  • Recently, considerable researches have been focused to find out inexpensive sorbents. for removal of heavy metals in aquatic environments. In particular, various natural materials including geologic media have been attractive. In order to evaluate the applicability of the scoria taken from the Jeju island, Korea, to remove Zn(II) from aqueous solutions, the kinetic sorption experiments were performed in this study. The batch-type kinetic sorption tests were carried out under different conditions, such as different initial Zn(II) concentration, particle size of the scoria, and sorbate/sorbent ratio. The results indicated that the removal of Zn(II) by scoria increased with decreases in initial Zn(II) concentration, particle size of the scoria, and sorbate/sorbent ratio. However, the sorption capacity of the scoria decreased with increasing amount of the scoria. The sorption behavior of Zn(II) onto scoria seemed to be mainly controlled by cation exchange.

  • The results of process development for the blending of waste salt from the electrorefining of spent fuel with zeolite-A are presented. This blending is a key step in the ceramic waste process being used for treatment of EBR-II spent fuel and is accomplished using a high-temperature v-blender. A labscale system was used with non-radioactive surrogate salts to determine optimal particle size distributions and time at temperature. An engineering-scale system was then installed in the Hot Fuel Examination Facility hot cell and used to demonstrate blending of actual electrorefiner salt with zeolite. In those tests, it was shown that the results are still favorable with actinide-loaded salt and that batch size of this v-blender could be increased to a level consistent with efficient production operations for EBR-II spent fuel treatment. One technical challenge that remains for this technology is to mitigate the problem of material retention in the v-blender due to formation of caked patches of salt/zeolite on the inner v-blender walls.

  • Sequential passes through $Sephadex^{TM}$ columns were used to select phages that displays ligands for dextran ($\alpha$-1,6 linked linear chains) from a phage antibody library. Those phages that bound to the $Sephadex^{TM}$ in each iteration were replicated in E. coli. A phage preparation isolated on the third round selection produced 5.4 nephelos turbidity units (NTU) in a dextran specific immunonephelometric assay, a 2.2 fold higher value than the phage preparation from the first round selection. This phage gave $72\;{\pm}\;10$ normalized intensity (N.I.) in a dip-stick assay against high molecular size dextran (T2000, $2\;{\times}\;10^6) and significantly lower color ($30\;{\pm}\;6$ N.I.) against low molecular size dextran (T10, $10^4$). The presence of an Fab insert in each of these phages was confirmed using a $\beta-galactosidase linked assay and polymerase chain reaction.

  • Conventionally, many pig producers have utilized a continual sow managements system that the matings, farrowings and weanings are done weekly basis. But this transitional method is not able to cut the cycle of diseases and fully apply all-in/all-out system because of the continuous flow of sows and pigs. Conventional weekly management system is currently limiting in small farm to work efficiently both for workers and pigs. Therefore, pig producers have found novel management methods for applying all-in/all-out system, improving pig health, leading to better growth, lowering mortality and reducing medication costs nowadays. Moreover, all-in/all-out pig management system has known as a strategy for improving productivity in swine farm. The batch system is one of the best management methods to adopt all-in/all-out pig management system that prevent spreading diseases in pig and remove cycle of diseases. Batch farrowing system is a concept for providing a group of sows that delivery within a specific farrowing interval and inducing a large enough scale of piglets to fill the weaner facilities. There are different types of batch farrowing system with batch size and interval of farrowing when several factors at the swine farm are considered such as total number of sows, available facilities in the farm, and the efficiency of workforce. Sow managements such as farrowing, weaning and breeding, every 3 weeks rather than weekly, 2 or 5-week interval have advantages for workers and reproductive cycle of sows as well as pig flow. Because there are several pros and cons both in weekly and batch management system, various factors should be considered to apply the most suitable management system in each individual farm. To improve poor swine productivity in Korea compared to ED, batch system for sows will be an alternative choice which is able to prevent high incidence of diseases in swine farm such as PMWS, PRRS, PRDC and PED because all-in/all-out pig management can be also applied automatically by using this management system.

  • We prepared monodispersed calcium alginate microspheres by controlling various conditions of emulsification procedure using a lab-scale batch type membrane emulsification system equipped with SPG (Shirasu porous glass) tubular membranes. We determined the effects of process parameters of membrane emulsification (ratio of dispersed phase to continuous phase, alginate concentration, emulsifier concentration, type and concentration of stabilizer, transmembrane pressure, concentration of crosslinking agent, stirring speed and membrane pore size) on the mean size and size distribution of alginate microspheres. The increase of the ratio of dispersed phase to continuous phase, transmembrane pressure and alginate concentration led to the increase in the mean size of alginate microspheres. On the contrary, the increase in emulsifier concentration, stirring speed of the continuous phase and concentration of the crosslinking agent caused the reduction of the mean size of microspheres. Through controlling these parameters, monodisperse alginate microspheres with about $6{\mu}{\textrm{m}}$ of the mean size and 1.1 of the size distribution value were finally prepared in case of the using SPC membrane with the pore size of $2.9{\mu}{\textrm{m}}$.

  • The reproduction characteristics of hagfish Eptatretus burgeri were examined using individuals caught in the South Sea of Korea. The spawning season and size at minimum sexual maturity of this species were characterized based on a gonad-somatic index (GSI) and monthly variation egg size (long axis). From monthly variation of GSI, the spawning season was estimated to be from August to September. Developing eggs larger than 10 mm were found in March, and the largest egg size was found in July. The first spawning length was 34.2 cm TL. Batch fecundity ranged from 13 to 117 eggs for hagfish sized from 34.2 cm TL to 77.0 cm TL, respectively, and increased linearly with total length.

  • Design approach of upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket(UASB) process based on the biological kinetic parameters are known to be very difficult since the characteristics of the granular slut비e depends on the type of wastewater and size distribution of the granular sludge also depends on the upflow velocity in the UASB reactors. Furthermore, industrial wastewater containing toxic substances has been treated by UASB process without the clear knowledge of toxic effects on the granular slut형e. Hence, the present research was aimed on the intensive evaluation of biological kinetic parameters of the granular sludge in UASB reactor with and without toxic substance of 2, 4-dichlorophenol in order to present the basic design measures for UASB process design. The results could be summarized as follows. The biological kinetic parameters(k and Ks) considerably varied with the granular size of the sludge. Generally, 연e k and ks values of the granular sludge increased with the particle size of the granule. The biological kinetic parameters(k and Ks) of the granular sludge obtained from batch test were not applicable to design purpose of UASB process due to substrate diffusional limitation into the granular sludge in the completely mixed UASB reactors. The toxic effects on k and Ks greatly varied with the granular sixte. And as the toxicant concentration increased, the k value decreased while the Ks value increased. Inhibition constant(hi) for k with the toxicant of 2, 4-dichlorophenol varied from 0.5 to 2.3 depending on the granular sizes while the inhibition constant(Ki) for Ks varied from 20.7 to 80.1, showing the mixed inhibition.

  • In the conventional metallothermic reduction (MR) process for obtaining tantalum powder in batch-type operation. it is difficult to control morphology and location of deposits. On the other hand, a electronically mediated reaction (EMR) process is capable to overcome these difficulties and has a merit of continuous process, but it has the defect that the reduction yield is poor. MR-EMR combination process is a method that is able to overcome demerits of MR and EMR process. In this study, a MR-EMR combination process has been applied to the production of tantalum powder by sodium reduction of $K_2$TaF$_{7}$. The total charge passed through external circuit and average particle size (FSSS) were increased with increasing reduction temperature. The proportion of fine particle (-325 mesh) was decreased with increasing reduction temperature. The yield was improved from 65% to 74% with increasing reduction temperature. Considering the charge, impurities, morphology, particle size and yield, an reduction temperature of 1,123 K was found to be optimum temperature for MR-EMR combination process.

  • Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB-co-4HB)] microspheres were prepared using solvent evaporation technique. P(3HB-co-4HB) with 3.9 mol% 4HB was synthesized by fed-batch culture of Ralstonia eutropha. The effects of concentration and type of surfactant (Tween 80, sodium dodecylsulfate, and polyvinyl alcohol), addition of dispersion stabilizer (Acacia), concentration of polymer and model drug (bovine serum albumin) on particle size of the microspheres and their in vitro drug release characteristics were investigated. The average particle size of the microspheres decreased with the addition of dispersion stabilizer and increased with the concentration of surfactant, drug and polymer. Amount of drug release increased with decreasing particle size of the microspheres.

  • A batch mixture was prepared as 16mol% CaO-84mol% $ZrO_2$ of regeant-grade powder. The monoclinic Zirconia powder had an average particle size of $9.24 \mu\textrm{m}$ and calcium carbonate powder had a reported purity of 99.7 weight percent and mean particle size of TEX>$24, 37<\mu\textrm{m}$. The specimens were fired at 1400, 1500, 1650 and $1750^{\circ}C$ for 0. 3, 5 and 7 hours respectively. After fired the specimens were investigated using Scaning electron microscopy. Density Porosity Compressive strength Modulus of rupture and Thermal expansion were measured X-ray diffration analysis was also carried out. The results are as follows ; 1) As the firing temperature or soaking time was increased firing linear shrinkage apparent density compressive strength and modulus of rupture increased but apparent porosity decreased, 2) Cubic and monoclinic Zirconia was found at $1400^{\circ}C$ and cubic Ziconia found above $1500^{\circ}C$ 3) The specimens fired at 140$0^{\circ}C$ without soaking display thermal expansion curves by monoclinic〓tetragonal transformation and no tranformation was found at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 5hrs and above $1500^{\circ}C$. 4) The lattice parameter had constant value of 5.1345 $\AA$ through all the ranges of firing temperature 5) The higher the firing temperature was or the longer the soaking time was the larger the grain size was.
