalyst was reduced from 27 to l${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and we examined average discharge voltage, capacity, energy, resistance and characteristics during GSM pulse discharge of zinc air battery with change of current density. And we also measured porosity of the cathode according to the ASTM. So we have got improvement of average discharge voltage and energy when catalyst was minimized and we have got optimum size of catalyst at 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.

  • Increasing demand of energy, the depletion of fossil fuel reserves, energy security and the climate change have forced us to look upon alternate energy resources. For today's electric vehicles that run on lithium-ion batteries, one of the biggest downsides is the limited range between recharging. Over the past several years, researchers have been working on lithium-air battery. These batteries could significantly increase the range of electric vehicles due to their high energy density, which could theoretically be equal to the energy density of gasoline. Li-air batteries are potentially viable ultra-high energy density chemical power sources, which could potentially offer specific energies up to 3000 $Whkg^{-1}$ being rechargeable. This paper provides a review on Lithium air battery as alternate energy resource for the future.
