  • In this paper, experimental results were presented on the moment resistance of a concealed timber post base joint aimed at replacing in a modern design introduced lately the wood to wood joints used in the traditional Korean timber house - Hanok. Preliminary results showed that the original configuration of the joint offers a limited moment resistance and a low ductility and energy dissipation. In an attempt to mitigate those limitations without undergoing major changes in the connector, three new configurations were proposed and investigated. Motivated by the wish to prevent the early failure in welds, a first approach consists in directly bolting the connector's upper plate to lower the stress on the weak welds. Alternatively, another approach focused on increasing the strength of these welds by extending their length to the full width of the metal wings. Finally, a third configuration investigated the effect of those two approaches combined. In conclusion, reinforcing the welds found out to be the best option among the presented ones. As a result, this connector considered to show proper ability for use in earthquake-resistant structures with suited lateral-resistant structural elements.

  • Corrosion fatigue cracking of the austenitic stainless steel(bese metal & heat affected zone by TIG weld) was studied experimentally under the environments of various specific resistance and air. The characteristics of corrosion fatigue crack growth rate and the environmental constants of paris' rule were investigated for SUS 304 weldments in the various specific resistance. The influences of stress intensity factor range and corrosion on the crack growth rate were compared. The characteristics of corrosion fatigue cracking for the weldments were inspected from mechanical, electrochemical and microstructural point of view. Main results obtained are as follows: 1) As the specific resistance decreases, the environmental constant C of paris'rule increases(hence the corrosion fatigue crack growth rate is rapid), but the environmental constant m decreases, so the effect of corrosion to the crack growth rate is more susceptible than thet of stress intensity factor range. 2) As the stress intensity factor range decreases, the corrosion fatigue crack growth rate of heat affected zone is more susceptible than that of the base metal. 3) The corrosion fatigue crack growth rate of the heat affected zone is more rapid than that of the base metal, because of the phenomenon of softening and the less noble potential coused by wedlding heat cycle. 4) The corrosion fatigue cracking of SUS 304 weldment appears transgranular fracture.

  • The object of this paper is to study on the thermal performance of a micro channel water block for computer CPU cooling. The effects of liquid flow rate, micro channel width and height on the thermal performances of water block are investigated experimentally. The water block was fabricated Al and machined with a micro milling. The water block consisted of rectangular micro channels 0.5 to 0.9 mm width and 1.5 to 4.5 mm height. The experiments were conducted using deionized water, over a liquid flow rate ranging from 0.2 to 2.0 kg/min. The base temperature and thermal resistance decrease with increasing of liquid flow rate. The increase of a channel height is more effective on the thermal resistance than the decrease of a channel width. At the flow rate of 0.7 kg/min, input power of 100 W, the base temperature and thermal resistance of sample 6 is $33^{\circ}C$ and $0.13\;^{\circ}C/W$ respectively.

  • Three different weather-resistant coatings were fabricated with the various weight ratios of a mill-base silicone/acrylic resin to let-down silicone /acrylic resin at 2:8, 3:7, and 4:6 respectively. The prepared coatings were tested to investigate the effect of composition of weather-resistant coatings on the physical properties. The thermal stability, salt spray exposure, and weather-resistance were improved with the increased silicone content. It was concluded that the optimum retio of mill-base silicone/acrylic resin to let-down silicone/acrylic resin would be 2:8 and the coating with 30 wt% of silicone content would have high weather-resistance.

  • This study has evaluated the liquation cracking behavior in the heat affected zone of several Ni base superalloys (Incoloy 825, Inconel 718 and Inconel 600). 304 and 310S austenitic stainless steels were also included for comparison. In addition, the mechanism of liquation cracking in the HAZ was postulated based on the extensive microstructural examinations with SEM, EDAX and TEM. The liquation cracking resistance of Ni base alloys was found to be far inferior to that of austenitic stainless steels. The liquation cracking of Incoloy 825 and Inconel 718 was believed to be closely related with the Laves-austenite(Ti rich in 825 and Nb rich in 718) and MC-austenitic eutectic phases formed along the grain boundaries by constitutional liquation and incipient melting under rapid welding thermal contraction. Further, liquation cracking resistance of the HAZ was dependent not only upon the type and amount of low melting phases but also on the grain size.

  • Recently, with rapid development in marine and shipbuilding industries such as marine structures, ships and chemical plants for ship, there occurs much interest in the study on corrosion characteristics played an important role in mechanical design. This paper was studies on the corrosion characteristics of chromium plating in the marine environment. Under the various specific resistance, the electrochemical polarization test of chromium plating was carried out. And thus corrosion potential, polarization resistance, corrosion current density, control efficiency of corrosion and polarization control behavior of chromium plating are investigated. The main results are as the followed : 1. The polarization resistance of Cr plating and Ni become higher than that of base metal, also and these material become low with decrease of the specific resistance. 2. As the specific resistance decreases, the corrosion current density of Cr and Ni plating is lower than that of base metal. 3. The corrosion reaction of Cr plating, Ni plating and base metal vs. specific resistance is cathodic control.

  • Genetic variability was monitored by random amplified polymorphic DNA-polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) in dicofol-susceptible (S), dicofol-resistant (R) and its reverse-selected (RS) strains of two-spotted spider mite, of Tetranychus urticae. Before the reverse-selection, RS strain, selected reversely from R strain, was 23-fold resistance ratio at {TEX}$LC_{50}${/TEX} to S strain. The resistance was started to in incline slowly to the resistance level of S strain after one year, and the resistance ratio was 4-fold in the 7 years after then. PCR-amplification of T. urticae DNA showed polymorphism in the amplifications with 12 primers in 100 kinds of arbitrary DNA sequences. RAPD amplification with primer OPR-12 (5`-ACAGGTGCGT-3`) showed amplified bands at 1,000 base pair in the S-and RS-strain, and at 350 base pair in R-strain. The results of polymorphism are genetic variabilities derived from development and selection of resistance in each strain. The peculiarly amplified fragments were guessed to participate in dicofol resistance. From the analysis of genetic similarity, it is inferred the gene composition of S-and RS-strain is much closer than that of R-strain.

  • A pin fin is optimized based on the increasing rate of heat loss by using a two-dimensional analytic method. The optimum heat loss, corresponding optimum thermal resistance and fin length are presented as a function of the fin base thickness, convection characteristic numbers ratio, fin outer radius and ambient convection characteristic number. One of the results shows that both the optimum heat loss and fin length decrease linearly whereas the optimum thermal resistance increases very slightly with increase of the fin base thickness.

  • The microstructures and properties of TiC dispersed nickel-base alloy were studied in this work. The alloy prepared by powder metallurgical processing was solution treated, 1st-aged at $880^{\circ}C$ for 16 hours, and then 2nd-aged at $760^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. Microstucture of sintered specimen showed that TiC particles are uniformly dispersed in Ni base alloy. In the specimen aged at $880^{\circ}C$ for 8 hours, the fine $\gammaNi_3$(Al,Ti) precipitates with round shape are observed and the very fine $\gammaNi_3$(Al,Ti) particles with round shape are precipitated in the specimen aged at $760^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. The presence of ${\gamma}$precipitates in TiC/Ni base alloy increased the hardness and wear resistance of the specimen. The hardness and wear resistance of the Ni-base with TiC are higher than those of conventional Ni-base superalloy X-750 because of dispersion strengthening of TiC particles. The hardness, transverse rupture strength and resistance of the specimen 2nd-aged at $760^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours are higher than those of 1st-aged specimen due to ultrafine $\gammaNi_3$(Al,Ti) precipitates.
